Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Welcomes Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Beastie Boys were also inducted on a night when Guns singer Axl Rose refused to attend. By Gil Kaufman Former Guns N’ Roses members Matt Sorum, Duff McKagan, Slash and Steven Adler attend the 2012 Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony Photo: Getty Images If it’s the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, then drama is as much a prerequisite as loud guitars, receding hairlines and a night-ending all-star jam on a golden oldie. Saturday night’s 27th edition was no exception according to reports, with as much intrigue as a telenovela, as well as some genuinely peaceful Southern California bro-downage, irreverent induction speeches and fresh spots in the Hall for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, The Faces, Freddie King, Laura Nyro and Guns N’ Roses . The spotlight, of course, was on the famously fractured band of battling former brothers in GNR. Lead singer and sole remaining original member Axl Rose loudly decried the institution in a scathing letter
earlier in the week, saying he would not attend and intimating that anyone who did was a fraud. That was just fine for former guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan, who made the most of the honor, while, ahem, never once mentioning Rose. “I don’t know that it matters who’s here tonight, because it’s about the music that these bands played,” said McKagan, who jammed a short time later on three songs with a pseudo-GNR made up of Slash, former Guns guitarist Gilby Clarke and drummers Steven Adler and Matt Sorum and Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy. It was the first time in nearly 20 years that Slash, McKagan and Adler had performed together and according to reports there were little signs of rust on the classics “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City.” In his induction speech at the Cleveland ceremony, Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong dubbed Guns’ 1987 album, Appetite for Destruction , “the best debut album in the history of rock and roll … every song hits hard. It takes you ion a trip to the seedy world of Los Angeles. The thing that set them apart from everyone else was guts.” And after ticking off the strengths of all the members of the group, he cheekily added, “Let’s see, who am I missing?” The latter set off yet another chorus of four-letter catcalls from the 7,400 in attendance, which inspired Armstrong to add, “Shut up. He [Rose] was the greatest frontman to ever step in front of a microphone.” Rose wasn’t the only star missing. Rod Stewart was not on hand to celebrate with the Faces/Small Faces because he was reportedly sick with the flu and Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch was absent because of ongoing recovery from cancer treatment. B Boys member Mike D made up for it, giving a shout-out to the trio’s hometown for inspiration. “Thank you, New York City, for basically raising us and giving us all the music we love and grew up on,” said D, who was on hand along with bandmate Ad-Rock to celebrate becoming only the third hip-hop act in the Hall. During a later performance, Kid Rock, Travie McCoy and the Roots’ Black Thought joined the duo for a medley of their classics, including “Sabotage.” Also inducted were Donovan, blues guitarist Freddie King, Laura Nyro, music exec Don Kirshner and a number of sidemen and backup musicians. Accepting their award from comedian Chris Rock, Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis said it felt a bit weird to join such a hallowed hall when his band is still out on the road promoting new music. “We’re going somewhere,” he said. “How can we stop and take an award when really we’re just halfway there?” The Peppers later performed with a triple-drummer line-up that included two former skins pounders, Jack Irons and Cliff Martinez. The five-plus hour ceremony will be boiled down to a two-and-a-half hour special for a May 5 HBO broadcast. Related Artists Guns N’ Roses Red Hot Chili Peppers Beastie Boys

Jack White Drops New Song, ‘Love Interruption’

Track is from White’s first solo album, Blunderbuss, due April 24. By James Montgomery Jack White Photo: WireImage Jack White hasn’t exactly been living life outside the public eye since announcing the end of the White Stripes last year, making records with everyone from Tom Jones to the Insane Clown Posse and appearing on (a really pretty excellent) episode of “American Pickers,” to name just a few of his endeavors. And on April 24, he’ll officially add “solo artist” to that r

Rick Ross Calls Time With Dr. Dre ‘Inspirational’

‘The advice he gave me, it’s already affected the way I’ve been in the studio,’ the Bawse tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Rick Ross and Dr. Dre Photo: MTV News There is no rap producer more revered than Dr. Dre . From N.W.A and Snoop Dogg to Eminem and 50 Cent, the legendary hip-hop producer has jump-started the careers of some of the game’s greatest artists. In addition to cultivating new talent in the studio, he has also crafted hits with heavyweights like Jay-Z, Nas and Tupac. And next up is the Bawse. On January 25, Rick Ross tweeted a picture of himself in the studio with DJ Khaled and Dre; while Rozay wouldn’t say exactly what the trio was working on, it’s clear that Dre had a profound impact. “It was amazing, my brother,” Ross told MTV News’ Sway in Miami over the weekend. “We had the opportunity to just first and foremost touch base like bosses. We went out, we had dinner, we just discussed ideas and that led to the studio.” The ever-calculating Ross didn’t want to let the cat out of the bag just yet, but working with Dre has already changed his work habits, he said. “The advice he gave me, it’s already affected the way I’ve been in the studio for the last week,” Rozay said. “So let’s just say he’s full of knowledge and he’s a solid guy. Most definitely that’s maybe my biggest hip-hop influence in the game.” Before Ross became a marquee rap name, he was a fan. He often cites Slick Rick and the Beastie Boys as early influences, and of course Dre is part of that set. “A lot of times when you sit back and you watchin’ greatness in motion, when I think back to [N.W.A’s] Straight Outta Compton or [Snoop Dogg’s] Doggystyle and I think about the smallest things from the skits to the way the records ended to having the opportunity to ask him about certain things about those classic albums,” Ross said of his interaction with the Chronic mastermind, “to just hear the time that was put into it, and the format, it was really priceless knowledge. For him to acknowledge Maybach Music and what I’m doin’ as an artist and a CEO, that was just real inspirational.” Related Artists Rick Ross Dr. Dre

Jay-Z, Kanye West Sued Over Watch The Throne Sample

Soul legend Syl Johnson claims duo used 1967 hit without permission. By Gil Kaufman Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Jay-Z and Kanye West have been sued by soul/blues icon Syl Johnson over allegations that they sampled one of his songs on their Watch the Throne album without permission. The complaint, filed in Illinois federal court Friday, alleges that the dynamic duo sampled a portion of his 1967 hit “Different Strokes” on the Throne deluxe-edition song “The Joy,” according to the Hollywood Reporter . Johnson claims the song was sampled without his permission and has was not credited in the album’s liner notes. The allegation of copyright infringement was first raised in late August, when archival record label and publisher the Numero Uno Group — which was erroneously credited as the song’s publisher in the Throne — threatened a lawsuit on Johnson’s behalf. The suit further claims West originally attempted to sample the tune on his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy solo album, but was unable to get clearance in time to use it. Given that history, the suit alleges West’s decision to use the sample on another album without permission is an example of “knowing” and “willful” misappropriation. The funky blues song has long been a favorite among rappers, including the Wu-Tang Clan (“Shame on a N—a”), Public Enemy (“Fight the Power”), the Beastie Boys (“Desperado”), the Geto Boys (“Homie Don’t Play That”) and Kool G Rap (“Talk Like Sex”) — and Johnson has not shied away from suing other hip-hop acts in the past to get paid for the use of his music. The suit seeks to impound all the copies of Throne and requests a full accounting of sale and publishing money, along with punitive damages. A spokesperson for the Throne could not be reached for comment at press time. Related Artists Kanye West Jay-Z

Beastie Boys’ ‘Make Some Noise’: A VMA Cheat Sheet

Video of the Year nominee is packed with characters from the Beasties’ past. By James Montgomery Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride in the Beastie Boy’s “Make Some Noise” video Photo: Capitol If they’ve been anything over the course of their near-30-year career, the Beastie Boys have always been thorough, the kind of band that derives some sort of perverse pleasure from peppering their music with a sundry of pop-culture references, inside jokes and exhaustively sought, expertly placed samples. And because of that, they’ve managed to create their own rather insular world, the kind of place where Mantan Moreland hangs out with Ted Danson, where Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks” rubs elbows with Les Baxter’s “Prelude in C# Minor.” And luckily for all of us, each time they release an album, they pull the curtain back slightly, and invite us in for a drink. So it’s fitting that their “Make Some Noise” clip (which is up for Video of the Year at this Sunday’s VMAs) may very well be the most thorough thing they’ve ever done: a glorious, goofy thing that’s packed with references to their past, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it jokes and more celebrity cameos than Michael Jackson’s “Liberian Girl.” To wit, it’s certainly the only Video of the Year nominee to have begun life as a 30-minute mini-movie, and it’s the kind of thing that requires repeat viewings to thoroughly enjoy — which, given everything the Beasties packed into it (and the three-decade lead-up to its creation) is sort of the point, really. Back in April, immediately following its premiere (as a short film called “Fight for Your Right Revisited” ), we compiled an annotated guide to the galaxy of stars who make cameos — a list that includes everyone from Susan Sarandon to Danny Masterson — and the sly references that you might have missed. But now, with the VMAs right around the corner, we’ve gone back and watched “Make Some Noise” again, and boy, are we amazed at the amount of stuff we didn’t catch the first time through. Then again, such is the beauty of the video (and the Beastie Boys for that matter): They’re always willing to go the extra mile, with delightfully ridiculous results. Here now are even more moments from “Make Some Noise,” a video that takes a look back at the B-Boys’ rather glorious past, and one that, if anything, is definitely thorough. George Drakoulias Greek music producer/pal of early Beasties’ collaborator Rick Rubin, Drakoulias was immortalized in a line on the Paul’s Boutique track “Stop That Train” (“Bought a hot dog from who? George Drakoulias”). Fittingly, Drak shows up in “Make Some Noise,” selling Danny McBride’s MCA a street dog. Of course, in typical Beastie fashion, the role is actually played by actor Clint Caluory, and he’s officially credited as “Clint as Zach Galifianakis as George Drakoulias.” “Hey Ladies” Paul’s Boutique single that is consistently referenced in the “Make Some Noise” clip, particularly in the limo scene, where driver Will Ferrell sports a gold tooth (a reference to the line “She’s got a gold tooth, you know she’s hard-core”) and bangs on a cowbell (just like the song). The whole thing concludes with the Beasties getting booted from the backseat, just like the line “She’ll show you a good time, then she’ll show you the door.” All that’s missing is a cameo by Sadaharu Oh. “Hold It, Now Hit It” Single from the License to Ill era, it’s also referenced during the limo scene, when Mike D (or, you know, Seth Rogen) asks for some LSD-laced breath drops with the line “Pass that over here man, all right!” which, as any Beasties aficionado will tell you, is the same phrase uttered in the song. Johnny Ryall Titular star of the Paul’s Boutique track, he’s a homeless man with a rockabilly past and bread-bag shoes. In “Make Some Noise,” he’s played by actor Orlando Bloom, and while the big O isn’t rocking Wonder Bread slip-ons (or hand-me-down Pumas), he does sport a rather nice Def Jam windbreaker. Also displays impressive window-washing skills. “Shake Your Rump” Second track on Paul’s Boutique (and, in a lot of ways, the album’s official kickoff), it’s also referenced in the “Make Some Noise” limo scene, when MCA takes a rip off a nitrous-filled balloon, a nod to the line “In the back of the ride and bust with the whippit .” “She’s Crafty” Snotty License to Ill track on which the Beasties paid homage to several down-and-dirty females, including one who manages to rob them of all their possessions, including a mirror, a TV, a remote control and a skateboard. In a sublimely meta “Make Some Noise” moment, the Boys return the favor, swiping the skateboard back from a girl played by Adam Yauch’s real life daughter. Sir Stewart Wallace International man of mystery portrayed by Yauch in the Beasties’ epochal “Sabotage” video, Wallace shows up for just a second in “Make Some Noise,” piling out of the back of a cab and dropping his briefcase (which appears to be filled with bricks of cocaine) in the process. But this time around, it’s artist/director Mike Mills who steps into Sir Stew’s eternally pressed suit. What did we miss? Let us know in the comments!
