This is so sad. Gun violence has claimed another young victim. Via Gawker reports : Police in Greenville, South Carolina, say a 3-year-old boy was killed Friday night after a pink gun he mistook for a toy accidentally discharged. Temorej Smith and his 7-year-old sister were in the bedroom of their unit at The Plantations at Haywood apartments, playing around with a pink handgun. Their parents were out of the house at the time, but their grandparents were reportedly sitting in the nearby living room. As the two siblings were playing with the weapon, it suddenly went off and Temorej sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Greenville Police have since ruled the boy’s death an accident. No charged have been filed, but the investigation continues. Police spokesman Johnathan Bragg said the incident tragically illustrates the importance of securing all household weapons. “If you have guns, if you own guns mostly we would prefer you have them in a lock box,” Bragg told News 4. “At least have them out of the reach of children.” Funeral services for Temorej will be held Wednesday afternoon at Golden View Baptist Church in Fountain Inn. This is so sad… Our condolences to his family. Gun owners, please, please, please be careful about leaving your weapons loaded and accessible to kids!
NAACP Creates HIV Manual for Black Churches Houston pastor Timothy W. Sloan has felt for years that he needed to talk about HIV and AIDS with his congregation . But he worried the 3,000 mostly African-American parishioners at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Humble, Texas, could be offended and leave the church or curtail their giving. “On a scale of 1 to 10, it was a 6,” he said of his concerns. Then, a year and a half ago, he joined a group of pastors organized by the NAACP to write a manual for church leaders like himself on talking to their congregations about a disease that has a disproportionate effect on the black community. Sloan spoke to his congregation about the issue soon after. They surprised him with a standing ovation. Now, Sloan hopes others can use the manual he helped create to talk to their congregations. This month, the NAACP released it and a 61-page activity manual at the group’s convention in Texas. Shavon Arline-Bradley, the director of health programs for the NAACP, who helped oversee the manual’s creation, said it makes sense for the nation’s largest civil rights organization to be involved in the discussion of HIV and AIDS. “People look at us as just civil rights, and what they’re missing is that health is one of the most pressing civil rights issues of our time,” Arline-Bradley said. Religious leaders who helped with the manual said black churches have been reluctant to talk about the disease. That’s in part because the topic is wrapped up with sex and homosexuality, often taboo topics in the church. “Sex is not something church people like to talk about. It’s something they like to do,” said the Rev. Joseph Smith, the assistant to the pastor of the Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Va., and one of the people who worked on the manual. Despite the squeamishness, the NAACP said black churches can play a role in combating the alarming impact of HIV on the black community. African-Americans make up almost half of all new HIV infections, and blacks are less likely to get treatment and more likely to die of complications from AIDS than any other race. The guides suggest pastors talk about HIV in sermons, connect their churches with groups that serve people with HIV, promote safe sex and access to condoms, and organize church-based HIV screening drives. The manual also includes facts about the disease and passages from the Bible to serve as inspiration. Discuss… Source

We thought they would always love you Whitney The fans lined the streets to pay their respects to a pop diva. Now Newark, New Jersey residents are outraged that $187,000 of their money will be used to pay for policing Whitney Houston’s funeral: Nearly 200 cops were on hand to keep the crowds away from the singer’s glitzy ceremony on February 18. While celebrities like Kevin Costner and Alicia Keyes paid respect to the singer in New Hope Baptist Church, thousands of residents grieved in the cold outside. Now CBS reports the city will foot the overtime bill for the cops that stood outside the church, the funeral home and the reception after the service. One Newark resident, Quincy Ruffin, told CBS that the star’s family should pay. Another resident Minerva DelValle said: “I think it was a waste of time and then now we find out what happened and how she actually died, it makes you think twice saying: ‘Was it worth it or not?’” As RadarOnline.com previously reported, “yayo” was found in Whitney’s system and in the hotel bathroom where she died. Newark Councilwoman Mildred Crump believes the police overtime was justified. She said: “If they had not been there someone may have been trampled, seriously hurt.” Source More On Bossip! Police found some cocaine residue when they searched the singer’s room following her death in February. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston Photo: Ebet Roberts/ Getty Images Police investigating the death of Whitney Houston recovered traces of cocaine in the Beverly Hills hotel room where the pop diva died last month . According to TMZ , documents from investigators do not reveal the quantity of the drug found but say simply that among the items recovered by police was “white, powdery remnants.” Quoting unnamed sources, the site said the powder tested positive for cocaine. The L.A. County coroner revealed last week that accidental drowning was the official cause of Houston’s death , adding that cocaine use and heart disease were also contributing factors. According to the coroner’s report, traces of cocaine were found in Houston’s system at the time of death, along with Xanax, Flexeril, marijuana and Benadryl, which officials said played no role in her death. At the time, it was reported that no cocaine was found in the singer’s room when she died, but coroner spokesman Craig Harvey noted that cocaine metabolites were found in her system, leading them to conclude that Houston was a chronic user of the drug. A number of prescription pills were recovered in the Beverly Hills hotel room, but officials from the coroner’s office said there wasn’t an unusual amount of medication. Houston, 48, was laid to rest in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey, on February 18 at an invite-only funeral service at the New Hope Baptist Church in a service that included Stevie Wonder, mentor Clive Davis and CeCe Winans. TMZ also reported that Beverly Hills Police detectives are not investigating the rumors that a friend of Houston’s allegedly removed cocaine from the room following her death because they are not convinced evidence of the drug was swept away before their arrival. Houston struggled with drug and alcohol issues for many years before her death. ‘Nobody’s child should be shot in cold blood for anything,’ Jeezy tells MTV News in reaction to the death of the Florida teenager. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Young Jeezy Photo: Getty Images The hip-hop community has been particularly vocal about the tragic shooting death of . ?uestlove, Big Boi and Wyclef Jean, like so many other Americans, have spoken out in the support of the 17-year-old boy who was murdered while walking home through a gated Florida community. During an interview with MTV News in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Young Jeezy expressed both his concern and support with equal vigor. “I feel very deeply as a community leader and as a product of my culture,” the self-proclaimed Thug Motivator said. “I feel like we all got to get together and stop this, ’cause I have a son his age and I just feel like that could’ve been either of our children.” Martin was walking from the store to his dad’s home in the Sanford, Florida, gated community on February 26 when he was spotted by community watchman George Zimmerman. According to reports, Zimmerman, who was suspicious of the teen who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, called 911, but was instructed by the dispatcher not to pursue Martin. By the time police arrived on the scene, Zimmerman had shot Trayvon dead and claimed self-defense. Police did not arrest Zimmerman, who they claim is protected by the so-called “Stand Your Ground” law, which allows Floridians to shoot anyone they believe is threatening them. Martin, however, did not have a weapon. All police found on his body was a bag of Skittles, a can of iced tea and a cellphone. On Thursday (March 22), the Sanford police chief announced that he was temporarily stepping down due to overwhelming pressure from the case. On Wednesday in New York City, demonstrators flooded Union Square in support of Martin in what was dubbed the Million Hoodie March . The tragic incident has forced Jeezy to think about his own children. “My son is a good kid. Does he do stuff? Of course, that’s what kids do. But nobody’s child should be shot in cold blood for anything, especially if they didn’t harm or hurt another individual,” he said. The fact that Martin is black and Zimmerman is Hispanic has added a racial sting to the killing, but Jeezy downplayed the racial element and called for unity. “I feel the racial line and the tension of it, I get it, but we’re gonna stand strong on the black and the brown side on this one,” he said. “We’re gonna stand together. I betcha that.” The Snowman urges that everyone lend their voice because there is a bigger societal issue at hand. “This is real, I understand that there are a lot of things goin’ on in the world and times are hard for everybody right now, but when you start having adults kill children for any reason, then we’re on our way to something we don’t want to be at,” he said. “The minute we accept that, we stand for nothing.” Related Artists Young Jeezy

After all the back and forth over whether or not Bobby Brown was invited to attend Whitney Houston’s funeral it appears he wasn’t able be in attendance for the full event. The singer was spotted leaving the church in funeral attire consoling his other children. Bobby Brown has released a statement regarding what happened this afternoon: My children and I were invited to the funeral of my ex-wife Whitney Houston. We were seated by security and then subsequently asked to move on three separate occasions. I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continue to ask us and no one else to move. Security then prevented me from attempting to see m daughter Bobbi Kristina. In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene. My children are completely distraught over the events. This was a day to honor Whitney. I doubt Whitney would have wanted this to occur. I will continue to pay my respects to my ex-wife the best way I know how. SMH… Seems wrong to treat him that way doesn’t it? Or was it inappropriate for him to be there after all they went through together? SplashNews More On Bossip!
