Above the Buzz rounds up the best pop songs praising mom. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber and his mother Patricia Mallette Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images Mother’s Day is just around the bend — Sunday, to be exact. If you’re reading this and that’s news to you, you might want to order your mama some flowers and read on for some awesome mixtape song selections courtesy of Above the Buzz . Pop music has had a longstanding tradition of cranking out tunes that pay homage to the most important woman in everyone’s life: mommy dearest. How could you not look to mom for musical inspiration? She loves you unconditionally, pushes you to be your best, is an awesome shopping buddy and, at one point, let you make that terrible decision of rocking blond highlights back in high school when you really had no business being blonde. Basically, she’s your friend until the end. So, hit record on your boom box and collect these tunes to let mom know how much you love and appreciate her. (And, yes, I am writing this column from a random Mother’s Day in the ’90s when people still recorded mixtapes off boom boxes.) In 1999, the Backstreet Boys released a sappy ballad titled “The Perfect Fan.” With touches of gospel on the track, the sentiment thanking their moms for always being supportive reaches it crescendo when the fivesome declare, “I wanna thank you for what you’ve done/ In hopes I can give back to you/ And be the perfect son.” Writing a song about your mom, boys, is certainly a good start. Years before BSB dropped their mommy ode, Boyz II Men released “A Song for Mama” in 1997. In the deeply emotional ballad produced and written by Babyface, the guys praise their mamas for showing them the right thing to do. “You’re always there for me/ Have always been around for me, even when I was bad/ You showed me right from my wrong/ Yes, you did,” they sing. And, we swooned. That same year, the Spice Girls released “Mama.” Lyrically, it is a bit different from the tracks the boys released. The song is about the girls’ growing relationships with their moms, who went from their biggest enemy when they were teens to being their best friends as adults. The ladies sing, “Back then, I didn’t know why/ Why you were misunderstood/ So now I see through your eyes/ All that you did was love.” An equally touching ode from Christina Aguilera , “Oh Mother,” delves into a more serious topics than those other tracks. Released in 2006, the song reflects on her mother’s abusive relationship with her father. The song is incredibly personal, relaying some details about watching her mother get abused. But, in the end, she wants her mom to know this: “So mother, I thank you/ For all that you’ve done and still do/ You got me, I got you/ Together, we always pull through.” On the other side of the emotional mom rollercoaster is Taylor Swift ‘s “The Best Day,” which she dropped in 2008. The track is a mid-tempo jam about all the awesome things her mom does to make her feel better when she’s low and all the things her mom taught her. “I know you were on my side even when I was wrong/ And I love you for giving me your eyes/ For staying back and watching me shine/ And I didn’t know if you knew, so I’m takin’ this chance to say/ That I had the best day with you today,” she sings. You said it for all of us, girl! With a new Mother’s Day upon us, Justin Bieber is getting in on the action with his new track “Turn to You.” Given the tradition he’s following in, it’s a nice sentiment from a boy who truly loves his mom. And, there’s nothing more adorable than a pop star who knows where it’s at. Because we know where it’s at, we have this final message: Happy Mother’s Day, mom! All these songs say it all and so much more. You rock! Now, go tell your mom how you feel about her — she deserves it. What’s your favorite track showing love for mom? Share your pick below!
Irish boy band easily defeated Jonas Brothers in the championship matchup. By Christina Garibaldi Westlife Photo: Getty Images The fans have spoken. After two weeks of intense matchups and more than 12 million votes, Westlife have come out on top in MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands . The Irish boy band easily defeated the in the final round, with more than 70 percent of the final vote. It was a hard-fought finale with both bands’ fanbases tirelessly voting in the hopes of giving their band the championship, but in the end, the international firepower of Westlife was too much for JoBros fans to handle. Westlife may not have been favored to win this competition, but from day one they proved they were fighters and were out to make a statement. They got everyone’s attention early on when, amidst accusations of cheating, they fairly beat out fan favorites the Backstreet Boys in the first round. They had no trouble at all beating out their next two opponents, O-Town and the Beatles, and managed to get past newcomers the Wanted in the Final Four to ultimately take on the Jonas Brothers in the championship. This win in the Battle of the Boy Bands seems to come at a perfect time for the group because their 14-year career is about to come to an end. Westlife have decided to go their separate ways after the conclusion of their Greatest Hits Tour, which kicks off later this week and wraps up at the end of June in front of a hometown crowd in Dublin, Ireland. Congratulations to Westlife and to all their extremely loyal fans: You have certainly proved your devotion and didn’t let up no matter how tough the competition was. Thanks to all the bands that participated. From newcomers One Direction, Mindless Behavior and Big Time Rush to veteran groups Boyz II Men and the Backstreet Boys , it was truly an epic tournament. But it wouldn’t have been possible without all of you, the fans. All of your vigorous voting resulted in some shocking upsets , some heated matchups and some rally-from-behind wins, making this a true battle of the boy bands. Are you happy with Westlife winning the Battle of the Boy Bands ? Let us know in the comments. Related Videos Battle Of The Boy Bands Related Artists Westlife Jonas Brothers

During ‘MTV First: Justin Bieber,’ pop star says ‘As Long As You Love Me’ could be the next track to hit radio. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber is still riding high off the release of his new video for “Boyfriend.” But with the release of his next album, Believe, not too far off, Bieber told MTV News that fans might get the chance to hear more from the June 19 release sooner rather than later. “Why did I choose ‘Boyfriend’ [for my first single]? I just thought it was … a song that most represented me at the time and what I wanted to put out there, ” he told Sway during “MTV First: Justin Bieber” on Thursday night (May 3). “It’s crazy, because even my next single after that is going to be better.” Bieber didn’t want to give out too many details about this even better next track, but he did reveal that the title recalls the title of a certain hit by ’90s teen idols the Backstreet Boys. “My next single, I don’t have it completely set. … I think it’s ‘As Long As You Love Me.’ It’s midtempo,” Bieber said. “I think it’s edgy.” With no exact details on when fans might get to hear the song, he dished that a song he wrote for his mother, Pattie Mallette, could drop on May 13, whether or not it makes the album. “I wrote a song for my mom. But I’m going to put it out on Mother’s Day,” he said, explaining why Mama Mallette was worthy of her own track, “[It’s] about the struggles, I say in the song. She had me at like the age I am now. [It’s about] just the struggles she went through and how brave she was, and I think the world needed to know that.” What did you think of the “Boyfriend” video? Share your reviews in the comments!
