Between radio hits, headlining gigs and even his own documentary, the French DJ/producer is a dance-music heavyweight. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: Getty Images If he built a bridge between urban music and electronic music last year, in 2011, French DJ/producer David Guetta now presides over a superhighway that extends around the world. In our Best Electronic Dance Music Artists of 2011 coverage, MTV’s roundtable has named Guetta our #2 EDM Artist of 2011 — but that doesn’t begin to explain his impact on the industry. David Guetta is now a pop-music superstar. After collecting a Grammy in February for his remix of Madonna’s “Revolver,” Guetta teased his next opus, Nothing but the Beat, during Miami Music Week in March. His highly anticipated follow-up to last year’s One Love would deliver a feature list on steroids, including Ludacris and Taio Cruz teaming up for first single “Little Bad Girl.” Radio hits came in the form of Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida rapping on “Where Them Girls At” and then the album’s latest single, “Without You,” an emotional track with Usher that David calls “the biggest song” on NBTB. Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Jennifer Hudson, Sia and Timbaland also all lent their vocals to the double disc. For EDM purists, Nothing but the Beat had plenty to offer, like stellar co-productions with Afrojack (“Lunar” and “The Future”) and Avicii (on the Grammy-nominated “Sunshine”). DJ Mag crowned Guetta the #1 DJ on the planet, and he headlined the world’s biggest festival’s, including Belgium’s Tomorrowland Festival, Miami’s Ultra Music Festival and Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival. Guetta has also hit screens small and large this year. His documentary with Burn, also titled “Nothing but the Beat,” has been screened in New York and L.A. He’s hit “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” with Usher, and filmed a viral video with Web sensation Keenan Cahill . His American Music Awards performance with Nicki Minaj seems to indicate that “Turn Me On” will be the next single from Nothing but the Beat, and fans can expect a shocking new video (and much more, we’re sure) early next year. MTV will reveal the best artists, songs and movies of the year. Come to MTV News each day to see more big reveals and check out more of MTV’s Best of 2011 music, TV, movies and news coverage. Organizers call off Belgium event, which featured Eminem, Foo Fighters, Wiz Khalifa and many others, after deaths following stage collapse. By Gil Kaufman Revelers leave the Pukkelpop music festival Photo: AFP/Getty Images Officials in Belgium canceled the Pukkelpop music festival on Friday after the death toll in a stage collapse rose to five. Two more people died overnight after a freak thunderstorm ripped through the festival site in Hasselt, ripping down trees and destroying a stage while Chicago rock band the Smith Westerns were performing their set. According to MSNBC , none of the band’s members were hurt, but their equipment was destroyed in the fourth major incident involving a concert stage collapse this summer. Organizers decided to cancel the rest of the fest and brought in buses and trains to transfer the 60,000 festivalgoers home. The action came after a brief, violent thunderstorm passed through on Thursday evening, collapsing concert tents and the main stage scaffolding, sending panicked concertgoers out into fields of mud in search of shelter. At least 140 people were injured in the incident, 10 of them seriously. “Pukkelpop is in deep mourning,” festival organizer Chokri Mahassine said in a statement. “What has happened is very exceptional and could not have been predicted.” Not aware of the severity of the situation at the time, Smith Westerns singer Cullen Omori tweeted about the stage collapse as it happened. He first complained about the band’s equipment being destroyed (in a since-deleted post) and then wrote, “praying no one go hurt. Wtf.” The band later issued a statement about the collapse. “We had just finished the first song of our set at Pukkelpop when the stage/tent started shaking and simply thought it was a storm passing through. I made a comment about Cheap Trick and we were about to play the next one when our tour manager yelled at me to run off the stage. Right then the tress collapsed one foot in front of Max. At this point we thought only the stage broke, not the tent. Amid the chaos it was hard to tell exactly what had happened, but after the rescue teams started coming in it became clear that there were severe injuries and we are now being told there are reports of multiple deaths. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones in today’s tragedy.” The festival’s lineup included the Foo Fighters, 30 Seconds to Mars , Wiz Khalifa, Rise Against and Eminem. A Facebook page has been set up to honor the victims and a number of bands tweeted their condolences. “Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the tragic events at Pukkelpop,” the Foos tweeted . “We are all safe at Pukkelpop. Crazy storm. This is awful. Hearts go out to all,” added Fleet Foxes . Eminem was slated to headline on Friday (August 19), on a bill that also included the Ting Tings, Deftones, Crystal Castles and D12. Saturday’s show was to feature the Offspring, Kasabian, the Kills, Lykke Li, Busy P and Odd Future. The Pukkelpop tragedy follows on the heels of earlier stage collapses this summer at shows by Cheap Trick and the Flaming Lips, and just last week, Sugarland , where five people were killed.
‘There’s no Rick Ross offensive things going on in there, even though it sounds like it,’ she tells MTV News of recent radio freestyle. By Steven Roberts Kreayshawn Photo: MTV News Kreayshawn has received her fair share of hate over her relatively brief career. The Best New Artist nominee at the 2011 VMAs exploded onto the scene with “Gucci Gucci,” but critics have been quick to write her off as a flash in the pan. Find out how to win a trip to the VMAs courtesy of Foursquare and MTV! Her freestyle on Philly’s “Cosmic Kev Come Up Show” earlier this month didn’t do her any favors either. During the less-than-stellar display, Kreayshawn took a shot at Rick Ross and his much-scrutinized past as a corrections officer. “You tryin’ to play me like a boss? You faker than Rick Ross,” she rapped on-air. When MTV News caught up with Kreay earlier this week, she said she wasn’t intending to dis the Maybach Music Group boss — even though she admits it came across that way. “I feel like with anything, you’re painting a picture. I’ve never, ever intentionally dissed anybody my whole career, and I don’t do that personally with friends either,” the Bay Area rapper said. “I’m not like a person to go against anyone or anything. So hey, no offense to you Rick Ross. There’s no Rick Ross offensive things going on in there, even though it sounds like it.” Kreayshawn explains why Diddy is her “dad.” Kreayshawn said she doesn’t know Ross and was just trying to make words rhyme. Hopefully things turn up for Kreay on Sunday, August 28, at the 2011 VMAs. She is up Best New Artist alongside other hip-hop rising stars, including Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and Tyler, the Creator, as well as rock group Foster the People. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. A storm knocks down several stages at festival, killing three and injuring 71. By James Dinh Jared Leto Photo: Leonard Adam/ WireImage With the tragic stage collapse at Sugarland’s Indiana State Fair show still fresh in the minds of concertgoers, Jared Leto sent precaution to 30 Seconds to Mars’ fans at Belgium’s Pukkelpop festival on Thursday night (August 18) as a storm passed through, knocking down several stages and causing at least three deaths and 71 injuries. “CRAZY STORM AT PUKKELPOP IN BELGIUM – NOT SURE WE WILL BE ABLE TO GO ON STAGE – STAYED TUNED. SAFETY FIRST,” Leto tweeted prior to his band’s set. Things took a turn for the worse a mere half-hour later, when Leto tweeted , “FOUR STAGES DOWN – STILL RAINING + THUNDER IF YOU ARE HERE PLEASE BE SAFE.” According to reports, Pukkelpop was hit with strong winds and rainfall at around 6:15 p.m. local time, which caused several structures and stages to collapse. Nearby trees were also uprooted, causing even more damage to the fairgrounds and hazard to the estimated 60,000 in attendance. Chokri Mahassine, the organizer of the three-day festival, told The Associated Press, “We have for now put the festival on hold until we understand the situation completely.” Shortly after the collapse, the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman took to his website to send sympathy to those affected by the events. “Our deepest thoughts and sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives today at the show in Belgium. We are absolutely devastated that this celebration ended in tragedy,” Leto wrote. “To those that were injured we are sending thoughts and prayers. Obviously under these horrible and dangerous circumstances, and out of respect for those who have passed, Thirty Seconds to Mars will not be playing. We love you all and hope tomorrow brings a better day.” Share your condolences in the comments below. Related Artists 30 Seconds To Mars

This sick f*ck thinks fondling little boys — his own nephews at that– is some kind of game! A Belgian Bishop who resigned last year after his shocking child abuse scandal was revealed, doesn’t seem to feel the least bit of shame about what he’s done. In addition to writing a tell-all, the perverted priest recently appeared in a televised interview where he made light of the abuse. A former bishop’s televised admission that he sexually abused two of his nephews caused an uproar in Belgium on Friday, with the prime minister, senior clergy and a prosecutor expressing shock at the way the ex-prelate made light of his offenses. In an interview that aired Thursday Roger Vangheluwe, the former bishop of Bruges, spoke of his sexual abuse as “a little game,” that involved fondling, but no “rough sex.” “I was never naked” and the abuse was never about “real sexuality,” said Vangheluwe, 74. He resigned as bishop in 2010 after admitting he had abused one of his nephews for 13 years – until the boy was 18. In the TV interview aired Thursday, he revealed that he had abused a second nephew “a few times, a couple of times, not for years.” Vangheluwe apologized for the pain he had caused, but denied being a pedophile. “I never felt the least attraction to a child,” he said. “And I still don’t. From me toward him (the nephew) there was a bit of intimacy that occurred each time we saw one another. And of which we later said, ‘That’s not right.’” The abuse occurred at sleep-over family gatherings, Vangheluwe said. Bruges Prosecutor Jean-Marie Berkvens said Friday the abuse of the second nephew lasted for two years. The victim was younger than 8 at the time. Both cases occurred too long ago to be prosecuted. Berkvens said he was “shocked” by how Vangheluwe “treats everything as if it were a trifle. I can assure you it was not.” Vangheluwe complained in the hour-long interview that the church was targeted by abuse probes, while other sectors, like sports organizations, were let off too easily. “Why is it different for priests than for other situations? Why should the church pay compensation and there is no compensation in other professions?” he asked. “The church should not be pushed in a special corner.” The interview took place in a wooded Catholic retreat in Ferte-Imbault in central France, where Vangheluwe has been sent by the Vatican. Throughout the interview, he sat relaxed, sometimes smiling and at times shrugging his shoulders as if to signal that the events he spoke of were not very serious. This dude can’t be serious… Source

In the early 1980s, Marvin Gaye retreated to Ostend, Belgium on the advice of a Belgian concert promoter named Freddy Cousaert who wanted to help Marvin get his life back on track. Marvin lived in the city for two years before returning to the United States. Filmmaker Richard Olivier filmed a documentary about Marvin’s time in Belgium. The documentary was rarely seen outside of Belgium, but features quite a bit of intimate footage of Marvin walking around the city, interviews, and rehearsal footage. Some beautiful soul uploaded the 55 minute documentary, which was released after Marvin’s death on April 1st 1984 at the hands of his father, to the Internet. Watch it below!
