Effort underway to remove tons of fat from London’s sewers | Raw Story

A team of workers sporting breathing apparatus and carrying shovels has started clearing around 1,000 tonnes of fat from sewers around London's Leicester Square, a water company said Tuesday. Cooking fat being poured down drains under one of the city's main tourist attractions is thought to be causing blockages. Leicester Square borders London's Chinatown and its bustling restaurants and cafes, as well as the West End and Soho entertainment districts. The clean-up, which could take up to two months, is described as the biggest ever of its kind by Thames Water, the firm organising it. Danny Brackley, one of those involved in the clean-up, said they could not even access the sewers at first as they were blocked by a four foot (1.2 metre) thick wall of solid fat. added by: bansheewail

How Does The Price is Right’s ‘Perfect Bid’ Coup Rank Among Game Shows’ Greatest Scandals?

The Price is Right is more than a game show. It’s one of our richest traditions, an Easter-colored riot of sound effects, Plinko chips, Jenny-O products, Barker’s Beauties, and importance. We need its aggressively nostalgic appeal for sustenance, and our kids need its Jiffy Pop-sponsored comfort for sick days. But a new Esquire article sheds light on recent contestant Terry Kniess’s perfect showcase bid and casts some doubt (and a little applause) on the staggering perfection with which he bid $23,743 on a karaoke machine, pool table, and camper. Impressive, yes, but did jilted ex-producer Roger Dobkowitz clue in Kniess on the price? Instead of figuring out this mess, we’re ranking Kniess’s perfect bid as one of the five biggest game show scandals in history. Is it the biggest one ever? Join us for a historical rundown of the greatest game show scandals, hoaxes, and mysteries.

Ex-officer found guilty of manslaughter in Oakland subway shooting

(CNN) — A former police officer who is white was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter Thursday in the killing of an unarmed black man in Oakland, California. Johannes Mehserle, who was a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer at the time of the incident, was convicted in the shooting of 22-year-old Oscar Grant on a California train platform on January 1, 2009. Mehserle, who was on duty at the time, said at the trial that he intended to draw and fire his Taser rather than his gun, CNN affiliate KTVU reported. The shooting was captured on a bystander's cell-phone video camera. The video was widely circulated, and it spurred several protests and riots in and around Oakland. added by: TimALoftis

Repeal The Drinking Age

Somehow, and no one seems to even imagine how, this country managed to survive and thrive before 1984 without a national minimum drinking age. Before that, the drinking question was left to the states. In the 19th century, and looking back even before — prepare yourself to imagine horrific anarchistic nightmares — there were no drinking laws anywhere, so far as anyone can tell. The regulation of drinking and age was left to society, which is to say families, churches, and communities with varying sensibilities who regulated such things with varying degrees of intensity. Probably some kids drank themselves silly — and we all know that this doesn't happen now (wink, wink) — but many others learned to drink responsibly from an early age, even drinking bourbon for breakfast. Really, it is only because we are somehow used to it that we accept the complete absurdity of a national law that prohibits the sale of beer, wine, and liquor to anyone under the age of 21. This is a restriction unknown in the developed world. Most countries set 18 as the limit, and countries like Germany and Austria allow 16-year-olds to buy wine and beer. In the home of the brave, the police are busting up teen parties, shutting down bars, hectoring restaurants, fining convenience stores, and otherwise bullying people into clean living. Cronyism by US Senate Candidate Dr Mike Beitler

Perhaps the biggest problem in America today is cronyism. Cronyism is big business in bed with big government. Big businesses buy influence through their campaign contributions, including political action committee (PAC) contributions. Small business owners and entrepreneurs do not have the money to hire professional lobbyists or to fund a PAC. Big businesses have the money to hire professional lobbyists and to fund PACs. The professional lobbyists hired by big businesses work to pass burdensome regulations to crush smaller competitors. The big business PACs make contributions to political candidates (mostly incumbents) in exchange for favors. Lobbying for big business has become a big business itself. One look at K Street in Washington, DC will give you an indication of the extent of this form of corruptio….. http://www.beitlerforussenate.org/posts/cronyism added by: shanklinmike

Kristin Cavallari Recalls Her Best And Worst ‘Hills’ Moments

‘I think my biggest thing was the first episode … I really came in with a bang,’ she tells MTV News of season-five appearance. By Jocelyn Vena Kristin Cavallari Photo: Christina Garibaldi/ MTV News Kristin Cavallari entered “The Hills” like a human storm during one of the show’s most pivotal episodes. Just as Speidi were finally set to tie the knot for real (and Lauren Conrad to say a final farewell), Cavallari walked into the church and the MTV reality series hasn’t been the same since. Not only has the blond star managed, in just under two seasons, to make moves on both Justin Bobby and her ex Brody Jenner, but she also stirred up trouble with Justin’s on-again, off-again GF Audrina Patridge, as well as with Brody’s ladies Jayde and McKaela. (Kristin even had a little hookup with gal pal Stacie.) So between falling in love and making enemies, we wondered what stood out the most to Kristin. MTV News asked the show’s leading lady to give us her most memorable “Hills” moment. “Gosh, top moment … I think I had a couple,” she told us, recalling her rooftop fight with Audrina over Justin during the premiere episode of the second half of season five. “I think my biggest thing was the first episode where I really came in with a bang,” she laughed. “And it was like, ‘All right, clearly I’m back.’ ” These days, everything’s fine between Kristin and Audrina; the two ladies managed to kiss and make up, so to speak. However, one lady Cavallari said she wishes she’d never actually kissed is her bartender pal. “I think that’s sort of my I-wish-I-didn’t moment was when I made out with Stacie in Vegas,” she explained. “That was one episode I had to call my dad and say, ‘Dad, sorry — this is going to be your least favorite episode.’ ” It was a moment that not only surprised viewers at home, but her father too. “He was like, ‘Oh, great,’ and then when he called me — sometimes he’ll call me after every episode just to talk about it — he didn’t say one word about the episode. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. … It’s probably a bad thing,” she laughed. Despite that one regret, Cavallari admitted she’s never been shy about her bad-girl ways. In fact, she always fully embraces them, right through to “The Hills” series finale on Tuesday . “I think it’s funny,” she laughed about her carefree attitude when it comes to boys and, well, girls. “Honestly, I think it’s fun to play the bad girl, and no one remembers the nice girl, you know?” Are you sad to see “The Hills” coming to an end. What’s your favorite Kristin moment from the series? Tell us in the comments! Join MTV News all week as we look back at the best of “The Hills” and celebrate the series finale with the cast on Tuesday, July 13.
