Are people ready for “race bending” in comics? “The Flash” Casts Black Actress In White Character Role The new series based on The Flash recently aired, with a few notable changes to the traditional story canon. Most notably, The Flash’s eventual girlfriend, Iris West, is now a young Black woman. One LA Times writer examines the response to the change: The critics of “race-bending” or “race-switching” in adaptations of comic book lore don’t seem to be racist. Rather, as one website summarizes their complaint, they object to “political correctness pandering meant to foster the illusion of diversity, which is disrespectful to the tradition of these characters AND the general public.” But, as comics nerds of a certain age remember, the “tradition” of comic books in the 1950s and ’60s was to ignore blacks — perhaps to avoid offending readers in the South (or their racist parents). But it wasn’t just racial diversity that was lacking in the so-called Silver Age. Though many comic book creators were Jews or Italian Americans (Bob Kane, Batman’s creator, started out as Robert Kahn), the DC Universe of the time was Earth-WASP. In the 1970s comics discovered African Americans virtually overnight and soon black characters appeared to challenge not just super villains but “The Man” as well. The high, or low, point of the “relevance” craze was “I Am Curious Black,” in which Lois Lane entered a matter-transformer and emerged as a black woman. (“Suppose I couldn’t change back?” the altered Lois asks the Man of Steel. “Would you marry me? Even if I’m black?”) There was no such self-conscious racial melodrama in the premiere of “The Flash.” Iris’ race wasn’t emphasized or agonized about — which was refreshing. One could argue that this sort of comfortable color-blindness understates the persistence of racism in America, but it’s much closer to reality than the all-white Metropolis crowds who marveled at Superman’s exploits in the 1950s. And that’s the best refutation of the comics’ nerds complaint that the new approach is “disrespectful to the tradition of these characters.” That tradition was a dishonest and dishonorable one — as DC Comics admitted in a 1970 story in which an elderly black man rips into Green Lantern: “I been readin’ about you … how you work for the blue skins … and how on a planet someplace you helped out the orange skins … and you done considerable for the purple skins! Only there’s skins you never bothered with — ! The black skins! I want to know … how come?! Answer me that, Mr. Green Lantern!” Over the top, but he had a point. Your thoughts? And if that mood happens to call while you and your fellow meth-head boyfriend are under arrest an en route to the clink — then so be it. Via TheSmokingGun : After being arrested, a Wisconsin couple had sex in the back of a police cruiser, an encounter that was interrupted when a cop heard the woman “begin to moan loudly” while her legs were “touching the ceiling” of the vehicle, according to a criminal complaint. Heather Basten, 29, and Travis Husnik, 33, were taken into custody by Oconto County Sheriff’s Department deputies after their car was spotted drifting into oncoming traffic on August 3. During questioning by cops, Basten, who was driving, and Husnik admitted they had been drinking. A deputy noted that there were two open cans of Busch Light on the car’s floorboard, and that Husnik “indicated one been belonged to him and the other to Heather.” Husnik, who was on probation, was handcuffed and placed in the rear of a police cruiser. He was soon joined there by Basten, who was driving without a license and had a used syringe in her purse. Basten reportedly said that she “used to shoot up meth with it.” While subsequently transporting the suspects, Deputy Adam Zahn “observed Travis lay onto of Heather in the backseat.” The cop then saw “Heather’s legs go up touching the ceiling and heard her begin to moan loudly.” Zahn stopped the cruiser, opened the rear door, and saw “Travis onto of Heather having sexual intercourse.” The complaint does not indicate whether the lovebirds were handcuffed (though it seems likely). Husnik’s pants and underwear were around his ankles and Basten’s shorts were “hiked up.” Which allowed Zahn to “see both of their privates,” the complaint notes. Details of the couple’s autoeroticism emerged following their recent Circuit Court sentencing. Husnik, a convicted felon with a lengthy rap sheet, was sentenced to 90 days in jail for lewd and lascivious conduct. Basten, who pleaded guilty to drunk driving and disorderly conduct, was sentenced to 48 days in custody and hit with fines and fees totaling $1236. Well, that’s disgusting.

After moving out and living separately from Robin for the better part of this year, Paula Patton has finally filed those papers and is saying an official “adios” to the married life. Time to cut the check, Mr. Officer Eric Garner To Sued NYPD For $75 Million Via NYDailyNews The family of a Staten Island man who died in an apparent police chokehold filed a notice of claim Tuesday saying they intend to file a $75 million lawsuit. Eric Garner’s wife and children sent the notice to city Controller Scott Stinger revealing they will name the city, the NYPD and eight cops in the suit. “The Office of Comptroller Scott M. Stringer confirms receipt of the notice of claim on behalf of Eric Garner. This claim is now under review,” said Stringer’s spokesman Eric Sumberg. We hope and pray they get every. Single. Dime. The mother to be of a baby boy also gushed to the mag about motherhood and explained why she chose fine azz actor/photographer Lance Gross to direct her shoot. ELLE.com reports: What kind of celebrity mom will you be? Would you take your son to award shows or fashion shows? I just plan to play it by ear. Everybody has their normal. And sometimes, award shows are a part of that. I have girlfriends who have that experience, and they’ll say ‘You know, I just really didn’t want to be without my child today.’ And it’s just that simple. It’s about finding your normal, whatever that may be. Tell us about your photo shoot with Lance Gross. What was the experience like? What was your vision for the shoot? I had a chance to work with Lance Gross during a video shoot for the [“Here I Am”] album, and I remember looking at his Instagram page, and seeing all these crazy hot photos. I texted him, and he said he’s really been into [photography]. So we had been planning for a year to shoot and of course, I got pregnant and thought I’ll have Lance shoot the photos for my pregnancy. Lance and I had all these great ideas and we just put our heads together to execute the looks. It was a lot of fun. Some pregnant women get flack for nude photos. Why was it important to you to include those in the shoot? I don’t know why they would get flack. It’s really—I won’t say amazing—it’s Godmazing [laughs] watching your body carry a human. I took a birthing class and I was amazed by all the things this woman was saying to me about birthing and what the body does naturally. Why wouldn’t you want to celebrate that?
