Sarah Palin earned the nickname Sarah Barracuda for her gritty play on the basketball court, not in the political arena – though the quality served her well there as well. It’s no surprise, then, that she’s name-dropping popular figures of the moment to stay relevant rooting for another hard-working point guard, New York’s Jeremy Lin. On Fox Business Network yesterday, the ex-Alaska governor flashed a Lin t-shirt and raved about his performance. “All of a sudden, our team is the Knicks,” Palin said. “Linsanity, man,” she raved. Well put. “I mean, talk about an all-American story where sort of the underdog, you know, but works so hard, just erased all the stuff out there on the periphery in his life.” “Humble, and now look where he is.” Look where Sarah Palin is too. Four years ago, on the cusp of being the first woman V.P. of the U.S. Now spouting vapid nonsense people have long since tuned out. A true riches to rags story if ever there were one.
Everything old was new again this weekend at the box office, with a third sequel and a WWII film cruising to the lead opposite pockets of crummy weather and a pair of NFL playoff games that were about as good as they could possibly be. What hit? What kind of didn’t? Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. Underworld: Awakening Gross: $25,400,000 (new) Screens: 3,078 (PSA $8,252) Weeks: 1 And with this windfall — combined with the return of original star Kate Beckinsale — the Underworld franchise crosses hallowed box-office milestone threshold of… $300 million? Globally ? Four films, $300 million ? Not that you or I personally would turn our noses up at a check for $300 million, but we’re not making midwinter mass-pop vampire/lycan confections. Thank God for DVD/cable! Keep those revenue streams flowing! Related: I think I am going to throw up. 2. Red Tails Gross: $19,100,000 (new) Screens: 2,512 (PSA $7,604) Weeks: 1 Did you do your part this weekend to support African-American cinema, as George Lucas pleaded ? And if so, what did you think of Pariah ? 3. Contraband Gross: $12,200,000 ($46,100,000) Screens: 2,870 (PSA $4,251) Weeks: 2 (Change: -49.9%) Underworld: Awakening ‘s big huge boring shrug notwithstanding, let’s give Beckinsale some credit for being the first star since — wait for it — Kellan Lutz to have two films in the weekend’s top three finishers. Don’t say you’re not impressed. 4. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close Gross: $10,545,000 ($11,237,000) Screens: 2,630 (PSA: $4,010) Weeks: 5 (+11,484%) Expanding by more than 2,600 screens, The Daldry admirably battled some of the year’s most vicious reviews to date, settling snugly into fourth place and a (very) modest per-screen average just over $4,000. For those keeping score at home, that would make ELAIC the lowest-averaging Sandra Bullock wide opening in a decade ( Murder by Numbers , $3,495 PSA) and the lowest-averaging Tom Hanks wide opening since 2007 ( Charlie Wilson’s War , $3,750). Playing Jeopardy! , Thomas Horn made more than seven times the amount that most theaters took in over roughly a day and a half of ELAIC screenings. 5. Haywire Gross: $8,410,000 (New) Screens: 2,439 (PSA $3,690) Weeks: 1 Meanwhile, Gina Carano is like, “I quit cage-fighting for this ?” Don’t give up, Gina! You could be the next Kate Beckinsale! Wait, that came out wrong. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
DJ/producer cements his breakthrough year with five Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. By Akshay Bhansali Skrillex Photo: Getty Images Back in late 2010, EDM superstar DJ/producer deadmau5 told MTV News a star was on the rise. He said his friend and former post-hardcore/emo rocker Sonny Moore — producing and performing under the name Skrillex — was going to be a force to be reckoned with. “He’s taking over — I think he’s going to outdo me,” deadmau5 told MTV News at the time. “I think he’s going to be the first artist on Beatport to eat my lunch and take over the top 10. I don’t think anyone in Beatport history has ever done it, but if he does it, I’ll be so proud of him, the little goblin!” Now, the ever-prophetic ‘mau5 has more to be proud of. A lot more. In our Best Electronic Dance Music Artists of 2011 coverage, MTV’s roundtable has named Skrillex the #1 EDM Artist of 2011, underscored by his most recent series of accolades: He scored a whopping five Grammy nominations, including being the first DJ to land a Best New Artist nod. Indeed, Moore’s musical background — both on his own and as a member of his former group, From First to Last — has carried over into Skrillex’s brand of fiery electronica. Skrillex has garnered an audience the world over that includes ravers, house heads and rockers alike. In today’s laptop generation of music, Skrillex is the new “rock.” From his remix of Benny Benassi and Gary Go’s “Cinema” to the recent Avicii pop song “Le7els” (not officially released yet), Skrillex dropped massive re-workings in ’11, in addition to his More Monsters and Sprites EP. He scored video games, produced records for Korn, launched his own OWSLA label and hit almost every major festival in the States, including Coachella and Lollapalooza. An exceptional catalog of releases coupled with an incessant touring schedule has made Skrillex the biggest EDM star of the year. In 2012, he plans to tour 322 of the 365 days. While he didn’t expect to become recognized as this year’s biggest success story, Skrillex’s peers say the swell of critical and fan support is fitting. “He definitely deserves it,” former OWSLA tourmate, DJ/producer Porter Robinson, told MTV News. “I’ve been saying it all year: He’s the most influential musician of this year, in any genre. Incredible sound designer. Incredible songwriter. Amazing performer.” “He’s been in bands before,” EDM artist and collaborator Sofi told us. “He’s an excellent songwriter. He can sing. He’s just so versatile that I think that comes through in his music. He kind of brought this ‘rock,’ ‘raw’ element into electronic music. He’s the punk rock of the new generation.” Even industry veteran David Guetta, who lands at #2 on our list of the Best EDM Artists of 2011, agreed with all the praise heaped on Skrillex. “He’s extremely talented, and I’m very happy for him,” Guetta said of Skrill’s Grammy noms. “It’s a statement: I think it’s really good that an artist from our community is nominated just as ‘an artist.’ Not as a ‘dance’ artist, you know? I think that it’s good that [our] music is now getting the attention and the respect that all the other styles of music, like hip-hop, are getting.” MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV’s Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage. Related Videos Best EDM Artist Of 2011 Debate
Lil Wayne released a 28 min “PSA” where he talks about Steve Jobs passing, his drinking habits, tattoos, why he plays guitar, skateboarding, and more. At the 3:00 minute mark in the video he begins the rant about his infamous syrup-filled styrofoam cup : “Everybody got the cup now. I started drinking [syrup] because I’m from the south. People been drinking syrup for years. That’s where it was made popular. I’m human…I respected it because it was a culture. I didn’t do it because it was cool. When I picked it up ya’ll didn’t know what it was…what I wanna say is…I can’t blame the kids. I blame you adults. It’s ok for a kid to see something and want to be like it. It’s only right. But for an adult to fabricate something for some dumb reason it messes up our youth and messes up the future. So I ask you what is your reason, why are you drinking syrup?…I started drinking it because I was sick…but this is tea in my cup right now..” Umm..yeah… At the 8:22 mark he goes off about the trend of rappers having tattoos allover their bodies: “I have no problem with people getting a billion tattoos, but why are you doing it?” Then at 11:20 he talks about the “1.8 Million of my hard earned money” he spent on his Bugatti. Weezy says the folks at the Bugatti dealership called him the “Barack Obama” of Bugatti for being the first African-American rapper to own the million-dollar auto. At 13:28 he defends his playing of a guitar and putting out a rock album. “My reason for picking up that guitar is that I wanted to be able to pick up a guitar and sing to a woman. Why are you doing it?” Who needs “MTV Cribs” when you have live from Weezy’s? Watch the full clip and let us know your thoughts. WEEZY F BABY PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT from DERICK G on Vimeo . On her website Kelli Space confesses to having $189,182.39 outstanding in student loans from her undergraduate days at Northeastern University. She set up that site to ask your help in paying the loans off. Space, who's 23, did get a job after she received her bachelor's degree. But she lives with her parents because the monthly nut on the loans is $891. In November 2011, that monthly bill will be $1600 monthly for 20 years, reports Gawker. Space explains the mess she got into as the result of being the first in her family to attend college. Therefore, she was not properly tuned into how much debt to take on and what kind of income she could anticipate earning with a college degree. As of today, the public has pitched in about a $1,951.40 toward retiring Space's debt. Space's ultimate goal is to raise $200K so that makes only $198,048.60 to go. I am quoting the words/views of Kelly on her website Kelli Space “Hi all, While I’m extremely grateful to everyone who’s donated, I fear I’ve misrepresented myself in one way or another, as there have been many misconceptions the past couple of days. I never intended to pass my loans along to someone else and absolve myself of all responsibility. I also never intended to come across as a “beggar.” This website was about putting it out there that I made a mistake, letting people know the extent of the debt burden I’m under because of it that I’m not the only one in this position and asking for help if anyone was so inclined to give it. If not, absolutely fine. If this is what it took to address the issues of student loan practices, I’m happy to have helped get the dialogue going, as obviously I’m an extreme case. My loans are absolutely my cross to bear alone, and I’ve been making regular payments since I began my payment plan. I never intend to default, and since I have such a small chance of declaring bankruptcy, I don’t intend to take that “easy way out” either. I don’t believe my college years were in any way glamorous, though I do realize I chose to give myself an experience that many other people can not and will not experience for themselves. It is MY fault, and mine alone, then, that I am in this debt due to “needing” to attend Northeastern 5 years ago. My gross abuse of finances to pay for my education should not be passed along to anyone else. I do not expect donations from anyone — how could I? There was no way for me to know the kind of response I’d receive. Those who have donated have shown their support and that has encouraged me a great deal. People have provided me with various links, causing me to look deeper into legislation on student loans; people have asked questions to understand student loan situations better; and people have shared their own related issues, and I absolutely feel for them as well. I admire those who have told me they’ve paid off their loans, or those who didn’t take out more than they could handle from the onset. By all means, please donate to any of the many causes out there over me. I’m aware that my issue will remain an issue for some 20 years due to my own poor decision-making, and other immediate causes deserve any amount you can give. Please, do not think I expect anyone’s money, particularly over any other cause. Thank you to everyone who has been open and honest on how they feel. I appreciate all conversation on the topic and, trust me, no one has been harder on me than myself. Thanks again, Kelli “November 24, 2010” ** Link to her page ** http://twohundredthou.com/ added by: KSirys

‘I’m in the best shape of my life,’ former ‘Hills’ star tells Us Weekly. By Mawuse Ziegbe Audrina Patridge and Tony Dovolani Photo: ABC Audrina Patridge has always kept a slender figure during her six seasons on MTV’s beachside drama “The Hills,” but she’s really feeling the burn in her latest reality role. Patridge is part of the latest cast of celebs to wiggle into some sequins and twirl around the dance floor on “Dancing With the Stars.” Even though the season has just started, the starlet said working the classic ballroom-dance moves has already paid off. “I would say I’m in the best shape of my life,” Patridge told Us Weekly. “Dancing is so different than going to the gym. I’m going to be so sad when it’s over!” Patridge isn’t swooning because she’s dropping pounds; she’s amped because she’s packing on muscle and scoring major definition. “I feel more toned and more defined, for sure,” she said. “I have maintained my weight, but I’m really, really defining my muscles and toning up,” adding, “I am excited! I have so much energy!” Patridge, who grooved onto the parquet first alongside partner Tony Dovolani on Monday’s season 11 kickoff, might be enjoying her new look but did admit to stressing about breaking in the dance floor. “It was because they didn’t really know what to expect from everyone, so we were the first ones out there setting the standards. But it was so much fun,” Patridge told MTV News of kicking things off Monday. “It was nerve-racking being the first ones out. It was so much fun. Now, I’m more comfortable with the setting and being on set and the live audience. I think it was a good thing, ’cause we went first and got it out of the way and got to relax.” Are you rooting for Audrina on “Dancing With the Stars”? Let us know in the comments!
I don’t think Vanessa Hudgens is trying to pull off the homeless street kid look purchased at your local mall….I also don’t think Vanessa Hudgens is all that hot, but instead think she’s one of those Jojo Levesques who was only being lusted for cuz she was 17, and the day she turned 18, she became a troll of a bitch who only black guys like…. But this does remind me of this street kid by my house, unfortunately not nearly as hot as the street kid near my house. She is always half naked, showing off her skinny, hungry, drug addicted body, in a bikini top, or bra and little shorts, or a little punk rock skirt with no panties, that she intentionally positions herself to show everyone her pussy. But maybe I just like mine better cuz I know I can have sex with her if I really wanted to shell out the 20 dollars….where as Hudgens is a little harder and living the good life for that to ever really happen…but when her free ride ends…I know the little slut in her, we’ve all seen, will make a comeback, and sometimes that’s good enough reason to keep tabs on a bitch…
When I first started up on Twitter , the first celebs I decided to interact with were Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore. I made fun of their relationship, her fear of getting older, her accident victim child created in her damaged, inadequate womb, her sexual relationship with guy who I guess had mommy issues, her shitty fake tits, and then they blocked me…..and my life didn’t change one bit, except maybe not being the first to find these pictures of Demi posing in her bikini, but then again, who really wants to see a 50 year old in a bikini, no matter how much she bench presses, or how many ab crunches she can do in an hour. She’s disgusting. She was never hot. Just over-rated whore trash…..but you probably like her…so here it is…
