Bad Meets Evil Producers Tease ‘Top-Secret’ Eminem/ Royce Da 5’9" EP

‘The album is dope. That’s all I can tell you about it,’ Denaun Porter tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Eminem and Royce Da 5′ 9″ Photo: Courtesy of Tim Westwood Behind the Beats: Denaun Porter, Havoc, DJ Khalil and Bangladesh Eminem is looking to thrill hip-hop fans once again. Earlier this week, it was announced that Shady Records will release a joint EP featuring Em himself and fellow Detroit lyricist Royce Da 5’9″, under the group moniker Bad Meets Evil. But fans aren’t the only ones excited about the upcoming project. Producers Denaun Porter, Mobb Deep’s Havoc, DJ Khalil and Bangladesh have all been tapped to provide beats for the project and seem to be pretty pumped for the final product, which is set to drop June 14. “The album is dope. That’s all I can tell you about it,” said Porter when Mixtape Daily caught up with him at his Detroit studio. (Big Mixtape shout-out to photographer Patrick Daly.) The idea for a Bad Meets Evil EP first came about while Porter and Royce were working on Royce’s solo album. “We had one song and it turned into, ‘Yo, what do you think about getting Em on this record?’ ” Denuan recalled. Soon, Royce and Em were bouncing ideas back and forth, and more producers were eventually brought into the fold. Havoc, who also worked on Eminem’s Recovery, submitted a number of tracks to the Shady camp, but initially had no idea what Em and Royce were cooking up. “A couple of months ago I got hit up and they told me that they’re using another track for some future project,” he said. “So I found out along with everybody else what it was actually for, because they like to keep things top-secret.” West Coast beatsmith DJ Khalil has been a longtime fan of the Bad Meets Evil duo and has fond memories of buying Em and Royce’s first collaborative 1999 single, “Nothin’ to Do.” “I remember buying the 12-inch back in the day when I was DJ’in’,” he said. “It’s like a classic; I still have the vinyl.” Bangladesh , like Havoc, didn’t learn that he was going to be on the EP until recently. “I ain’t know that [Eminem] even had this beat, I didn’t even know he liked the beat. I ain’t know I was gonna be on this EP until probably like two weeks ago.” The producers couldn’t say much in terms of song detail, but Bangladesh did confirm that his track has a vocal sample in the hook, while Havoc said his beat has an eerie feel and sounds like, “You’re going down a dark hall with a whole bunch of monks just screamin’ at you.” Denuan, an original member of D12 and a longtime friend and collaborator of both Em and Royce, is perhaps the most thrilled about the upcoming Bad Meets Evil project. “I was happy to see it because I thought the songs that they did back in the day was dope.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Reese Witherspoon Says Kissing Sick Robert Pattinson ‘Wasn’t Pleasant’

‘Water for Elephants’ actress reveals, ‘He did have a very runny nose.’ By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Reese Witherspoon Photo: MTV News On camera, the love scenes between Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson in their period drama “Water for Elephants” — which opens in theaters Friday (April 22) — look glamorous and romantic. Behind the scenes, however, it was anything but. Never mind that both stars were involved in relationships during the filming of the big-screen adaptation ( Witherspoon with her now-husband, Jim Toth , and Pattinson with speculated girlfriend Kristen Stewart ) but the 24-year-old actor also happened to be fighting a nasty cold. As the “Twilight” hunk revealed during his “MTV First: Robert Pattinson” special, “The love scene in [‘Water for Elephants’]: I was doing it when I had a really bad cold.” He went on to divulge, “My nose is running all over the place, and it was in one of the additional photography scenes, and Reese had this wig on, and literally, I was wiping my nose on her wig.” And when his Oscar-winning co-star sat down with us , she confirmed it was just as unsavory as he described. “He did have a very runny nose, yeah,” she recalled, adding, “It wasn’t appealing; it wasn’t pleasant.” Still, the 35-year-old actress knows that even a runny nose wouldn’t deter Pattinson’s most fervent fans. Her advice for anyone planning on getting close to RPattz on or off camera: “Bring a Sudafed!” However, when Witherspoon isn’t dispensing advice on how to get through a love scene with RPattz, she’s enjoying domestic bliss with her husband. In fact, the newlyweds have been finding themselves in the same situation as many couples: compromising what shows to watch on television. The actress said that while she’s had to watch the biker drama series against her will, she’s now turned into “a big fan.” But, there was no need to convince the star to watch “Eastbound and Down,” the soon-to-be-retired HBO comedy starring Danny McBride. ” ‘Eastbound and Down’ makes me laugh,” Witherspoon told MTV News. “You gotta love Kenny Powers.” Would you want to make out with Robert Pattinson even if he had a cold? The Black Eyed Peas Recall Prince’s ‘I Gotta Feeling’ Praise

‘Those songs don’t come all the time,’ will.i.am remembers the Purple One telling him. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway will.i.am performs with the Black Eyed Peas at Terminal 5 in New York City Photo: MTV News In 2009, the Black Eyed Peas found incredible success with their feel-good party track “I Gotta Feeling.” It was a multicultural club banger that was all about being with your pals and embracing those moments of pure party joy. Now, it’s become a staple of their live show , and frontman will.i.am was surprised to learn about one of the song’s biggest fans. “I remember we played the song in Minnesota, and Prince was at the show, and he called me on the phone afterwards. He said, ‘Congratulations,’ ” will.i.am recalled. “He says, ‘You know, those songs don’t come all the time. You’re blessed to have one of those songs. You know, they’re gifts.’ I was like, ‘Wow.’ For someone like Prince to tell you that, that’s bigger than a Grammy for me.” Night after night, the song gets an incredible response from fans. “When we perform it, in my mind, like, ‘Where did that song come from?’ I can’t believe this is us and look at all these people singing it like it’s theirs,” he told MTV News when we caught up with the group at Terminal 5 in New York, where they were taping a show set to air Friday night (April 22) at midnight ET on MTV. “Wow, that’s a beautiful thing.” That song came just at the right time, since the band was looking for a way to update their concerts. “We used to do ‘Let’s Get It Started’ at the end, because that was our big finale, which didn’t really make sense. And for a while, [we did] ‘My Humps’ and then it got to the point where we didn’t want to play ‘My Humps’ no more. You know, ’cause ‘I met a girl down at the disco,’ I just didn’t want to say that no more, lyrically. “It wasn’t like my best lyrically, but it was fun,” he continued. “It wasn’t lyrical miracles, but the beat was rocking, so we throw the beat in there and just let the beat linger, but now ‘I Gotta Feeling’ is like ‘What?’ ” Don’t miss the Black Eyed Peas’ performance Friday at midnight ET on MTV.

The Black Eyed Peas Talk will.i.am’s Dancing Skills

Group laughs off frontman’s lack of onstage moves. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway The Black Eyed Peas Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images While will.i.am used to cut a rug, these days, when he and the rest of the Black Eyed Peas hit the stage, will’s dancing skills are noticeably absent from the show, which usually includes a slew of other eye-catching props like over-the-top costumes and lasers. “I’m the only one dancing now,” apl.de.ap laughed to MTV News when we caught up with the group at Terminal 5 in New York, where they were taping a show set to air Friday at midnight ET on MTV . But will.i.am has a good reason for his recent lack of dancing: competition with himself. “I like to allow the old me to have the crown somewhere, because me versus the old me — I’m a better businessman now than when I was 22, I’m a better producer than I was when I was 23, so I got to let the old me beat me somewhere,” will.i.am said. Fergie, meanwhile, had this explanation: “The pants got tighter.” The MTV special might not show off too much of will’s dancing, but it will feature some of the group’s biggest hits. “Before we had ‘I Gotta Feeling,’ it was like, ‘We know we gotta play “Pump It” and “Let’s Get It Started,” ‘ ” will.i.am explained. “We used to do ‘Let’s Get It Started’ at the end, because that was our big finale, which didn’t really make sense. And for a while, [we did] ‘My Humps’ and then it got to the point where we didn’t want to play ‘My Humps’ no more. Black Eyed Peas Go For ‘Old-School Club Vibe’ At NYC Gig

Performance airs Thursday at midnight ET on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Fergie performs with the Black Eyed Peas at Terminal 5 in New York City Photo: MTV News The Black Eyed Peas are known for their over-the-top stage show, which includes fashions made from Legos or lasers and usually includes a very high production value. So when the group hit up the smaller Terminal 5 in New York City to tape a show, they decided they would focus on the music and not the antics. “Old-school club vibe, intimate, spontaneous,” Fergie explained of the gig, which will air Thursday at midnight ET on MTV. Her bandmate, Taboo, added that with such an extensive repertoire of tunes, “It’s hard choosing, but you know the ones,” he told MTV News before BEP took the stage for the high-octane performance. The band’s unspoken leader, will.i.am, said that every time they release a new track that explodes and becomes an undeniable radio staple (which for this group happens often), they have to adjust their live show to go with the flow of their evolution as a group. Nicki Minaj Says Drake Was Her ‘First Choice’ For ‘Moment 4 Life’

MC explains the fairytale arc of her Drake-assisted video to MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj already has a reputation for pulling off shocking outfits and spitting even more insane stuff on her records. However, her latest video, “Moment 4 Life,” may surprise some of her die-hard fans, as Minaj swaps her edgy costumes for graceful, ladylike looks and runs off with her Prince Charming — in this case, it’s Young Money bestie Drake — and gets married under a firework display. Shortly after the premiere of the video on MTV on Thursday evening, Minaj sat down with MTV News’ Sway and explained the development of the fairytale narrative and said that catching her fans off guard is just what she was looking for. “I definitely went back and forth with [director] Chris [Robinson] a lot. I just wanted it to be something a little bit unexpected,” she said. Minaj added she initially had a more bottle-poppin’ vibe in mind, which was eventually replaced by the romantic story line. “First I wanted it to be like, really just a celebration and a party,” she admitted. “But I had the idea of making it more of a romance. Chris just sort of took those little bits and pieces and ran with it, and then it became sort of this big Cinderella thing.” The concept of the video may have evolved over time, but Minaj said that her first choice to jump on the track was always Drizzy, who provided her with the instrumental. “Drake came to the studio one night and he brought me a whole bunch of beats when I was wrapping up the [ Pink Friday ] album. This ‘Moment 4 Life’ was one of the beats, and he was like, ‘Just do whatever. Whatever you pick, I’m just gonna rock with you.’ I had the beat for a while, maybe, like, over a month, and I was just sitting on it — pause — and next thing you know, I was shooting [the video for] ‘Right Thru Me’ and I played this beat for everybody in my dressing room, and I was like, ‘Do you like this beat?’ Everybody said, ‘Yeah.’ And I just went to the studio the next day, and I laid the hook and I sent it to Drake and I didn’t know if he was gonna like it, blah blah blah, and he was like, ‘I love it.’ ” Drizzy mused that their parallel journeys as budding hip-pop superstars made the inspirational track a perfect fit. “He was like, ‘It makes sense for me and you.’ We both are at a place right now that we feel like we wish we could have this moment for life,” she recalled. “We don’t know what’s gonna happen next year, but this moment feels amazing. He was obviously my first choice to be on it.” What do you think of Nicki and Drake in “Moment 4 Life”? Let us know in the comments! Diplomats Talk Kanye West’s ‘Christmas In Harlem’

Dipset’s Jim Jones tells MTV News carol collabo with Chicago MC makes sense given the title: ‘If I was Kanye I would’ve called us too.’ By Hillary Crosley Kanye West Photo: Ben Hider/Getty Images On Thursday, Kanye West released the festive song “Christmas In Harlem” featuring CyHi The Prynce and Teyana Taylor with a local twist. Harlemites and Diplomat members Cam’ron, Jim Jones and Vado joined in on the carol along with Musiq and G.O.O.D. Music MCs Pusha T and Big Sean. (Taylor also hails from Uptown.) “I didn’t know nothing about it, I’m just getting hip to that right now but it’s simple though,” Jim Jones told MTV News when asked how the track came together. “Sh–, if I was Kanye I would’ve called us too. It don’t make sense if they from Chicago, they would’ve made ‘Christmas in Chicago’ then right?” The Dips began releasing Yuletide tracks like “Ballin’ on Christmas” in 2006 off their A Dipset X-Mas LP. As for collaborating with West on the Hit-Boy-produced holiday track, Jones said fans can thank Cam’ron. “Cam called me, sent me the beat, I did my part, sent it back to Cam and he took care of the rest of the business,” Jimmy said. And while the collaboration is a treat for rap fans’ digital Christmas stockings, it does bring up the most recent rift between Cam’ron and Kanye. In September, Cam’ron and Jones remixed West’s “Runaway” and Cam spit the following lyrics: “And Kanye, you a sucka n—a, dissed Dame so my attitude is f— the n—a/ Sucked off Jigga, how you gonna live with that?/ Took the beat, now come get it back.” “I couldn’t tell you what that was about but I know Cam and Don C are like best friends,” Jimmy said of the Dipset leader’s relationship with one of Kanye’s managers. “We’ve actually known Kanye and them for over 10 years from some of our earlier shows when we first got into the music industry so we have a great rapport with them more than anything else. “I don’t think people took what we did so serious more than it was [just the] art of the music that we do,” he continued. “I guess Cam had something on his mind but it wasn’t really a life-or-death situation. And I know Kanye’s a very smart person, he’s got a great spirit, so it’s great that he chose to look past anything that was going on. I appreciate it.” Related Artists Kanye West Jim Jones The Diplomats
