The verdict is in for Better Call Saul, and the people have determined that the highly-anticipated Breaking Bad prequel is every bit as addictive as its predecessor. Saul posted some of AMC’s best numbers ever for a series premiere last night, and the series set a new record for ratings in the all important 18-49 year old demographic. The series suffered a 57% drop from its lead-in The Walking Dead, because people really love their zombies, but even so, Better Call Saul Season 1 Episode 1 was a resounding success with critics and audiences alike. Saul pulled in 6.9 million viewers with an astonishing 4.4 million of the 18-49 demo. To put that in perspective, the series premiere of Breaking Bad received about 1.4 million viewers. Of course, 2008 was a very different time, and Saul certainly owes part of its success to the enduring popularity of BB. Astonishingly, some critics have already declared that Saul is better than Breaking Bad , and while it may be a little early for such jaw-dropping assessments (Did they already forget how amazing BB was?), with ratings like last night’s, Saul should have plenty of future seasons with which to make its case. Saul has already been renewed for a second season and its second episode debuts tonight at 10 pm on AMC. In the wake of a controversy over how he misled viewers regarding an incident in the Iraq War, the anchor announced on Saturday that he’s taking a leave of absence from his post. “In the midst of a career spent covering and consuming news, it has become painfully apparent to me that I am presently too much a part of the news, due to my actions,” Williams said via statement. He added: “As Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News, I have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days, and Lester Holt has kindly agreed to sit in for me to allow us to adequately deal with this issue. “Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us.” The scandal surrounding Williams began during a January 30 broadcast,, when he erroneously claimed his helicopter was hit by a grenade in March 2003 as he covered the Iraq War. Williams apologized on air last Wednesday. Since then, the network has opened an internal investigation into his coverage of the war and other major events, including Hurricane Katrina. GOP Congressman Says President Obama Refuses To Acknowledge Islamic Radicals Because He Was Muslim In School via Think Progress Six years into his presidency, the GOP’s obsession with President Obama’s adolescence continues unabated. The latest iteration comes via Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), who appeared on The Matt Murphy Show Tuesday morning, who invoked Obama’s childhood in Indonesia to explain why Obama is not using the term “radical Islam” to describe terrorism. Though birtherism may be all but dead in conservative circles, for the final two years of Obama’s presidency, new theories like this about Obama’s adolescent education may take its place. Murphy asked the Alabama congressman why Obama “refuses to clearly identify the enemy we’re fighting” as “radical Islam.” He then declared that “radical Islam” is “the nicest way you can put it. The only other way to put it is, it’s Islam generally.” Brooks agreed, offering a theory why Obama prefers not to use the term “radical Islam.” “It’s probably an unfortunate byproduct of the days when he was in a Muslim school being taught that Islam is a religion of peace,” he said. “And the president bought into it to such a degree that he does not seem to recognize that there are elements of Islam that are very violent.” As a result, he continued, “This president is exhibiting weakness and that is putting America at risk.” Brooks wrapped up by accusing Obama of employing “a policy that tends to encourage attacks on the United States of America rather than discourage them.”
The Internet’s latest viral video craze comes from group of students performing a full choreographed dance to Mark Ronson’s hit song “Uptown Funk.” Ronson’s track, featuring Bruno Mars’ vocals, has risen to the top of the charts. Now these Texas high school kids are taking it to the top of YouTube trends! Texas High School Uptown Funk Video Students at A. Maceo Smith New Tech H.S. in Dallas, along with theater teacher Scot Pankey, organized and shot the video earlier this month. So far, the video posted to YouTube on January 24 has garnered over 6.5 million page views. Writes Pankey of the clip that’s sweeping the nation: “This is a great example of how a bunch of [technology] students let go of their fears, trusted their teacher and got down to Uptown Funk!!!” “I heard the song before Christmas and fell in love with it. We are a project-based school,” he adds, so he gave them this as their assignment! “You put them in teams, and they have to come up with solutions. They had three weeks to work on it, then present as a group what they learned.” The video was shot by a student, walking backwards through hallways and up and down stairs as his classmates did their awesome thing. Even more impressively, it was shot in a single take. Mars shared the video on Twitter with the caption, “I cried at the end. I’m still a thug though. Thank you to everyone involved in making this video.” Indeed.
