This shortened NBA season looks like it may just be exciting after all… After using the amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups, the Knicks have been hunting a new starting point guard. Mike Bibby recently signed, but that’s not exactly the answer. Baron Davis was amnestied by the Cavs and cleared waivers, opening up the opportunity for him to sign anywhere. And that anywhere has turned out to be the Knicks, according to ESPN.com and confirmed by Ken Berger of CBSSports.com With the Knicks being well over the cap, the deal had to be for the veteran minimum or the “mini mid-level” the Knicks have. According to SI.com, it is indeed for the $2.5 mini mid-level. Which is why this makes a lot of sense for New York. It’s a low risk, potentially high value signing. Davis still has a lot of game left, it just comes down to motivation and health. And with him being in New York playing on a solid Knicks team, you have to think he’s going to be ready. He’s dealing with a back injury though, and could be out up to 8-10 weeks. However, after being amnetied by the Cavs, that timetable miraculously dropped to 4-6. Other teams reportedly going after Davis were the Heat and Lakers, so the Knicks landing their target to likely start once he’s healthy is a big move. Not to say Davis is going to be a star or anything, but considering the options right now for New York, Davis is about as good as they could do in their situation. Bibby is a nice veteran backup, Toney Douglas isn’t a point guard and Iman Shumpert is mostly an unknown. Davis could at least step in and handle the offense. Knicks fans, hate it or love it?!?! Here’s the details: Tiki Barber is switching careers. After his failed NFL comeback attempt, the former New York Giant is working with international shipping company First Global Xpress. Barber sent a vague e-mail to friends notifying them of his new gig, and a company spokeswoman confirmed he’ll “partner with us on some business development opportunities,” but didn’t elaborate. Other sources told us Barber wanted to head a consultancy/placement service for ex-NFLers to become mentors to young athletes, but it’s unclear whether FGX has any ties to that business. Looks like Mr. Kardashian Odom will be staying in LA LA Land… The NBA, as owners of the New Orleans Hornets, won’t trade All-Star guard Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers. NBA spokesman Mike Bass says: “It’s not true that the owners killed the deal, the deal was never discussed at the Board of Governors meeting and the league office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons.” The Lakers trade to obtain Hornets’ Paul for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom hit a snag Thursday night, sources tell ESPN.com’s Marc Stein. Sources said that a group of NBA owners, assembled in New York for the ratification of the league’s new labor pact with the players, protested vigorously that the league-owned Hornets were trading Paul to the star-studded Lakers and convinced NBA commissioner David Stern to intervene. After it fell through, Paul simply wrote, “WoW,” on his Twitter page. The Houston Rockets were the third team in the trade and would have obtained Gasol from the Hornets in return for Luis Scola, Kevin Martin, Goran Dragic, and a 2012 first-round pick that Houston received from the New York Knicks, sources said. Looks like David Stern will make the first day of practice awkward for all parties as teams gather on Friday for the first time this season. Lamar Odom took to his Twitter page to share in the confusion: If this had gone down we most definitely seen some tears shed on E! when the next season of Lamar and Khloe’s reality show starts back. Odom, the NBA’s sixth man of the year last season whose marriage to Khloe Kardashian and E! network reality show put him at the center of Hollywood’s love affair with the Lakers, sounded devastated to be leaving his adopted hometown in an interview on 710 ESPN radio earlier Thursday.
