REVIEW: Saoirse Ronan is Nifty New Action Heroine in Hanna

Who would ever have thought that Robert Ludlum would have become the father of modern action cinema? The ruthless 2002 film adaptation of his novel The Bourne Identity — with the hero trying to figure who or what he (or she is), while amassing a body count that warrants coverage on CNN — is now the genre standard, and in this year alone, we’ve seen a number of variations on that theme. The most recent is director Joe Wright’s efficient and soulful Hanna , in which the title character (played by Saorise Ronan), a pale-skinned teenager with matching sandalwood hair and eyebrows, has mastered the art of contained chaos.

Penelope Cruz, who will be starring in yet another Woody Allen film , thanked the director during her 2009 Oscar acceptance speech for creating a number of great roles for women. She could’ve thanked him for creating great roles for a certain type of star: the thinking, compulsively relatable thespian who can balance with sophisticated ease with exasperation. Here are nine who deserve a spot in Woody Allen’s magnificent oeuvre.

Eminem, Lil Wayne’s Bonnaroo Gig Continues Hip-Hop’s Long Festival History

From early Lollapalooza to this year’s Coachella, hip-hop has always had a place at major U.S. music gatherings. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage American music fans had to chuckle back in 2008, when former Oasis co-founder Noel Gallagher raised a giant stink about Jay-Z headlining the venerable Glastonbury Festival. Honestly? Hip-hop doesn’t belong at big festivals? C’mon, Noel. Well, we’ll see how much water that big cup of righteous indignation holds in the next few days as fans of Tennessee’s Bonnaroo Festival weigh in on the news that not one, but two hip-hop legends — Eminem and Lil Wayne — will top a bill that features a dozen other rappers sprinkled in among the usual cadre of jam-friendly acts indie faves and the usual classic rock big fish. While Bonnaroo’s organizers have long shunned the “jam-band” festival tag, the annual steamy gathering on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, has hosted its fair share of noodle-tastic talent over the years. But with the booking of arguably two of the three biggest live hip-hop draws on the planet (the third, Jay-Z, played there last year ), clearly the ‘Roo is going all-in on rap in 2011. Further down the list, this year’s fest will also have sets from Atmosphere, Wiz Khalifa and Chiddy Bang. But from its very first lineup, Bonnaroo has supported rap, booking such indie groups as Blackalicious and Jurassic 5, adding in more over the years, mostly of the variety that appeal to its core audience, including RJD2, frequent guests the Roots, Common, Cypress Hill, El-P and Aesop Rock, and in 2008, Kanye West, M.I.A. and Lupe Fiasco. Though they’ve always had a place on the bill, rappers began to have a bigger presence by 2009, with the addition of Murs, the Knux, the Beastie Boys and Snoop Dogg. Then again, in 2010, even with Jay on the roster, last year’s lineup had rappers in mostly support roles, with Wale, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Jay Electronica, Kid Cudi and B.o.B hitting smaller stages. With a few exceptions, that’s been the norm at the country’s major festivals: many of the same hip-hop stars playing on the main stage, with a predictable roster of up-and-coming and established hipster acts on the side stages, though never a critical mass of either outside of purely rap-oriented events. Hip-hop has long had a headline and side stage presence at Lollapalooza with 1991’s inaugural outing featuring Ice T & Body Count, followed by Ice Cube, Basehead, Cypress Hill, House of Pain and Boo-Ya T.R.I.B.E. (1992), Arrested Development, Rage Against the Machine (1993), Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Fu-Schnickens and Pharcyde (1994) and Cypress Hill, Coolio, Pharcyde and the Roots (1995). In later years, the festival invited Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg and Jurassic 5 before taking a hiatus. When it returned in 2005, there was a modest slate of hip-hop, but by 2006, the list grew to include Common, Kanye, Lady Sovereign, Lyrics Born and Blackalicious. In the years since, the granddaddy of alt festivals in the U.S. has hosted Lupe Fiasco, the Roots, Rhymefest, Kid Sister, K’naan, Snoop, B.o.B. and (again) Cyprus Hill. The reported roster for Lollapalooza in 2011 also features a headlining set from Eminem. Since 1999, the third big daddy American festival, California’s Coachella gathering has followed a similar path by working in college-friendly acts like Rahzel, Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike, Kool Keith and Kid Koala into a dance- and indie-based talent lineup. It too has tapped a familiar group over the years, including: Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Gangstarr, Mos Def, Jurassic 5, KRS-One, Pharcyde, Dilated Peoples, Beastie Boys, N.E.R.D., Mr. Lif, Eyedea and Abilities, Danger Mouse, Sage Francis, Jean Grae, k-os, Black Star, Kanye, Lyrics Born, Ghostface Killah, Diplo, N.A.S.A., and in 2010, Jay-Z, Street Sweeper Social Club, Die Antwoord, Major Lazer and the Glitch Mob. This year’s Coachella will feature a thinner rap selection, including Lauryn Hill, Duck Sauce, Kanye, Nas & Damian Marley and Wiz Khalifa. Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Wants To Drop Hot Sauce This Fall

MCA is on the mend after cancer treatment, but the group may ‘reevaluate’ new album. By Gil Kaufman Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Photo: Mark Von Holden/ Getty Images After being diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland last summer, the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch is on the mend and thinking about music again. The MC, who underwent surgery and treatment in the fall, told Entertainment Weekly that he’s ready to get back to work. “I feel better,” Yauch said on Friday at the Independent Spirit Awards in Los Angeles. “It was touch and go there for a while, but I am finally getting my energy back.” Yauch announced on July 20 that the discovery of the cancer would necessitate the canceling of all of the Beasties’ planned summer-festival appearances and push back their new album, Hot Sauce Committee, Part One, while he underwent treatment. According to a band spokesperson, because the cancer was discovered early and localized in an area that does not affect Yauch’s vocal cords, it is believed the surgery was successful. While a the album, originally due out last September, is not yet officially rescheduled, Yauch said he expects it to drop this September. “It was really disappointing to have to hold the record and postpone the tour, but doctor’s orders,” he told EW. “We may or may not [release the album], depending on how my health is come September. We want to but we have to play it by ear.” Either way, the B-Boys are planning on taking another listen to the tracks they had prepped to see if some tweaking is in order. “I was just talking to Adam [Horovitz] and Mike [D] today on the phone and we were talking about working on it a bit,” Yauch said. “We finished the record over a year ago, so we want to take a look at it and reevaluate and make sure it is what we want to put out there and that we are still happy with it. I don’t think we will change it up too much.” A spokesperson for the group could not be reached at press time to confirm a new release date. Related Artists Beastie Boys

Travis Barker Gets RZA, Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, More On Solo Album

‘It’s a live record — we were in a room together where everything was live,’ he says of collaboration with Wu-Tang’s RZA. By Kyle Anderson Travis Barker Photo: MTV News Travis Barker is a busy man. He just announced his new collaboration with DJ A-Trak ( a tour that will kick off in Hollywood on March 9 ), a new Blink-182 album is on the horizon and he has his ongoing session and remix work. But his most immediate project is a long-in-the-works solo album . Barker told MTV News back in November that he wanted to have the album out “in January or February,” and though he’s blown that deadline, the next one is set in stone. “We just got a new date for June,” Barker said. “That’s when I have to turn it in. It can’t change, it can’t move — that’s the time!” The yet-untitled album promises to be a collection that leaps across genres and features a who’s who of musical luminaries, including Slash, Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington and the aforementioned A-Trak. More recently he scored himself collaborations with Wu-Tang Clan mastermind RZA and Slipknot singer Corey Taylor (though not on the same track). Barker says the track that features Taylor on guitar and vocals is “on the heavier side — not as heavy as Slipknot, but heavier than any rock stuff I’ve done. We recorded the whole thing in an hour or two.” As for his team-up with RZA, it allowed the rapper/producer to spread his wings a bit. “RZA plays guitar on the track that will be on my record,” Barker says. “It’s a live record — we were in a room together where everything was live. It reminds me of old Beastie Boys, like Check Your Head when they all started playing instruments again.” In the meantime, fans itching for Barker’s work will soon be able to enjoy his remix of Snoop Dogg’s hit “I Wanna Rock.” “It’s done,” Barker said. “I hope people like it.”
