Olbermann Mangles Another Fact, Claims Abe Lincoln Only Lost One Election

In today’s “What Fact Did Keith Olbermann Mangle Now” segment, the host of MSNBC’s “Countdown” on Tuesday hysterically mocked Arizona senatorial candidate Sharron Angle for claiming Abraham Lincoln lost “quite a few” elections. “Just for the record, do you know how many elections Abraham Lincoln lost in his lifetime?” Olbermann arrogantly asked. “Seven of eight he won,” answered MSNBC’s hottest property. Just for the record, Olbermann wasn’t even close to being right (video follows with transcript and commentary, h/t The Corner ): KEITH OLBERMANN, HOST: It`s Tea Time. If I asked you which Tea Partier was likeliest to compare themselves to Abraham Lincoln, could you guess? Yes, it`s Sharon obtuse Angle from Nevada, in the middle of a fawning interview with a supporter who confessed to once predicting she would not win the nomination. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) BILL MANDERS, SHARRON ANGLE SUPPORTER: I said you`ve lost; how are you going to win this? I don`t possibly think that you`re going to win it. SHARRON ANGLE (R), TEA PARTY CANDIDATE FOR SENATE: That`s right. MANDERS: And then you surprised everybody and won this nomination. ANGLE: That`s right. MANDERS: This opportunity to run against the beast, Harry Reid. ANGLE: Well, you know, it`s just like Abraham Lincoln. He lost quite a few. But he won the big one. He won the one that mattered for this country. And really that`s what we`re in. MANDERS: Do you think you`re too — (END VIDEO CLIP) OLBERMANN: Oh, now you`re Abraham Lincoln? I`m beginning to doubt you`re even Sue Lowden. Just for the record, do you know how many elections Abraham Lincoln lost in his lifetime? The Illinois state assembly in 1832. He prevailed in four elections for state assembly, one for Congress, two for president. Seven of eight he won. Sharron Angle, I knew Abraham Lincoln`s won-loss record, and you`re no Abraham Lincoln. For those that didn’t catch it, Olbermann was spoofing that infamous moment in the 1988 vice presidential debate between Lloyd Bentsen and Dan Quayle. Deliciously, it is the “Countdown” host that was no Jack Kennedy in this instance, for as Jeffrey Lord reported at the American Spectator Friday, Olbermann was 100 percent wrong: Here’s Abraham Lincoln’s actual score with elections. He did indeed win four state assembly elections, and lose in 1832, just as Olbermann says. In fact, Abe ran 8th in a field of 13 candidates back there in 1832. Here’s Lincoln’s record with voters, per [Pulitzer Prize winning Lincoln biographer Carl] Sandburg: 1832 — Lost his first race for the state assembly 1834 — Won a seat in the state assembly 1836 — Won re-election 1838 — Won re-election 1840 — Won re-election 1842 — Lost a race for Congress to John Hardin (per biographer Sandburg. Lincoln actually came in behind a friend, Edward D. Baker — losing his own Sangamon County delegates to Baker. Later, he would name one of his sons for Baker). Lincoln structures deal that Hardin, Baker and finally himself would each serve back-to-back single terms in Congress. 1846 — Wins congressional seat, succeeding his friend Baker, who had succeeded Hardin. As per the Lincoln deal. 1854 — Elected again to the Illinois legislature, but loses a race for the United States Senate to Lyman Trumbull. Writes to a friend: “I regret my defeat moderately, but I am not nervous about it.” Mary Lincoln was so enraged at this loss that she never again spoke to Trumbull’s wife Julia — who had been a bridesmaid at Mary and Abe’s wedding. 1856 — Loses the vice-presidential nomination of the new Republican Party to William L. Dayton, a former U.S. Senator from New Jersey. Dayton received 259 votes to Lincoln’s 115, becoming the running mate of John Charles Fremont. Hearing of his defeat, Lincoln laughs and says, “It must be some other Lincoln.” 1858 — Lincoln loses a race for the United States Senate to legendary rival Senator Stephen A. Douglas. In the course of the campaign, the two travel Illinois in what are known to history as the “Lincoln-Douglas” debates. The debates help make Lincoln — and his pro-union, anti-slavery argument — famous. 1860 and 1864 — Elected and re-elected president. In other words, Keith Olbermann was not only wrong but so wide of the truth and the facts as to give Bill Clinton on Monica a good reputation. Sharron Angle, on the other hand, was right. Making her remark 100 percent factually correct. Lincoln ran 13 times, according to biographer Sandburg, not eight as Olbermann said with such assured smugness. Lincoln lost not once, as Mr. Drama Queen asserted, but, again according to the Pulitzer winning biographer, five times. Once for the state assembly, once for Congress, once for vice-president and twice for U.S. Senator. The latter Senate race famous to this day.  So, on Tuesday evening, Olbermann selectively edited and cherry picked from a Rush Limbaugh radio transcript to make the conservative talk show host look like a racist AND completely misrepresented history to smear a Republican senatorial candidate. All in a day’s work for a liberal shill at MSNBC I guess.  Adding insult to injury, the “Countdown” host Wednesday called former Alaska governor Sarah Palin an idiot. You were saying, Keith?

The Link Between Record-Breaking Global Heat Waves and Climate Change

Image via Climate Progress Can you say that a particularly massive heatwave — or any single weather event, for that matter — is caused by climate change? Nope. Now, is there a link between a trend of record-breaking hot temperatures over the years and climate change? Indeed. There’s a fine line between the two, and it’s a fine line that makes it tough for the media to successfully discuss the correlation between, say, a miserable heatwave that’s currently sweeping the East Coast and the greater phenomenon of human-caused global warming. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘Last Airbender 2’ Will Be ‘Darker,’ M. Night Shyamalan Says

Sequel has not been green-lit, but writer/director already has two scripts in the works. By Brian Warmoth M. Night Shyamalan Photo: MTV News If a $53.3 million holiday weekend proves successful enough to keep M. Night Shyamalan around for a “Last Airbender” sequel, he knows what he wants to do — and he wants to do it darkly. Asked about his intentions going forward, the “Sixth Sense” and “Signs” director confirmed that he has much of “The Last Airbender 2” already mapped out. “I do,” Shyamalan told MTV News. “The third is more ambiguous, but the second one, I’ve written a draft that I’m really happy with and is darker and richer, and it has a wonderful antagonist in it in Azula, who’s kind of like our only real, pure antagonist in the series, so I’m excited about that.” His description of the story implies that Summer Bishil’s character from the film currently in theaters has plenty left to do onscreen as Aang (Noah Ringer) continues his fight against the Fire Nation. As far as what the story will be about and which characters could enter or exit the cast, those decisions may have to wait for Paramount’s decision on the franchise’s fate. If things proceed, Shyamalan has already shared a few details that could play into his intentions. The elite female Kyoshi Warriors , for instance, will likely play a larger role. “I probably won’t show the Kyoshi Warriors because I want to save them for the second movie, because I’m going to have to introduce them all over again,” he said while explaining what would and would not show up in the “Last Airbender” DVD and Blu-Ray’s deleted scenes . The characters were initially included in the first film, but circumstances and editing decisions eventually moved them out of the spotlight. “We shot [the scene] and [the Kyoshi Warriors] were amazing, and we spent an unbelievable amount of time choreographing them,” he said. “And they just distracted from the movie, because the movie wasn’t about them.” Given that he became much more comfortable with filming in 3-D during his first “Airbender,” another round of 3-D filming with the same crew would make sense unless Hollywood’s affection for the evolving medium changes overnight. In the meantime, Shyamalan sounds like he’s ready to go if and when an “Airbender” sequel gets the go-ahead. Lil’ Kim, Rihanna Is ‘In The Works’

‘I’m 90 percent sure that a song is probably in the works,’ Kim says. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lil’ Kim Photo: Getty Images Hip-hop diva Lil’ Kim is looking to collaborate with pop princess Rihanna. The MC recently opened up to Australia’s Lifelounge about her dream collaboration and singled out the chart-topping singer as an artist she’d like to work with. “I’m a huge [Rihanna] fan and she’s a friend of mine, so I’m almost guessing — if I had to guess — I’m 90 percent sure that a song is probably in the works,” Kim told the magazine’s website , hinting that she and Rihanna may have already touched base about teaming up on a record. However, Kim said that she’s not stressing the potential collaboration and wants to spring the track on the world if, and when, the time is right. “I look at it this way: If it happens, it happens. And it should be a surprise. It shouldn’t be something that people are anticipating, or have their own personal opinions on it before it even comes out,” the rapper said. Whether or not a Kim-Rihanna collabo jumps off, the MC maintained that she has a lot of love for the singer. “I think she’s great.” The potential collaboration is just another Lil’ Kim match-up that has been thrown around. Earlier this year, Ludacris said that Kim and Nicki Minaj should hook up for a track and end the drama between the two femcees. “I think if Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj do a record together it’s gonna kill the entire industry,” Luda told MTV News last month . “You don’t have that many women in the industry so the lane is wide open.” Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: ‘The Last Airbender’ Related Artists Rihanna Lil’ Kim

Drake Visits Grandmother In Exclusive ‘Better Than Good Enough’ Outtake

Photographer Jonathan Mannion recalls Drake telling grandmother that he had become a millionaire. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV News After Drake inked his record deal with the Universal Motown family (in partnership with Lil Wayne’s Young Money label), the Toronto lyricist visited his grandmother shortly after to share the good news. Photographer Jonathan Mannion was present, shooting images of the pair, and recalled the moment Drake and his grandmother had, which he explains in this exclusive outtake from the MTV documentary “Drake: Better Than Good Enough.” “We went to visit his grandmother in a nursing home,” Mannion says. “It was really a conversation between them and they were talking about how they used to do crossword puzzles and learn words together. That kind of stuff. And she was like, ‘It’s really paying off now.’ ” Mannion described his favorite shot from the visit, which depicts an exchange of affection between the two; he said the image hit home for him how rooted in family the So Far Gone star really was. According to Mannion, Drake notified his grandmother that he signed his record deal and now had millions of dollars in his account. He asked her what she wanted, telling her that since he finally made it he could now buy her anything in the world she desired “You have a million dollars!,” she said, Mannion recalled. The rapper corrected her, responded that he has millions in the bank now and she could have anything she wants. “How about a hug and kiss?,” she told him. “He just leaned over and kissed her on the forehead,” Mannion says, as he shows the image on his computer. “It was the sweetest moment. That, I think, is a real reference to how grounded [Drake] is.” MTV followed Drake in the weeks leading up to the release of his new LP, Thank Me Later. The “Drake: Better Than Good Enough” documentary will re-air on MTV Saturday at 12 p.m. and 9 p.m., Sunday at 9 a.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. on MTV2. Tupac And Biggie Would Have Reconciled, Naughty By Nature’s Treach Says

Tupac’s close friend says ‘Pac and the Notorious B.I.G. ‘would have sat down’ and hashed out their issues. By Mawuse Ziegbe Naughty by Nature’s Treach Photo: MTV News The purported rivalry between hip-hop camps on the East and West coasts came to a tragic end when hip-hop icons Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. were killed at the height of the hype. To fans and the media, ‘Pac and Big were figureheads of the hip-hop movements on their respective coasts and fierce adversaries. However, ‘Pac’s close friend and Naughty By Nature MC Treach maintains that both rappers were just homies caught up in some drama and that, given some time, they would have hashed it out. “It only needed some time before ‘Pac and Big would have sat down, period, ’cause they was boys before that,” Treach told MTV News’ Sway the day before what would have been Tupac’s 39th birthday . “They would have sat down.” Treach said the friction between the two stars stemmed from Tupac’s 1994 shooting in New York. Although ‘Pac didn’t think Biggie was behind the attack, the rapper did think the Brooklyn hip-hop heavyweight should have looked out for him. “He really thought when he got shot the first time, that … not Big set it up or anything, just Big didn’t tell him who did it,” Treach told MTV News. “In his heart, he was like, ‘The homie know who did it.’ ” Treach said B.I.G. simply tried to avoid the drama and wasn’t aiming to undermine his friend. “Biggie might have wanted to just stay out of it, like, ‘I don’t know nothing.’ [Tupac] was like, ‘Yo, man, just put your ear to the street. Let me know who hit me up.’ ” Treach also said Tupac had an idea who engineered the assault but was upset that people he felt were in his corner didn’t hook him up with any info. ” ‘Pac already was knowing. He was like, ‘I know who got me. I want to see who I can trust now,’ ” Treach said, adding that ‘Pac lost faith in a lot of people, not just Biggie. “Now he was on non-trust mode with [everybody], except a chosen few. He was like, ‘I don’t trust nobody.’ ” While ‘Pac was definitely riled by the shooting and what he perceived as betrayal by many of his peers, Treach said the heat from the East Coast/ West Coast rivalry didn’t actually phase the Cali star. “Naughty by Nature and Bad Boy was on tour together. I’m on the [phone] with ‘Pac regularly, talking to Suge [Knight] regularly. Puff and them, they wasn’t leaving the hotel, they wasn’t going to parties, it was secret service,” Treach said. While the Bad Boy stars were shaken up, Treach said Tupac wasn’t worried about the East Coast/ West Coast hype. “[‘Pac and Suge] was laughing, like, ‘We ain’t come looking for them. We damn sure wouldn’t come out there and mess y’all money up. They on tour with y’all.’ [They] wasn’t mad at me, like, ‘Oh, you on tour with them.’ None of what the media was portraying was true.” Treach said he feels the supposed feud didn’t originate with any actual hip-hop beef, but instead was a product of media sensationalism. “I knew it was gonna be some real serious consequences when I saw the Vibe magazine cover, and it was Puffy and Biggie on it, and the title on it was ‘East vs. West.’ I said, ‘Somebody gonna die.’ That murdered the game right there. Just that cover being out there and that sh– put on the stands. Because now you got n—as in the ‘hood, like, ‘Oh, it’s on?’ They don’t got sh– to live for. They bang for a living. ‘Oh, let me see one of them n—as out here. It’s on.’ ” Do you think Tupac and Biggie would have mended fences by now if they were both alive? Let us know in the comments. Smoking Pot Doesn’t Affect the Way You Drive

Researchers from Hartford Hospital in Connecticut and the University of Iowa had 85 subjects participate in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial where they were tested on a driving simulator before and 30 minutes after smoking a marijuana cigarette. The researchers found there were no differences between the performance of marijuana smokers and those who were given a placebo in either the simulator's baseline driving segment or its collision-avoidance scenarios. In fact, the only difference between the two groups was that the subjects who got the real stuff were more likely to decrease their speed during certain parts of the simulation. http://www.asylum.com/2010/06/02/university-of-iowa-marijuana-pot-herb-doesnt-im… added by: unimatrix0
