Chris Matthews Show: Hillary Should Replace Biden to Help Obama’s Re-election

The panel of the syndicated “Chris Matthews Show” this weekend campaigned for Hillary Clinton to replace Joe Biden as Vice President in order to assist Barack Obama’s re-election in 2012 and set her up for a successful presidential bid in 2016.  As NewsBusters reported Wednesday, Chris Matthews on that evening’s “Hardball” had former Virginia governor Doug Wilder and New York magazine’s John Heilemann on to discuss the merits of this strategy. The “Hardball” host must have found this quite compelling, for he decided to do an entire segment on his weekend program with guests Erin Burnett of CNBC, Norah O’Donnell of NBC, Howard Fineman of Newsweek, and Heilemann. After playing a clip from Wednesday’s “Hardball,” as well as a video of Clinton in 2009 saying she’d never run for president again, Matthews and his panel started the campaigning (videos follow with commentary): Readers are advised to notice a couple of interesting things in this video. First, panelists talked about what a great job Clinton’s doing as Secretary of State, yet no one elaborated on exactly what she’s done in the past eighteen months in this capacity that’s been so spectacular. Are relations with Iran any better? No. Are relations with Syria any better? No.  Are relations with North Korea any better? No. Are relations with Cuba or Venezuela any better? No. Has there been any improvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? No. As such, what exactly has Clinton done as Secretary of State that warrants such praise for her job performance?  As the answer appears to be “Very little,” the takeaway to all this unwarranted Hillary fawning is that her adoring fans in the media clearly would like to see her run in 2016, and that they are now participating in a makeover to facilitate that end. On the other hand, what does this say about their confidence in Obama? If these folks believe that he needs some help from Hillary to win re-election, isn’t that a bash at him? Consider that in a subsequent segment, Matthews asked if Obama’s young age – which was a benefit in 2008 – might hurt him in 2012. Heilemann felt it would:  JOHN HEILEMANN, NEW YORK MAGAZINE: I think the Republican attack on Obama is going to revolve around too liberal, but also too incompetent. And, and the inexperience that, that I think Republicans will try to hang around his neck, they’re going to say, “Look, you hired this guy. He was too young for this job. He didn’t know what he was doing. He didn’t have the experience, and look what’s happened.” Indeed. Of course, this is what the Clintons were saying in 2008 along with John McCain, Sarah Palin, and all those that opposed Obama’s election for exactly this reason. Now that it’s becoming apparent that this former junior senator from Illinois really was too inexperienced for the position, his fans in the media are actually suggesting he needs help from Hillary Clinton in 2012 to make the ticket look more competent. Maybe if these sycophants would have properly reported his glaring lack of qualifications during the primaries rather than gushed and fawned over him like teenyboppers near a rock star, this would never have happened. Hmmm.

Bret Baier Rebuts Rachel Maddow’s Claim That Fox Tries To Scare White People

Bret Baier on Thursday rebutted Rachel Maddow’s claim to David Letterman that Fox News intentionally tries to show images of “scary black people” in order to frighten white folks into voting for conservatives. As NewsBusters previously reported , the MSNBC host was a guest of the CBS “Late Show” Tuesday, and made some pretty disgusting comments about a competing cable news network.  Speaking with WOR radio’s Steve Malzberg, the host of FNC’s “Special Report” countered that because Fox addresses stories that other outlets don’t, that “doesn’t mean that there’s political motivation behind covering actual news.” This, of course, is a huge factor in liberal media bias, and is what folks that analyze news reports refer to as bias by omission (transcript follows with commentary, audio available here with relevant section at 10:00):  STEVE MALZBERG, HOST: Rachel Maddow and David Letterman. When you watch this, when you hear this, what do you, what do you think? BRET BAIER, FOX NEWS CHANNEL: Well, you know, I just think it’s unfortunate. I think, you know, I just don’t think that there are stories out there that aren’t getting covered, and just because they fit, you know, what Rachel Maddow thinks they fit as far as how she describes it, doesn’t mean that there’s political motivation behind covering actual news. MALZBERG: And it’s the pot calling the kettle if you, no pun intended, black because they’re as biased in their own right as any organization I’ve ever seen. BAIER: I mean, there is a, a big difference between news and opinion. And we talk about it all the time, and hopefully people at home can distinguish. MALZBERG: I think they are. BAIER: And hopefully they can make a choice. MALZBERG: I think the ratings show that. Indeed, but potentially more important is that not only doesn’t MSNBC care to report on things that don’t fit the network’s agenda, they have since the emergence of Barack Obama as a presidential candidate deemed that news outlets that cover things they don’t like are racist for doing so. As NewsBusters has been noting, such attacks have been more and more prevalent as Obama’s poll numbers have collapsed. How convenient.

Chris Matthews: Do Republicans Oppose Obama Because of His Race?

Chris Matthews on Friday actually asked a GOP Congressman if Republicans oppose President Obama because of his race. On the 5PM installment of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” Matthews brought on Rep. Bob Inglis, the Congressman from South Carolina who easily lost his primary fight in June to Tea Party candidate Trey Gowdy and has been badmouthing his Party ever since. Early in the conversation, Matthews asked, “What is it that`s gotten into your Party`s water supply, the Republican Party`s water supply, that makes them strangely hostile to the president, not just against his policies, but personally? Is it race?” Fixated on racial conspiracy theories, the “Hardball” host later in the interview asked, “If we had about a million Heide Klums trying to cross the border, the Mexican border of the United States, you know, the gorgeous blond from Germany or whatever, do you think that would be a problem with immigration right now, or is it really just ethnic?” (video follows with partial transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Welcome back to HARDBALL. After voting for TARP and telling voters not to listen to Glenn Beck too much, South Carolina Republican Congressman Bob Inglis was outvoted in his primary this year. Now he`s offering up some very honest advice for his party and some very scary stories from his time on the trail. Here`s how Mr. Inglis described one campaign donor meeting to David Corn at “Mother Jones” — quote — “They say, `Bob, what don`t you get? Barack Obama is a socialist, communist, Marxist, who wants to destroy the American economy, so he can take over as dictator. Health care is part of that, and he wants to open up the Mexican border and turn the United States into a Muslim nation.`” Congressman Inglis joins us tonight from Greenville, South Carolina. Well, that was a funny conversation. Somebody actually thought that the Muslims would be pouring over the Mexican border. The Rio Grande protects us from Islam. These people have got a problem. (LAUGHTER) REP. BOB INGLIS (R), SOUTH CAROLINA: I guess so. It`s — I think it`s generally not seen as a Muslim nation, but — Mexico isn`t. MATTHEWS: Well, what is — what is — let`s talk about the conspiracy theories. What is it that`s gotten into your party`s water supply, the Republican Party`s water supply, that makes them strangely hostile to the president, not just against his policies, but personally? Is it race? Later in the conversation, Matthews actually said the following: MATTHEWS: I can`t resist asking this. I got to ask this question. If we had about a million Heide Klums trying to cross the border, the Mexican border of the United States, you know, the gorgeous blond from Germany or whatever, do you think that would be a problem with immigration right now, or is it really just ethnic? The people from a different ethnic background. If Heidi Klum, by the million, was trying to cross the border, I figure a lot of guys would be down there welcoming her personally. What`s your view? I want to make this a little ludicrous because I think it`s obvious it`s ethnic. And I want people just to admit it. So, in Matthews’ distorted view, Republicans oppose Obama’s policies because of his race, and Americans that are against illegal immigration only feel this way because those coming across the border are Mexican. And this guy has his own show on a cable news network. Tough to believe, isn’t it?

‘The Other Guys’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

Before hopping in the squad car with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, check out these fun facts. By Eric Ditzian Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell and Steve Coogan in “The Other Guys” Photo: Sony Pictures Up on the big screen, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay have what you might call “vocational schizophrenia.” They hopscotch from the local-news business to the NASCAR circuit to the lines of the happily unemployed. Now, after “Anchorman,” “Talladega Nights” and “Step Brothers,” comes “The Other Guys,” an action comedy that has McKay in the director’s chair and Ferrell teaming up with Mark Wahlberg for a flick about two New York Police Department pencil-pushers who get pulled into the middle of a multibillion-dollar fraud case. But whereas Bernie Madoff perpetrated his crime via expensive suits and stuffy country clubs, the villains in “Other Guys” take breaks from stealing cash to fire guns, blow up buildings and rob stores. It’s up to Ferrell and Wahlberg to get away from their desks, brush up on their surveillance skills and risk life and limb to bring some justice to the city streets and bank accounts. MTV News has been conducting our own investigation on this project for a year — tracking each development and bringing you inside peeks at the production — and now, we present to you another of our cheat sheets: everything you need to know about “The Other Guys.” Rounding Up the Guys We first chatted with McKay about the movie last summer, when he’d flown into New York to kick-start the casting process. He already had Ferrell and Wahlberg locked down and was looking to round out the rest of the cast. By autumn, the pieces started to fall into place : Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson signed on to play rival cops, and Steve Coogan came aboard to play the central bad guy. Going Behind the Screen As the film shifted into production, MTV News was lucky enough to be invited onto the New York set for an exclusive look at the production . Ferrell and Wahlberg gave us a tour around their police precinct, joking about the film’s “Avatar”-like special effects and revealing one character’s daily affirmation: “Nobody does it better. Nobody!” But that visit wasn’t the only chance we got to talk to the cast and crew. Separately, Wahlberg revealed to us his epic day on set with Derek Jeter — or, to be more specific, how his character gets into an unfortunate confrontation with Jeter that results in the Yankee shortstop being shot in the leg. Johnson bragged about how he and Jackson were the true superstars on set. And McKay talked about Wahlberg’s balletic dance moves , some of the movie’s action scenes, and how the first cut ran over four hours. These Guys Can’t Take Anything Seriously So what is this movie all about? It’s about hope and Barack Obama — at least that’s what Ferrell and McKay will tell you . What’s more, they’ll try to convince you they shot this movie on VHS tapes . And Jackson will wax poetic about his “man love” with Johnson . If you’re looking for serious answers, you’ve come to the wrong place. Then again, if you’re looking for a serious movie, “Other Guys” ain’t for you. But if you dig a whole lot of hilarious weirdness of the type you got in “Anchorman” or “Step Brothers,” then a few hours with “The Other Guys” is exactly what you want. Just check out one early scene, in which Ferrell and Wahlberg get into a ridiculous argument . “If I were a lion and you were a tuna, I would swim out in the middle of the ocean and eat you,” Wahlberg says. “First of all, a lion swimming in the ocean? Lions don’t like water,” Ferrell responds. “If you’d placed it near a river or some sort of fresh-water source, that’d make sense. But you find yourself in the ocean, 20 foot waves — I’m assuming it’s off the coast of South Africa — coming up against a full-grown, 800-pound tuna, with his 20 or 30 friends, you lose that battle! You lose that battle nine times out of 10!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Other Guys.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Jay Leno: ‘Obama Is 49, Which Is Eight Points Higher Than His Approval Rating’

Comedian Jay Leno on Wednesday wished President Obama a Happy Birthday by making fun of him in the opening monologue of NBC’s “Tonight Show.”  “We want to start off by saying Happy Birthday to President Barack Obama,” Leno teased. “He is 49, which is eight points higher than his approval rating.” As “Tonight Show” viewers know, these jokes always come in threes (video follows with transcript): JAY LENO: Welcome to the “Tonight Show,” and we want to start off by saying Happy Birthday to President Barack Obama. He is… [Cheers and applause] LENO: He is 49, which is eight points higher than his approval rating. Wow. [Laughter] LENO: If you would like to get him a a gift, he’s registered at Bed, Bath and Blame it on Bush. That’s the store. [Laughter and applause] LENO: What, did you see the cake they had for him? They had a huge cake. A little different than most birthday parties. What he did was he didn’t blow out the candles, he just taxed them until they finally gave up and went out on their own. Delicious! Absolutely delicious.

Schultz: Republicans Want To Politically ‘Assassinate’ Pres. Obama’s Agenda

How far have we come from the era of “Dissent Is Patriotic” stickers on the bumpers of your local lefties during the Bush administration?  A host on the second-highest rated cable news network has equated political dissent with . . . assassination.   On his MSNBC show this evening, Ed Schultz stated: “Now I’m putting my cards on the table tonight as I do every night. The Republican party is on a mission to politically assassinate the president’s agenda across the board.  They want to shoot down everything.” Note how Schultz reinforces the assassination theme by adding that Republicans want to “shoot down” everything.  Does political speech get much more vile than this?  Do Schultz’s MSNBC bosses approve this kind of reckless rhetoric?
