Backstreet Boys And New Kids On The Block Close The AMAs

The boy bands bring their old favorites to the American Music Awards. By Jocelyn Vena New Kids On The Block perform with the Backstreet Boys at the 2010 American Music Awards on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/ AMA2010/ Getty Images They might have been the only nine guys who could close out a show as hectic as the American Music Awards. In a show filled with pop newcomers like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber , New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys graced the stage to show they still had the right stuff. Like any good boy-band performance, there were pyrotechnics and sweet dance moves. The pop supergroup started with a mash-up of the BSB hit “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and the NKOTB classic “Hangin’ Tough.” Soon the guys slowed it down for Backstreet’s “I Want It That Way” and then kicked it old school for the New Kids’ “Step by Step.” All nine guys took a dance break before they segued into “The Right Stuff,” complete with the New Kids’ infamous shuffle dance from the video. The spotlight once again fell on a BSB tune before they capped it off with “Larger Than Life,” complete with an “NKOTBSB” chant. Confetti fell from the sky as the guys closed out the show. Earlier in the night, all nine guys hit the AMA red carpet together. In an interview earlier this month, they teased that there was a chance they might record a track together. “It’s tough getting these guys in the studio. These young cats,” New Kid Joey McIntyre explained about his tourmates, the Backstreet Boys . “Well, it’s honestly, it is tough to get everybody together. Yes, we have lots of great intentions. LFO’s Rich Cronin Dies At 35

Singer was diagnosed with leukemia in 2005. By Mawuse Ziegbe Rich Cronin Photo: Gabe Palacio/ Getty Images Rich Cronin, the former frontman for boy band LFO, known for the 1999 hit “Summer Girls,” died Wednesday (September 8) of leukemia. He was 35. TMZ reports that the singer lost his long battle with cancer Wednesday afternoon after suffering a stroke. Cronin was first diagnosed with myelogenous leukemia in 2005 after complaining of exhaustion and headaches. He later established the Rich Cronin Hope Foundation to raise awareness for cancer treatment. Cronin’s manager Melissa Holland confirmed his death in a statement on the singer’s Facebook page. “On behalf of the Cronin family and all at the Hope Foundation and [his record label] Orange Freeze, thank you so much for your kind words and thoughts. Continue to post them as a tribute to a great man, a better artist and the best friend I could ever have.” Fellow boy-bander Lance Bass of ‘NSYNC tweeted about Cronin’s death, typing, “Sad sad day that Rich Cronin died- was a amazing guy. : (” Cronin, a native of Boston, shot to fame in the late ’90s as the frontman of LFO alongside bandmembers Brad Fischetti and Devin Lima, writing the breezy hit “Summer Girls,” which playfully name-checked Abercrombie & Fitch. Managed by onetime boy-band mogul Lou Pearlman, who also guided the early careers of ‘NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, the trio released their eponymous album in the same year. The album also yielded the hit “Girl on TV,” which featured Cronin’s reported flame Jennifer Love Hewitt in the accompanying video. He also penned the group’s second album, Life Is Good, according to a biography on the singer’s MySpace page. However, Cronin later slammed Pearlman , accusing him of swindling the group out of millions of dollars and publishing rights and maintaining inappropriate relationships with other artists he managed. “I’ve had to go to therapy … he’s really a creepy guy,” Cronin said in 2009. Cronin briefly bounced back from his health and professional issues as a castmember of the 2007 VH1 reality show “Mission: Man Band,” which featured former boy-band stars Chris Kirkpatrick from ‘NSYNC, Color Me Badd’s Bryan Abrams and 98 Degrees’ Jeff Timmons. The show, helmed by Grammy-winning producer Bryan-Michael Cox, followed the stars’ attempt to get back in the limelight as the boy-band supergroup Sureshot. Cronin later released his first solo album, Billion Dollar Sound, in 2008, and LFO announced a reunion and tour in June 2009 before disbanding later the same year. In January, Cronin appeared to be back doing what he loved and tweeted about working on new music. “Hey guys I’m just in Boston writing in the studio,” he wrote . “Hoping to make it all work!” Share your memories of Rich Cronin in the comments below. Joel McHale on Community’s Upcoming Apollo 13 Episode and the ‘Murderous’ Betty White

Community earned a lot of buzz in its first season on the air, but there’s still a lot of people who have yet to discover it, and Joel McHale met almost all of those people on the red carpet for the Chopard pre-Emmy bash in Los Angeles last weekend (among the odd questions he had to field: “Growing up, did you prefer the Backstreet Boys or N Sync?”). Needless to say, he was happy to actually talk about the show to Movieline, and dished on the cast’s recent Comic-Con sojourn, guest star Betty White, and his favorite unaired pilot.

Debbie Gibson, Tiffany To Star In ‘Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid’

1980s rival pop stars will appear together in Syfy Saturday night movie. By Adam Rosenberg Debbie Gibson Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images If you thought watching a supersized shark take on an equally supersized octopus was entertaining, wait’ll you get a load of what the Asylum is cooking up for Syfy. Prepare yourself for … “Mega Python vs. Gatoroid”! The Hollywood Reporter reveals that 1980s pop stars Deborah “Debbie” Gibson and Tiffany will star together in the Syfy original Saturday night movie, to be produced by “Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus” studio the Asylum. Both Gibson and Tiffany have previously appeared in Asylum films — Gibson in “Mega Shark …” and Tiffany in “Mega Piranha” — but this is the first time the duo will appear in a film together. Gibson will play an animal rights activist who specializes in freeing — what else? — exotic snakes from pet stores and setting them loose in the Everglades, where they, of course, grow to enormous sizes. Tiffany is set for the role of a park ranger who “uses dangerous methods to save endangered alligators.” The script reportedly includes a scene in which the two stars brawl, moving from a bar interior out to the muddy swamp. The project apparently came about after Tiffany approached Syfy with the request that she and Gibson appear together in a movie, playing on their old pop culture rivalry. Gibson and Tiffany were never actually at odds with one another, but they were frequently portrayed that way by the media. “Mega Python vs. Gatoroid” is set to start shooting this month. “Pet Sematary” and classic-Madonna-video helmer Mary Lambert will direct, with a script from Naomi Selfman, who wrote the 2004 horror flick “Evil Eyes,” starring Adam Baldwin, Jennifer Gates and Udo Kier. Justin Bieber Kicks Off Tour With High-Flying Stunts

Usher appeared onstage in Hartford for a few seconds, but didn’t sing. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber (file) Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage HARTFORD, Connecticut — Lights went down, low sticks went up and lots and lots of screaming commenced as a video of Justin Bieber playing video games plays flashed on the stage, before the teen dream finally appeared in person. Dressed in all-white, the teen idol showed off some karate moves, whipping the crows at the XL Center into a frenzy as he opened with “Love Me.” Little did they know that a few high kicks would be the least of his stunts on Wednesday, the opening night of his My World 2.0 summer tour. Bieber made his way to center stage to sing “Heartbreaker Baby.” He demonstrated his pop-and-lock skills before asking the crowd, “What’s up? We do it all for you guys!” He then slowed it down a bit, using his sugary-sweet R&B-tinged voice for “U Smile.” For “Runaway Love” he did some chair choreography reminiscent of the Backstreet Boys “As Long as You Love Me” video. “I’m feeling real good, how about you all?” he asked. “I see a lot of beautiful girls out there.” In order to see those ladies better, Bieber broke out his acoustic guitar as he sat in a heart-shaped cage that was lifted above the crowd. He played “Never Let You Go” while suspended in the air, followed by “Favorite Girl.” He then got to what has become a favorite (if envy-producing) moment in his shows. “The one thing I do when I get to every city is find one less lonely girl,” he told the room before bringing a lucky fan onto the stage, giving her roses and singing “One Less Lonely Girl.” For his next stunt, during “Somebody to Love,” Bieber and his dancers took to the air and Bieber pretended to climb the side of a building and spray-paint it. He slowed down the pace a bit for “Overboard,” which features opening act Jessica Jarrell. The girls went crazy when they held hands for part of it. He asked the ladies, “Isn’t she amazing? You guys are amazing.” Part of the night belonged to Legacy, Bieber’s YouTube-discovered backup singers, who performed an a cappella version of radio hits including Usher’s “OMG” and Train’s “Hey Soul Sister.” After leaving the stage, Bieber came out again and treated the crowd to “Up” as he descended from the ceiling in a cage. Following a break, he performed, “One Time” and “That Should Be Me.” He even sat down at the drums for “Walk This Way.” Then Sean Kingston joined Bieber onstage for their party-ready collabo, “Eenie Meenie.” “Down to Earth” was the last song of the set. But to no one’s surprise Bieber returned for an encore. “I couldn’t just leave you guys,” he said, before singing “With You” a cappella. Then he gave the girls what they wanted: “Baby.” At the very end, mentor Usher showed up said a quick “hi” to the fans and retreated backstage. Bieber soon followed and the night came to a close.
