Seven Psychopaths Filmmaker Martin McDonagh Hopes To Revisit Musical With Tom Waits

One of my favorite movies to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival was Seven Psychopaths , which was written and directed by Irish playwright-turned-filmmaker Martin McDonagh .  Beginning in the mid-1990s, McDonagh caused quite a stir in New York’s theater world with his funny, macabre plays,  The Beauty Queen of Leenane ,  A Behanding in Spokane and The Pillowman.  And in 2008, he turned heads in the film world with his debut feature, In Bruges , which he also wrote and directed.  (If you haven’t seen that film, you should before CBS Films releases Seven Psychopaths on Oct. 12. It’s a dark comic gem with genuine emotional depth about two hit men who go on the lam when a job goes wrong. Seven Psychopaths finds McDonagh in Quentin Tarantino territory, and dare I say, the Pulp Fiction director should watch his back. (By the way, the two have never met.) McDonagh has a stylish way with violence — there’s an exploding head scene in the movie that rocked my world — he structures his films to move like sleek sports cars, and his black wit is sharper than QT’s. (Yes, I did just assert that.)  Check out the trailer below for a riff on Gandhi’s “an eye for an eye” quote that, thanks to Sam Rockwell’s delivery, makes me laugh every time I hear it. In Seven Psychopaths , Rockwell plays a struggling smart-ass actor who, with his non-violent partner-in-crime (Christopher Walken), does a bit of dog-napping to make ends meet. The fun begins when he makes off with the Shih Tzu of a cold-blooded gangster (Woody Harrelson) and implicates his blocked screenwriter friend (Colin Farrell), who happens to be working on a script identical to the film’s title.  (By the way, Farrell, who’s tight with McDonagh, has done some of the best acting in his career in In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths .) I interviewed McDonagh in Toronto, and I’ll be posting the results on Movieline closer to the release date of Seven Psychopaths .  In the meantime, there was one morsel from our conversation that I wanted to share now. The film also stars singer/songwriter Tom Waits as a bunny-loving psycho with some Dexter similarities, and when I asked McDonagh what his next project might be, he told me that he and Waits had been working on “a creepy fucked-up musical” that, he said, Waits was calling A Very Dark Matter .  He added that their collaboration was in the vein of The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets , the creepy-funny stage musical that Waits created with avant garde theater director Robert Wilson and Beat maniac William S. Burroughs. After my interview with McDonagh, I searched through some of Waits fan forums and found reference to the project. According to one ,  Wilson was involved with the musical, which was supposed to debut in Paris in 2011, and the story was based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1847 fairy tale The Shadow , in which a man’s shadow gets the better of him. “It kind of fell through,” McDonagh said of his collaboration with Waits. But, he added, “it’s in the back of my mind to do.” I think a musical by these two masters of black comedy is an exciting idea, and I encourage their fans to encourage them to resume collaborating.  In the meantime, watch the Seven Psychopaths trailer. Which Baseball Player Is Knockin The Frosting Off These Snow Cakes?

You might not be surprised… Derek Jeter Spotted Out With New Beauty If you guessed Derek Jeter , then you guessed right. Derek Jeter’s love life is heating up. The ultra-private Yankee shortstop was seen out with green-eyed Ralph Lauren model Hannah Davis Monday night “They were flirting, having a great time, and were sitting close together,” says a witness who saw them at Meatpacking hotspot Double Seven for the last Avenue A Soundcheck bash of the summer. The pair took in a performance by singer and model Jenny Bapst and DJing by Nima Yamini and Whoo Kid before Jeter left the club alone, quickly followed by Davis, who is also a singer and songwriter. “They are an item on the quiet,” says another source. “Derek and Hannah left separately, but she met up with him again later.” Jeter, 38, and Virgin Islands-born Davis, 22 — who is best known as the face of Ralph Lauren fragrance Ralph Rocks and has also modeled for Victoria’s Secret, Tommy Hilfiger and L’Wren Scott — have been seeing each other casually for several months. They were spotted dining together at a Tampa, Fla., restaurant in March. They were also at a Tampa Starbucks last December, the same month Jeter met up in Paris with his ex of three years Minka Kelly, with whom he split last August. Hannah is cute and all but, she’s no Minka Kelly …. Source

My Bieber experience took place on July 14th 2012, it was the…

My Bieber experience took place on July 14th 2012, it was the best day of my life.  It all started in May when I found out that Justin would be in Malaysia for MTV World Stage. In order to win passes, we had to play a game on their website. I played the game everyday, 3-4 hours everyday for 8 days. And finally, on the 8th day, I got my passes. I was screaming with joy, I was glad to be able to see my idol perform again. After I won my tickets, I decided that I was going whatever I can to meet him. I made videos, I tweeted Justin and the crew, I DM-ed him, etc. My friends even helped me tweet him and they sent the link to my videos to him and the crew but it didn’t workout. About 3 weeks later, Universal Music was organizing a “Girlfriends Day Out.” They were giving out passes for Justin’s press conference here in Malaysia. I was so upset that I wasn’t able to go. But that didn’t mean that I would give up. About two weeks before the concert, I was giving up. I knew I wasn’t going to meet him and I got very upset. A week before World Stage, MTV was doing roadshows and they were giving out passes and also meet and greets. The roadshow was for two days and I attended both days. And even at the roadshow I didn’t win. I checked the MTV website daily and I found out they were giving out meet and greet passes through an online contest. All I had to do was answer 10 questions about Justin and write a 250 word essay about why I deserved to meet him. I entered as many times as possible using my Facebook account, my sisters’ Facebook account and also my friends’ Facebook account. The contest was about to close on July 9th, just a few days before World Stage. I came home from school and my mum tells me she had a surprise for me. I was being sarcastic and said, “What surprise? I won?” and she said yes. I won two press conference passes and two meet and greets. I immediately started screaming and crying. I couldn’t believe it. All of my hard work had paid off! I called all of my relatives and they were so happy for me. Finally, Saturday arrived. I woke up at 5 am and I got ready. It was time to meet my idol. We (my sister and I) arrived at the hotel where the press conference was supposed to take place. We waited for about 3 hours before we could go into the press conference room. I was so excited! The press conference was only supposed to start at 11 but I made my sister take me earlier. I met so many other amazing Beliebers as well. After we registered our names and we were actually allowed to enter the hall where the press conference was to take place, everyone ran for their lives to get the best seat.  We waited for about 2 hours for Justin in the hall. He was running a little late. We waited and waited. All we could talk about was how excited and grateful we were to get this opportunity! Suddenly, we saw Scrappy and Dan walk in the door, everyone started screaming, “OMG, OMG! JUSTIN’S HERE!”  The minute they walked in, the host announced that they’ll be starting soon. I kept looking out for Justin just in case he walked through the doors. From the corner of my eye, I could see Kenny on stage. They were setting up. And before we knew it, the lights went off. And the man himself, Justin Drew Bieber, walked on stage. I will never forget the excitement that I felt.   He did an acoustic set for everyone. I was the only one in my section who was going crazy. I made a poster that said, “Marry Me?! I love you,” and while he was singing “Die In Your Arms,” he looked at me. We made eye contact a couple of times, I couldn’t believe it. Alfredo even stood in front of my section and he looked at me and WINKED! Just to make sure he was staring at me, I waved at him and he waved at me! I just couldn’t believe that  this was happening to me.  After he had finished with the interviews, it was time for the meet and greets.  Those who who wore the purple tags were asked to leave the room. And those who had the red tags were asked to line up by the stage. We had to wait for about 20 minutes because Justin was doing some round table interview. I did not mentally prepare myself to meet Justin because I kept thinking I was dreaming. My group was the first group to walk up on stage to meet him. There were ten people in the group because they had to get it done fast because they were running out of time.  Moshe is such a sweetheart, he actually smiled and said hi to me. Allison was there too, and it was her birthday. When I saw her, I was like, “HI, ALLISON! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” She just smiled and said thank you.  I couldn’t believe my eyes, Justin was standing right in front of me. We took a picture and everyone rushed to hug him because our time was so limited. I remember just grabbing him and giving him a hug. All I could remember was feeling his arm around my waist and the way he smelt. I couldn’t say anything to him, I was just speechless. I hugged him and the security told us to leave. I wrote Justin a letter and I wanted to give it to him personally but everyone was crowding around him so it was hard to give it to him. Moshe saw me and he took the letter from me. When I saw the next group going up to meet him, I just stood in front of the stage. I was just watching him. He looked so flawless. His skin was so soft and he smelt so good.  July 14th was the best day of my life. I never thought that I could actually have this opportunity. I will never forget the feeling I had when I saw him on stage or the way he looked at me and my poster while he was singing. Justin, I love you so much. Thank you for everything that you do for your fans. We love you so much! – @sarah_eunice21 PS: Never in a million years did I think I would write my experience.  That’s me at 7:55 saying, “I can’t wait to have my Bieber experience” and look at me now. Rush Limbaugh on The Dark Knight Rises Villain: Liberal Conspiracy!

Rush Limbaugh recently referred to a Georgetown student as a slut because she wanted to have birth control covered by her health insurance plan. Incredibly, however, this comment was positively rational compared to the conspiracy theory spewed forth by the radio host on Tuesday. Discussing The Dark Knight Rises and its primary villain, a terrorist played by Tom Hardy named Bane, Limbaugh went off about the clear connection between this bad guy’s name and the issue Democrats have been hammering home in recent election ads: Mitt Romney’s role in the company Bain. It’s a conspiracy, people! “The villain in The Dark Knight Rises is named Bane, B-a-n-e,” Limbaugh ranted. “What is the name of the venture capital firm that Romney ran and around which there’s now this make-believe controversy? Bain. “The movie has been in the works for a long time. The release date’s been known, summer 2012 for a long time. Do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire breathing four eyed whatever it is villain in this movie is named Bane?” Well, readers, he’s asking: Do you think it’s a coincidence? Or is Christopher Nolan a secret agent for Barack Obama? Weigh in now: Are liberals behind the casting of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises?

Kate Upton: Clothed, Still Hot for The Sunday Times

When you’ve already seen Kate Upton nude , all other possibilities pale in comparison. Indeed, the super (duper!) model is featured in the latest edition of Great Britain’s The Sunday Times , scarcely wearing any pants and offering up some decent cleavage shots in a couple poses. But, considering other recent bikini photos of the blonde , it’s hard to get overly excited about these overly layered shots. Upton has simply set the mostly-naked bar far too high for herself. Click away now and compare this spread to others of the beauty:

From Brave to SWATH to Game of Thrones, Has the Anti-Princess Moment Finally Arrived?

Like many other feminist moviegoers, I was more than a little disappointed that Pixar’s long-awaited first female protagonist, Brave ’s Merida, is a princess. But what’s striking, even astonishing, about Brave ‘s treatment of princessdom is its historical honesty; even though Merida convinces her parents to abolish the tradition of arranged marriage, the film’s resolution essentially has our heroine accepting that she has to get married and that her nuptials will be used as a bond between rival clans. (Score one for the patriarchy.) Brave can boast some narrative complexity, if not much feminist bona fides, for having Merida occupy the role that real-life princesses have held for most of history — as insurance against war. This gloomy take on the purpose of royal females aligns Brave more closely with HBO’s medieval misery-fest Game of Thrones than with any other Disney princess movie that’s come before. The anti-princess backlash is nothing new. For decades, cultural critics have been decrying princess movies for overvaluing qualities like beauty, passivity, and femininity, not to mention wealth and social privilege. The studios have made some grudging concessions in recent years: heroines still wear crowns, but they also have more guts. The Guardian’s Jaclyn Friedman recently named this new trend of royal female ferociousness the rise of the “Action Princesses,” specifically citing Snow White and the Huntsman and Brave , though Tangled ’s Rapunzel would also qualify. These films, in which princesses are bold, beautiful, and betrothed, serve as a kind of “you can have it all” message for the 14-and-under set. Unlike Tangled , though, which merely offers a pluckier-than-usual heroine, Brave and Snow White and the Huntsman represent a more radical response to the anti-princess backlash. They feature princess protagonists, but offer serious critiques of the institution of princessdom — highlighting in particular its dangers. Nowhere has that been argument been more emphatically made than in Game of Thrones , which could virtually qualify as anti-princessdom propaganda. Virtually all of Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) troubles, for example, are a result of her royal lineage. Sold to a stranger by her brother as a teenager, the “mother of dragons” gained autonomy in her initially dehumanizing marriage, but remains exiled from her homeland after two seasons for her royal blood. Even more devastating is the plight of Sansa (Sophie Turner), a wannabe princess, who quickly discovers that life as a royal daughter-in-law would be an endless parade of humiliations and empty rituals — even if her would-be hubby weren’t the most evil character ever. Likewise, take Snow White and the Huntsman , in which the fairy-tale princess (Kristen Stewart) is doomed to imprisonment for her claim to the throne. For all these characters, being a princess confers uniqueness, but no privilege; it’s a liability, if not a customized bull’s-eye target. Interestingly, it’s no longer just cultural critics decrying the uniform blah-ness of princess narratives, but the cultural products themselves. By learning how to throw a punch and ride horses into combat, princesses win battles, but lose the war for narrative sophistication. After all, princesses may be less passive these days, but they continue to be morally unassailable. So while Snow White fights her usurping stepmother Ravenna (Charlize Theron) for the throne, the queen successfully launches a campaign to seize the hearts and minds, or at least the attention, of audiences. Ravenna doesn’t steal the movie because the actress playing her chews up the scenery more conspicuously than her younger co-star (though that doesn’t hurt), but because she’s a much more interesting and developed character than the “pure,” virginal Snow White. Not insignificantly, Ravenna gets as much screen time as Snow White, and the tragic nature of her back story rivals her stepdaughter’s; her thirst for power is born from a justified hatred of men in power, and her capture of the crown at the beginning of the film is actually easy to root for. The psychologically damaged and perpetually obsessed nature of Ravenna’s character makes her the female counterpart to the ethically perplexed antiheroes that are the de rigueur protagonists of cable dramas, like Mad Men ’s Don Draper or Breaking Bad ’s Walter White. Snow White and the Huntsman is far from the only example of princess movies receiving the Wicked treatment. Mirror Mirror , for example, tells the same tale from the POV of Queen Julia Roberts, who commandeers the film’s voiceover narration. And the anti-princess take will continue in 2014’s Maleficent , which will star a horned Angelina Jolie as the villainess of Sleeping Beauty . The appeal of these fairy-tale rewrites is, of course, the reorientation of sympathies. For example, the ability to understand, if not necessarily root for, the queen makes clear the audience’s fallacious identification with the princess. After a while, it seems eminently more reasonable to identify with Ravenna than Snow White, since she’s the one who more traditionally follows the hero’s path: a commoner with talent (in this case, beauty) who ventures into a strange land (the bizarro-universe of the aristocracy) and overcomes a weaker antagonist (the lovestruck king) to claim victory. Princess movies will be with us for a time yet, but it’s wonderful to see that even if princesses aren’t growing up, the movies about them certainly are. Now, if only we could convince studios that girls’ lives and experiences matter even if they don’t live in castles… Inkoo Kang is a Boston-based film journalist and regular contributor to BoxOffice Magazine whose work has appeared in Pop Matters and Screen Junkies .
