‘Game Change’: The Reviews Are In!

Julianne Moore and Woody Harrelson carry HBO’s Sarah Palin-centered tale of the 2008 election, premiering at 9 p.m. Saturday. By Eric Ditzian Julianne Moore and Ed Harris in “Game Change” Photo: HBO Films Before I checked out “Game Change,” HBO’s Sarah Palin-focused retelling of the 2008 presidential election, I handed my screener over to a politically obsessed MTV News colleague. The next morning, he popped into my office and declared, “It was well-acted!” — which seemed like an odd way to lead off the conversation. I expected him to burst through my door, laughing about what a kook Palin is, or wondering why producers didn’t get Tina Fey to play the one-time vice presidential nominee, or waxing poetic about the “hopey, changey” circus that was Barack Obama’s romp through the general election. But, no: well-acted. When I stretched out on the couch for my own viewing a few days later, I finally grasped what my coworker was getting at: The performances in “Game Change” are what separate the film from fluffy caricature or partisan hackery into a compelling, if debatably accurate, piece of current event-tinged pop culture. Julianne Moore manages to present a Palin that transcends mimicry and leaves a viewer (or, at least, this viewer) vacillating between sympathy and exasperation. As chief John McCain campaign advisor Steve Schmidt, Woody Harrelson simply kicks ass, doling out sage advice and f-bomb-heavy attacks with equal aplomb — exactly how I imagine political insiders do it in real life (or, perhaps, just on “The West Wing”). Of the major players, only Ed Harris’ portrayal of McCain himself comes off as a little too much of an “SNL” imitation, his robotic physicality less reminiscent of the Arizona senator than of C-3PO. Nonetheless, all this combines to make “Game Change,” in the best tradition of historical dramas, a tense affair as you sit waiting to find out how it all will end, even as you know exactly what in fact transpired. That’s not to say this film is high art, or even particularly great: It’s not, and it isn’t. Problems abound — from hokey, no-one-honestly-utters-such-patriotic-nonsense dialogue to the enduring question about veracity — but in the end, “Game Change” is gripping throughout, because it’s “well-acted.” Many reviewers agree with that sentiment — though not all. Here’s what critics are saying about the HBO film, which premieres at 9 p.m. Saturday: The Performances “McCain comes off close to saintly, with Harris lending him a grave bafflement over Obama’s success. … Harrelson portrays Schmidt as a man who truly believes that all McCain needs to push him to victory is a little sizzle. … The film, obviously, belongs to Moore, who works hard to make Palin not so much fatally ambitious as one of those naturally confident people who believe that confidence and faith are the most important ingredients of success; ability or even competence can be learned on the job.” — Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times The Spin From the Right “Moore portrays Palin as a Manchurian Candidate for the extreme right who is activated by a phone call from the McCain campaign. Like a hypnotized spy, she’s humorless, incapable of any kind of emotional connection with anyone, bewildered by circumstance and absolutely determined to meet the goal she’s been programmed to complete. … [W]hat HBO and company have done is to bring to life that which justifies the darkest part of their own incapacity to see the humanity in those who might threaten the reelection of Barack Obama.” — John Nolte, Big Hollywood The Spin From the Left “Sarah Palin has everything to lose and precisely nothing to gain from depictions that point her, as ‘Game Change’ does at various point, as an overzealous evangelical Christian. … And those of us who dislike Palin have everything to gain by recognizing that we really, truly won: Palin’s gone from the national stage. … We should accept that, be done with the victory dance, and get down to examining the next generation of plausible Republican rising stars. The greatest damage we could do to Sarah Palin — and one of the better things we could do for ourselves — is to move on from her, totally and irrevocably.” — Alyssa Rosenberg, Think Progress The Final Word “[T]he movie is better than you’ve heard but not good enough to linger in the mind. I wish it had been more of a black comedy and less of a political-psychological case study. Confronted with this level of genial stupidity and accidental madness, only satire can do history justice. Sarah Palin herself is a triumph of style and a failure of substance; ‘Game Change,’ the reverse.” — Matt Zoller Seitz, New York ‘s Vulture.com For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Young Gingrich Supporter Explains Her Political Conversion

‘I don’t think that Barack Obama is really looking out for my interests as he said he would,’ 26-year-old law student tells MTV News. By Becca Frucht Newt Gingrich campaigns in Georgia Photo: Getty Images ATLANTA — When we showed up at the pseudo-ritzy Renaissance Hotel in suburban Atlanta last night for Newt Gingrich’s victory party — looking like a hot mess after 12 hours of Super Tuesday shenanigans at Georgia Tech and Georgia State — we were planning to chat with die-hard young Republicans who’d been reppin’ their party since they were in Reagan-themed diapers. And sure, there were plenty of GOP geeks in full Newt regalia spittin’ campaign lines like whoa — but then I met 26-year-old law student Kimberly Roholt and I learned there’s way more to Gingrich’s young voter base than many people think. That’s because Roholt is a civic convert. “Well, I actually voted for President Obama in the last election but I voted for Newt Gingrich today,” she told me. That is pretty much a full-on political 180. I clearly had to know more, so I asked her to explain her “transformation,” and she quickly pointed out that wasn’t exactly what happened: “I wouldn’t call it a transformation so much as a realization,” Roholt said. “I voted for Barack Obama last time. I was very hopeful. I gave a lot of credence to hope and change. However, I was very young and in the past few years since I’ve graduated, the economy’s difficult, getting jobs is difficult. I’m in law school, I’m living off student loans at the moment until I graduate and I’m very concerned about what the outlook is for me. And I don’t think that Barack Obama is really looking out for my interests as he said he would.” Ironically echoing the same sentiment of broken trust that fueled the liberal Occupy Wall Street movement, Roholt went on to detail how Obama’s failure to keep some of his campaign promises ultimately led to her Democratic defection: “So I switched to Newt Gingrich,” she said. “I think he’s extremely intelligent. While there are some things we differ on in some of our policies, I think he could lead this nation in the right direction, so I voted for him today.” When I pressed her to reveal where she disagreed with her new GOP BFF — asking if the differences were based in economic or social policies — she was understandably a bit reticent to talk cons on a night that was all about Newt’s comeback: “Social, not all of them and not greatly, but there are a few things that we differ socially on. Some of that might be generational, and some of it might be my own ideas,” she said. The question is: Are there more young people like Roholt who are kicking Obama to the curb after four years of recession, unemployment, rising tuition and jacked-up student loan payments? MTV had Super Tuesday covered, with reporters on the scene in Georgia, Ohio and Massachusetts! Stick with Power Of 12 throughout the presidential election season for more from the ground.

Some Bolitics Swirl: Sarah Palin Wants Black Republican Allen West To Be Considered For GOP VP Nomination

Hmmmm… Several high-powered names have been bandied about for a possible No. 2 on the GOP presidential ticket. Sarah Palin, the Republicans’ last VP nominee, on Saturday threw out a new one – Florida Rep. Allen West. “I would like to see considered for the VP Col. Allen West,” she told Fox News. “In this tumultuous time … he served in the military and has intimate knowledge of the way the military works and should work by having a close family member serve. Someone like that.” Palin isn’t ruling out another run herself on the ticket, should she be asked. “It is not a no. I’m not saying no. But what I am saying is if I were in a GOP presidential candidate’s shoes, I would look to Col. Allen West.” Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie are among the other names that have been floated as potential running mates. Palin, who has been consistently undecided about her favorite in the presidential race, on Saturday also said she would support Mitt Romney if he is the nominee. Despite lingering discontent in some corners of the party with Romney, he is still the clear delegate frontrunner. “Anybody but Obama. Mitt Romney’s proven himself as a businessman and as a governor. He’s been the CEO of the state and understands amendment and states’ rights that Barack Obama doesn’t understand.” Palin stopped short of an endorsement. She also praised Rick Santorum for his efforts to bridge the gap between conservatives and independents and union workers in Michigan. But, she had a message for all the candidates: “I think that observers of the GOP process do get tired of some of the pettiness that goes on in the campaigns.” Meanwhile, Palin told Fox News she has no plans to see the new HBO movie “Game Change,” which is based on the 2008 McCain-Palin campaign. The movie trailers depict the Palin character as unprepared. “I am not going to see the movie and neither is Senator John McCain. Hollywood lies are Hollywood lies,” Palin told Fox News. “They are going to do what they can to drum up their money and machine and that happens to be a pro-leftist, pro-Barack Obama.” This Allen West character is known to kick it with Sarah Palin’s former swirly chop down buddy Glen Rice so perhaps that’s why she wants him nominated! President Obama Calls Georgetown “Slut” To Console Her After Rush Limbaugh’s Birth-Control Diss

The POTUS got ya back boo. President Obama called Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke on Friday to offer her words of encouragement amid a controversy involving Rush Limbaugh’s words toward her. Obama called Fluke shortly before her appearance on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” Fluke said in a subsequent appearance on the program. “He encouraged me and supported me and thanked me for speaking out about the concerns of American women,” Fluke said in her description of the call. “What was really personal for me was that he said to tell my parents that they should be proud.” Fluke has become an unwitting figure in the middle of a political battle over access to contraception that has ensnared Washington in recent weeks. She favors increased access to contraception, and testified to that effect before a congressional panel assembled by Democrats. In reaction to Fluke’s testimony, Limbaugh said on his radio show that Fluke was a “slut,” because, by asking for access to birth control subsidized by an insurer, she was essentially asking to be paid for sex. Democrats have vocally criticized Limbaugh for the remark, and a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner labeled the conservative radio giant’s comments as “inappropriate.” There’s a political element to the battle over contraception and Fluke’s testimony. Democrats believe that they can highlight critics like Limbaugh and other Republicans to portray the GOP as out of touch, especially to women voters. Republicans, on the other hand, believe there is political traction in framing the battle in Washington as a fight against government encroachment on religion. (The origin of the battle stems from an Obama administration regulation that would have required employers, even if they have moral objections to it, to provide access to contraception as part of their health insurance policy for employees.)
