After a whirlwind press tour spent stymieing journalists in character as his General Aladeen of the Republic of Wadiya, Dictator comedian Sacha Baron Cohen sat with the BBC for a rare straight interview — no costume, no shenanigans , no spilling the ashes of late despots on unsuspecting talking heads. The result: An actually coherent, fascinating filmed chat with Cohen about toeing the line of sensitivity with his despotism comedy, why he almost never gives interviews as himself, and how he took inspiration from the “ludicrous” power-hungry dictators of the world. Cohen (who’s rather handsome when not in character!) spoke with BBC reporter Will Gompertz in Cannes, citing a few of his favorite dictators, so to speak: “I had always found Colonel Gaddafi hilarious, and I wanted to do a character that was inspired by him. I had all these other ludicrous characters like Türkmenbaşy, who was the president and dictator of Turkmenistan, who renamed the day Thursday and the word for bread after his mother. When the doctor told him to give up smoking, he banned smoking from the whole country because he didn’t want to be reminded of cigarettes. And then you had someone like Kim Jong-il who claimed to have hit nine holes in one in his first ever game of golf. And obviously Colonel Gaddafi who had these 30 virgin guards, dressed unintentionally like a 60-year-old woman and would often break wind when being interviewed for the BBC…” To read Movieline’s review of The Dictator , head here . He appeared on TODAY as his film’s character, Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen. He was interviewed by Matt Lauer. “By the way, how are your family? … How is your wife Annette?” he asked at the top of the interview. “What is she doing now?” “She’s probably watching this interview,” said Lauer. “Incorrect!” said Aladeen, pulling a swatch of brown locks from his pocket. “Is this her hair?” Fortunately, it was all an act. “The Dictator” opens May 16th.

The scandal that derailed John Edwards’ career, shattered his image as a devoted family man and led to his indictment is now set to play out in federal court. The former Democratic presidential candidate is fighting allegations that he violated federal campaign finance laws during his 2008 bid for the White House. Prosecutors contend he secretly obtained hundreds of thousands of dollars from two wealthy supporters to hide his affair and love child with Rielle Hunter . John Edwards Trial Begins Hunter, was a campaign videographer who gave birth to their daughter, Frances Quinn, at a time when Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth, was battling breast cancer. Elizabeth Edwards passed away in late 2010. The alleged donors were Fred Baron, a wealthy Texas lawyer who is no longer alive, and Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, a wealthy 101-year-old benefactor. They supposedly provided more than $900,000 in living expenses for Rielle Hunter, who is not expected to testify at the trial of the ex-U.S. Senator. Prosecutors argue the money should have been reported as campaign funds because it was meant to help Edwards preserve and protect his image. As Edwards’ family watched from the courtroom in Greensboro, N.C., 100 men and women were given a brief review of the jury selection process. The case seems as much made for celebrity gossip tabloids as it is for legal scholars studying the reach of federal regulations governing elections. Whether or not Edwards can win it is an entirely open question.

‘I definitely did not know that he was going to do that,’ Seacrest said on his radio show on Monday. By Gil Kaufman Ryan Seacrest and Sacha Baron Cohen at the Oscars on Sunday Photo: E! Entertainment Who better to try to flap than the unflappable Ryan Seacrest? If he could put up with Simon Cowell’s constant attacks for nearly a decade, surely the ‘Crest could handle a sneak attack from the Dictator. And, true to his laser-focus reputation, when Sacha Baron Cohen ‘s Dictator ash-bombed Seacrest on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night, the “American Idol” host kept his composure. After all, he had to know that SBC was not just going to show up in costume, but was very likely going to create one of his infamous scenes to drive up some hype for his upcoming tyrant spoof . “I was surprised, but not surprised. I definitely did not know that he was going to do that,” Seacrest said on Monday morning (February 27) on his radio show, “On Air With Ryan Seacrest,” about his surprise when Cohen “accidentally” spilled an urn filled with the purported ashes of late North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il on the TV presenter’s tux. “He comes over and I asked him a couple of questions but … you know that feeling in your gut.” Knowing that Cohen was not going to let him off that easy, Seacrest said in the back of his mind he kept thinking, “This guy isn’t coming as the Dictator to not do something … you know in your gut, you feel like, ‘This is going too normally.’ ” And then when he saw the urn come out, Seacrest could see something coming. “It was getting closer to my chest and then it tipped over. And it wasn’t the wind. He spilt it on my tuxedo.” Did we mention Seacrest is hard to rattle? The consummate professional didn’t flinch because he smartly followed the advice his mother, Connie, gave him long ago when he was just a wee wannabe presenter: ” ‘You always want to have two jackets. You never know what’s going to happen. You never know what you’re going to spill on yourself and you want to be red carpet-ready at all times. That’s your job.’ So I had another jacket.” Seacrest had a great attitude about the gag, which drew a thumbs-up from some of the other celebs MTV News talked to at Elton John’s annual Oscar-viewing party and charity gala.
