Hi Hater: Jeb Bush Says #BlackLivesMatter Movement Doesn’t Matter Because It’s Just A Slogan

Jeb Bush Says Black Lives Matters Movement Is Just A Slogan Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush dismissed the Black Lives Matter movement and its eponymous chant as a political “slogan” Thursday, and said potential Democratic rival and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley should not have apologized for saying “white lives matter” during a protest last weekend at Netroots Nation. Via MSNBC : “If he believes that white lives matter, which I hope he does, then he shouldn’t apologize to a group that seems to disagree with it,” the Republican presidential candidate told reporters Thursday at a town hall in New Hampshire. The Black Lives Matter movement, sparked largely in response to recent killings of unarmed African-Americans by white police officers, shook up the presidential election this week following a surprise protest at the annual Netroots Nation conference in Phoenix, Arizona. On Saturday, the progressive gathering was interrupted when black activists took the stage during a presidential candidate forum, forcing O’Malley and fellow White House hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont into uncomfortable territory as they struggled to respond to questions on race relations and police violence. O’Malley came under fire for adding “white lives matter, all lives matter” to the protesters’ calls – a statement he has since apologized for. But Bush said Thursday that O’Malley had nothing to be sorry about. “I mean, we’re so uptight and so politically correct now that we apologize for saying ‘lives matter?’” Bush said. “Life is precious, it’s a gift from God. I frankly think that it’s one of the most important values that we have. I know in the political context, it’s a slogan, I guess. And should he have apologized? No.” Earlier in the day, Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton – who skipped this year’s Netroots and was, therefore, spared from the ambush – attempted to soar where her rivals had floundered on the issue and spoke at length about racial justice. Addressing a packed church in South Carolina, where an apparent hate crime recently left nine African-American parishioners dead, Clinton said: “It is essential that we all stand up and say loudly and clearly, ‘Yes, black lives matter.’” Discuss… YT

President Obama flubbed his remarks to troops at Fort Drum Thursday, when he told the US Army’s 10th Mountain Division about the time he awarded the first Medal of Honor to someone not receiving it posthumously. The medal, he said, went to Jared Monti. The only issue is that Jared Monti died in service, and did in fact receive the medal posthumously. Bernie Sanders Vs. Rand Paul With A Little Franken On The Side

GOP Senators Reject Tax Cuts for Middle Class

Republicans in the Senate shot down two Democratic plans to extend Bush-era tax cuts to the middle-class, because the proposals did not also extend them for the wealthiest two percent of Americans. After two hours of debate, cloture vote failed to gain the 60 votes necessary to bypass a filibuster. For a proposal to extend all expiring tax cuts on individuals with incomes of less than $200,000 a year and married couples making less than $250,000, the vote was 53-36. On a plan to renew tax cuts for all filers with incomes of less than $1 million, the vote was 53-37. Both plans would let tax rates for high-income Americans return to tax rate levels that were in place during the Clinton administration. Republicans, pushing for making tax cuts for the rich permanent, had vowed to defeat both bills. President Barack Obama, having returned to Washington from a surprise trip to Afghanistan, said he was “very disappointed” by the Senate's failure to agree to legislation passed in the House that would make middle-class tax cuts permanent. The Senate debate was a showdown over whether the wealthy should be excluded from an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts. “These votes today are not going to settle anything,” says CBS News Capitol Hill correspondent Bob Fuss, “but Democrats want to make a political point: Republicans are so determined to preserve tax cuts for the wealthy, they'll block them for everyone else.” Democrats already eyeing the 2012 elections are using the debate to depict Republicans as guardians of the rich who are willing to jeopardize middle class families in order to further fatten the accounts of the wealthiest Americans. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., called out Republicans for pushing tax breaks for the wealthy after “time and time again coming down to the floor of the Senate and saying, 'We have a huge deficit! We have a huge national debt!' “And today what they want to do is drive that national debt up by $700 billion over the next ten years. “Isn’t it enough for you that the top one percent earns more income than the bottom 50%?” Sanders said. “Isn’t it enough for you that in the last 25 years almost all new income has gone to the top one percent? Do you really think that the CEOs of Wall Street who will make hundreds of millions of dollars a year really need a tax break?” “Let’s not give tax breaks to millionaires who in many ways have never had it so good,” he said. Sen. John Kyl, R-Ariz., responded by saying Sanders' comments were indicative of why bipartisan compromise was not possible in Washington. “It’s not Republicans' fault that these things take time and we still haven't resolved the tax issue,” Kyl added. added by: TimALoftis

Republicans Move to Block Ron Paul from Monetary Policy Subcommittee Chair

Ron Paul will not head up the House’s monetary policy subcommittee if John Boehner has anything to say about it. “Five GOP leadership aides, speaking anonymously because a decision isn’t final, say incoming House Speaker John Boehner has discussed ways to prevent Paul from becoming chairman or to keep him on a tight leash if he does,” reports Bloomberg. “If Boehner, who will help determine who gets to chair subcommittees as early as Dec. 8, rejects Paul, he may have to contend with thousands of grassroots supporters and dozens of younger lawmakers who see Paul as a hero.” Boehner and the establishment Republicans rode to victory last month on the shoulders of the Tea Party movement. Prior to the election, Tea Party activists in Maine, Colorado, and Utah focused on abolishing the Federal Reserve. Some predicted that if Republicans were to sweep the House they would become much more confrontational with the Federal Reserve. “The popularity of Tea Party candidates in U.S. elections could spell renewed efforts to curtail the power and independence of the Federal Reserve, which has been cast as an emblem of big government overreach,” Reuters reported in late October. Many establishment Republicans agree with senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina who insists the Tea Party and its vision of less government has no long-term vision or prospects for political viability. Instead of dismantling the Federal Reserve, establishment Republicans have called for reforming the private bankster cartel masquerading as a government agency supposedly answerable to the American people. On Tuesday, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn. and Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind. called for Congress to change the Fed’s “dual mandate” now requiring it to promote both price stability and full employment and instead focus on keeping inflation low and not worrying about reducing unemployment. “It is time that we work to clarify the mandate of the Federal Reserve,” said Corker, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, in a statement announcing his support for the change. “Providing our central bank with a clear and explicit focus on keeping inflation low will serve America better than the broader mandate approach we have today,” the National Journalreports. Corker and Pence proffered their milquetoast bill after it was revealed the Fed gave a big chunk of its multi-trillion dollar Wall Street bailout to foreign banksters and transnational corporations. “We now know that the Fed loaned trillions of dollars at zero or near-zero interest rates not only to the largest financial institutions in the country, but also to many of our largest corporations — including GE, McDonalds and Verizon,” said an outraged Bernie Sanders, the socialist senator from Vermont. “Perhaps most surprising is the huge sum that went to bail out foreign private banks and corporations, including two European megabanks — Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse,” he said. “As a result of this disclosure, other members of Congress and I will be taking a very extensive look at all aspects of how the Federal Reserve functions.” Bernie Sanders and Ron Paul may take a serious look at the Fed. But we shouldn’t expect the rest of Congress to support an effort to cut out the cancer that plagues the economy. In July, Paul’s Federal Reserve Transparency Act that would have eliminated restrictions on GAO audits of the Fed and open its operations to congressional oversight was defeated. “Since its inception, the Federal Reserve has always operated in the shadows, without sufficient scrutiny or oversight, while Congress has kept its hands off and its eyes closed,” Ron Paul wrote after language from his bill failed to make it into a conference report on the so-called financial reform bill (that ultimately gave the Fed more power, not less). “The Federal Reserve has presided over the near-complete destruction of the United States dollar. Since 1913 the dollar has lost over 95% of its purchasing power, aided and abetted by the Federal Reserve’s loose monetary policy. The Federal Reserve Transparency Act would achieve much-needed transparency of the Federal Reserve System.” Now that Republicans are in charge of the House, they join the Democrats and make sure the Federal Reserve continues to operate in the shadows and remains unanswerable to the American people. http://kommoncents.blogspot.com/2010/12/why-does-boehner-not-want-ron-paul-as.ht… added by: Dagum
