President Obama Expresses Support For Colin Kaepernick

As you’ve no doubt heard by now, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick chose not to stand for the national anthem before a preseason against the Green Bay Packers last week. The decision sparked a heated public debate, with some arguing that Kaepernick had disrespected his country and its military veterans. Others maintained that the former NFL standout (who lost his starting position to Blaine Gabbert last season) was exercising a constitutional right and calling attention to the critical matter of police brutality directed at people of color. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told the press after the game. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.” The 28-year-old added: “There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder. “When there’s significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it’s supposed to represent and this country is representing people the way that it’s supposed to, I’ll stand.” On Thursday, Kaepernick doubled-down on his protest by kneeling during the National Anthem  prior to his team’s matchup against the San Diego Chargers, thus sending the clear message that he has no intention of backing down from stance. Needless to say, it’s a complex issue, and numerous public figures have expressed their views on Kaepernick’s actions. Of course, from the start of the controversy most sought-after opinion has been that of President Barack Obama, who has remained silent on the issue of Kaepernick’s protest until today. Obama is currently in China for a Group of 20 summit, and during a press conference this morning, he was asked about his views on Kaepernick. The President had this to say: President Obama on Colin Kaepernick “I think he cares about some real legitimate issues that have to be talked about,” Obama said, in what a statement of somewhat less-than-full-throated support for Kaepernick’s refusal to stand. “He’s exercising his constitutional right to make a statement. I think there’s a long history of sports figures doing so.” Obama then expressed his empathy for veterans who feel that Kaepernick’s actions were indicative of a lack of respect for the sacrifices made by those who have fought in the US armed forces: “As a general matter, when it comes to the flag, and the National Anthem, and the meaning that that holds for our men and women in uniform and those who fought for us, that is a tough thing for them to get past, to then hear what his deeper concerns are.” Despite the fact that Obama didn’t take a hard-line stance on either side of the debate, his comments have resulted in harsh rebukes from his most strident critics. Of course, that should surprise absolutely no one who’s familiar with the climate of American politics in 2016.  View Slideshow: 20 Scandalous Sports Stories

Willie Robertson, Scott Baio Support Donald Trump at Republican National Convention

Willie Robertson, Scott Baio and Antonio Sabato Jr. were among the so-called celebrities who opened the Republican National Convention in Cleveland on Monday night. Each expressed his reason on stage for supporting Donald Trump. “Are you cheering because we’re ugly?” the Duck Dynasty star said to kick off primetime coverage of the event from Cleveland. Robertson went on to note similarities between himself and Trump, namely that both are successful businessmen who have anchor hit reality programs, “though I flew commercial here,” Willie joked. That’s not a bad line actually. Robertson then took aim at “media experts” who were dead wrong about Trump’s candidacy, assuming he would lose early on in the GOP primary and adding that “it must be humbling to be so wrong about so much for so long.” We’re not sure how slamming reporters from both sides of the aisle gets Trump votes, but hey. Robertson proceeded to play the divisive card, talking about southern roots and saying “they don’t know how to talk to folks like us,” people who “hunt, fish, pray and actually work for a living.” He concluded that Trump “may not be politically correct,” but he “always tells you the truth as he sees it” – and that’s why the Duck Commander CEO believes “Donald Trump will have your back.” Scott Baio also shared his thoughts live from Ohio, getting quickly to his main point in a speech that was short and not sweet. Not when it came to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton at least. She’s a a woman who feels she’s “entitled to the presidency,” Baio argued, while describing Trump is “a man doing this out of the goodness of his heart,” who “says what he means. and means what he says.” Once again, it’s not really clear why either of those statements are a reason to vote someone in to the Oval Office, but hey. Baio’s final message to attendees and viewers? “Let’s make America America again!” We don’t know what that means. Then there was Antonio Sabato Jr., who did not address the crowd in only his underwear, much to the chagrin of the women and gay men in attendance. (JUST KIDDING! There are no women or gay men in support of Donald Trump.) “My belief in this country and my faith in Jesus Christ have compelled me to speak now,” said the model and former Dancing with the Stars contestant. “Our rights have been trampled and our security threatened,” added Sabato, who detailed his decision to move to the United States from Rome in 1985 and who become a naturalized citizen in 1996. “Others who want to come to the U.S. to live and work should follow the same rules!” Sabato’s speech, which claimed that America is “weaker by almost every measure,” was short on specifics, yet heavy on passion. “Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton promote division,” he said with a straight face, adding: “Don’t be fooled: Donald Trump is for unity. Donald Trump believes in one America with liberty and justice for all.” View Slideshow: 16 Celebrities Who Actually Support Donald Trump

President Obama Speaks On Police Killings Of Philando Castile And Alton Sterling [Video]

Barack Obama took a moment after landing in Warsaw, Poland to speak out on the senseless killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile this afternoon…and let American citizens know that killings like these should concern all of us, not just the Black Lives they directly affect: “We have seen tragedies like these too many times. When incidents like this occur, there’s a big chunk of our fellow citizenry that feels as if – because of the color of their skin – they are not being treated the same. And that hurts. And that should trouble all of us. This is not just a black issue. It’s not just a Hispanic issue. It’s an American issue. All fair-minded people should be concerned.” TIME

Kate Middleton To Angelina Jolie: Please Be My Friend!!!

And here I imagined her being besties with Reese Witherspoon. Silly me. Actually, silly story.   OK! Magazine believes they’ve struck gold with a tale about the Duchess of Cambridge desperately trying to set up both play dates and friendship dates with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. “[Kate] is a huge fan and admires [Angelina] greatly,” a source allegedly told the magazine. It all started in June 2015, when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted Pitt and Jolie for tea. “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Pitt at Kensington Palace on Friday afternoon,” a palace aide informed Us Weekly at the time. “They discussed their shared interest in combating the illegal wildlife trade.” An insider added that William and Catherine were “really excited” about meeting the power couple. William and Catherine, joined by Prince George, waited to greet Pitt and Jolie outside Apartment 1A, as they did for Michelle and Barack Obama on April 22nd. View Slideshow: 12 Photos Of Kate Middleton Looking Regal as He*k Soon after – according to OK! – Catherine and Jolie were on the “phone for hours and sent lots and lots of emails.” The Hollywood couple are currently based in the UK, as Pitt is filming the World War II drama, Allied , so Catherine has extended an invitation from their kids to hang at Anmer Hall whenevs. If Jolie is craving grown-up time, Catherine would “love to take her to a pub or the ballet.” Her Royal Highness has even enlisted William and Prince Harry to pour on the charm and take Pitt to a football match. “It’s just a matter of sorting out dates!” the source added. As one who is well-versed in Catherine’s interests, I know that she doesn’t drink much and has never expressed any interest in ballet. Had the source suggested going to a playground with the kids, a cooking class or antiquing, I might have believed it.
