Maybe that’s why they seemed to be sporting WTF grins when they hit the carpet for T-Mobile’s Sidekick 4G launch party in Beverly Hills on Wednesday night. Perhaps it was seeing the latest “Dancing With the Stars” cast members on the same carpet or attempting to talk over the thumping base from the DJ inside, but you got the impression that the indie band was a little bit outside of its element. But hey, T-Mobile has some rock cred on its side — after all, Blink-182 chose the last Sidekick launch event to play their first reunion show. And the Strokes had the same duties on Wednesday night — playing to Hollywood’s young and beautiful. So when it comes to scaling down their set at a party like this, the band has conflicting views on playing new material versus the familiar hits. “I guess me personally, I prefer playing new songs, but the crowd prefers old songs, reaction-wise,” singer Julian Casablancas told MTV News. “So it’s always weird ’cause you could play a song that’s mind-blowing and they’d just be like ‘wow,’ shedding a tear, but they’ll be silent. So you’ll think, ‘That sucks and we’ll never do that again.’ And then you play like an old hit that you played a thousand times, it’s kind of boring, but they’re loving it. So you’re like, ‘Let’s do that!’ ” Speaking of even newer songs, the Strokes, who recently played the South by Southwest festival in Texas, confirmed that they’re starting work next week on the follow up to Angles, which they released just a month ago. But Casablancas admits that they’ve gotten “zero far” on the new project. Whether it will share anything sonically with Angles, Casablancas said, “I don’t know, we haven’t even started. He also conducts most of his business from the backseat of his Lincoln, bringing new life to the phrase “wheelin’ and dealin’.” When MTV News caught up with McConaughey during the press day for the film, we learned some fun facts about the actor’s past. First, he loves lawyers and debate and wanted to be a lawyer until his junior year in college (when he switched his major to film production). Second, McConaughey revealed that he didn’t have to stretch too far to harness the wheelin’ and dealin’ aspects of his character. “I come from a long line of salesmen,” McConaughey said. “My father and my older brother are pipe salesmen. That’s wheelin’ and dealin’. I’ve always appreciated good salesmen. There’s an art to selling. You play a different part with different clients. You don’t talk to the head of the biker gang the same way you talk to the rich father in Beverly Hills or the rich mother in Beverly Hills who wants her son off and has a million dollars to put up for it; you talk to those people differently.” McConaughey went on to say that salesmen wear different hats as part of the hustle involved in the business. “You don’t show all your cards. Always have a joker up your sleeve,” he said, flashing that famous sly smile. We then asked if that bit of advice is part of his philosophy about life as well. “[It’s] pretty good to have a joker up your sleeve, it helps,” he said. “You might not need it, but there are times where you go, ‘Oh, there it is. Now former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham is finally getting the final compliment for her closets full of high design: a little girl to share them with. Victoria and her soccer playing husband David Beckham announced that their fourth child will be a girl, according to a report originally on ESPN . Due in January, the child will join older brothers Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz. “Obviously, we’re very lucky to be expecting again, and this is the first time I’m going to say it: It’s a little girl,” Beckham told assembled Galaxy fans at an event for the Los Angeles based Major League Soccer franchise. “We’re still in shock. Obviously, having three boys, you kind of expect another one, so finding out a little girl is in there is surprising, but, obviously, we are over the moon. Our three boys are happy and excited, and Victoria is doing well.” The pair didn’t know the sex of the baby until very recently, with Victoria telling reporters in February that she would be happy with a child of either gender. “We know what to do with boys [and my other children are] excited about having a little brother to teach how to play soccer,” she told USA Today at an event to promote her new fashion line. “But, if it’s a girl, we’d be over the moon as well.” The former “Posh Spice” and her husband currently live in Beverly Hills, where the 36-year-old David is in the final year of his much criticized five-year contract with the Galaxy. Twice a runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year, Beckham became the highest paid player in the league when he moved from Real Madrid to sign his deal in 2007.
