Women are twice as likely to struggle with anxiety disorders in comparison to men, new research from the University of Cambridge, which was published in the journal Brain and Behavior, suggests. According to The Independent, researchers also found that the disorder, which is estimated to affect four in every 100 people, disproportionately impacts those under 35 years of age. “Anxiety disorders can make life extremely difficult for some people and it is important for our health services to understand how common they are and which groups of people are at greatest risk,” said Olivia Remes with the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at Cambridge… [ MadameNoire ] You Can Now Crowdfund Your Divorce If you want out of your marriage but can’t quite afford to do so, you just might be able to get some help with that. Serena Williams Covers The New Issue Of Glamour Magazine This month, the #BlackGirlMagic goddess spoke to Melissa Harris-Perry for Glamour’s June cover story and talked about a myriad of topics Black Girl Magic/Fan Investment MHP: You and Venus were the original black-girl magic. People who do not know you feel a personal stake in every match you play. SW: That’s something. I meet people who say, “Girl, I watch every match, and I pray for you.” I feel that energy and those prayers. Sometimes when I’m down on the court, in the back of my mind, I’m thinking, “They want me to win. Is there anything else I can give?” It encourages me to do better, to fight harder. Drake Curse MHP: Twitter ate Drake alive after your loss at the U.S. Open [then rumored to be her boyfriend, he was accused of having distracted her]. Is that fair? SW: No. I don’t think that was fair. I’m the one who’s playing, who’s making mistakes or making winners. I’m not one to blame anyone else for anything. And I don’t think anyone else should either. I played a really good opponent that day. And I wasn’t at my best. Pay Equality For Women MHP: The U.S. women’s soccer team has been challenging inequity in women’s sports, fighting for equal pay. It’s an issue facing NCAA women in multiple fields [including tennis, where women make 80 cents for each dollar men earn]. Want to weigh in on this? SW: These sports have a lot of work to do. And I really hope that I can be helpful in that journey because I do believe that women deserve the same pay. We work just as hard as men do. I’ve been working, playing tennis, since I was three years old. And to be paid less just because of my sex—it doesn’t seem fair. Will I have to explain to my daughter that her brother is gonna make more money doing the exact same job because he’s a man? If they both played sports since they were three years old, they both worked just as hard, but because he’s a boy, they’re gonna give him more money? Like, how am I gonna explain that to her? In tennis we’ve had great pioneers that paved the way—including Venus, who fought so hard for Wimbledon to pay women the same prize money they pay men, and Billie Jean King, who is one of the main reasons Title IX exists. Having Kids MHP: You mentioned kids. Do you want a family of your own? SW: Yeah. I definitely want to have kids one day. That’s something I’ve always wanted since as long as I could remember. And the older I get, the more I’m like, “I’m too young!” [Laughs.] MHP: The older you get, the more real it gets, the more you realize how hard parenting is, right? SW: Yeah. I was just joking with Venus about this yesterday and saying, “I’m far too young!” Hopefully I’ll be able to mature one of these days, get serious, and at least have them pretty fast. Moral of the story: Keep praying for Serena, leave Aubrey alone, pay her what you owe her, and find her a bae for whom she can tote a gut full. Alicia Keys Talks About Giving Up Make Up And No Longer Hiding Alicia Keys has been promoting her new music lately and you may have noticed that she’s completely eschewed the whole beat face honey movement … In this week's #LennyLetter the phenomenal @aliciakeys shares why she's embracing #nomakeup ! Read her essay here: https://t.co/AnFW7EkBsM . — Lenny (@lennyletter) May 31, 2016 This week Alicia wrote about her decision to go makeup free for Lenny Letter . We’ve excerpted a few portions below: Before I started my new album, I wrote a list of all the things that I was sick of. And one was how much women are brainwashed into feeling like we have to be skinny, or sexy, or desirable, or perfect. One of the many things I was tired of was the constant judgment of women. The constant stereotyping through every medium that makes us feel like being a normal size is not normal, and heaven forbid if you’re plus-size. Or the constant message that being sexy means being naked. I realized that during this process, I wrote a lot of songs about masks filled with metaphors about hiding. I needed these songs because I was really feeling those insecurities. I was finally uncovering just how much I censored myself, and it scared me. Who was I anyway? Did I even know HOW to be brutally honest anymore? Who I wanted to be? In one song I wrote, called “When a Girl Can’t Be Herself,” it says, In the morning from the minute that I wake up / What if I don’t want to put on all that makeup / Who says I must conceal what I’m made of / Maybe all this Maybelline is covering my self-esteem No disrespect to Maybelline, the word just worked after the maybe. But the truth is … I was really starting to feel like that — that, as I am, I was not good enough for the world to see. Sounds like Cover Girl dodged a bullet. But barely. Alicia is still giving up makeup after all… Speaking of which. Despite writing the song, Keys didn’t immediately arrive at the decision to give up cosmetics. Initially she had a lot of fears about being caught looking busted . Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn’t put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it??? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me. Keys began practicing meditation, which seemed to help give her some clarity, but her real aha moment came when she had a less than glamorous photoshoot: It wasn’t until I walked into one of my first shoots for my new album recently that the issue was front and center again. I’d just come from the gym, had a scarf under my baseball cap, and the beautiful photographer Paola (never met a Paola I didn’t like) said, “I have to shoot you right now, like this! The music is raw and real, and these photos have to be too!” I was shocked. Instantly, I became a bit nervous and slightly uncomfortable. My face was totally raw. I had on a sweatshirt! As far as I was concerned, this was my quick run-to-the-shoot-so-I-can-get-ready look, not the actual photo-shoot look. So I asked her, “Now?! Like right now? I want to be real, but this might be too real!!” And that was it. She started to shoot me. It was just a plain white background, me and the photographer intimately relating, me and that baseball hat and scarf and a bunch of invisible magic circulating. And I swear it is the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt. I felt powerful because my initial intentions realized themselves. My desire to listen to myself, to tear down the walls I built over all those years, to be full of purpose, and to be myself! The universe was listening to those things I’d promised myself, or maybe I was just finally listening to the universe, but however it goes, that’s how this whole #nomakeup thing began. Once the photo I took with Paola came out as the artwork for my new song “In Common,” it was that truth that resonated with others who posted #nomakeup selfies in response to this real and raw me. I hope to God it’s a revolution. ‘Cause I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing. What do you think about Alicia’s revelations? Will you be adopting the #nomakeup hashtag and lifestyle as well? In blended family news … Antonio And Terricka Cromartie Filming Reality Show Antonio Cromartie and his wife Terricka are set to show off their blended family preciousness on reality TV. As previously reported the couple’s expecting twins, baby 11 and 12 for the free agent, making them a family of 14. In Touch Weekly reports: When Terricka Cromartie first found out that she was pregnant with twins, she was hesitant to share the news with the world. And it’s easy to understand why; her NFL pro husband, Antonio, had gotten a vasectomy prior to conceiving the twins, who mark babies No. 11 and 12 for the 32-year-old football pro (who has eight children from previous relationships, in addition to his two kids — Jurzie, 6, and Jagger, 4, with Terricka). But in an exclusive interview with In Touch, Terricka and Antonio say that they are not only happy with their decision to share the news with the world — but they’re about to share even more, as they are filming a reality show about their blended family! When asked what the biggest misconception about his family is, Antonio couldn’t help but joke “everything,” and his wife hopes that opening their private life up to the public will change everyone’s perception of their unconventional, modern family. Sheesh, 12 kids???? Will YOU be watching??? Instagram
