When Bike Sharing Falters (and Why We Can’t Let It)

Photo credit by batega via flickr. In its early days, Barcelona’s Bicing seemed like an unparalleled success . With 400 stations and 3,000 of the squat, burly red-and-white bikes stationed around the city, Bicing quickly became part of Barcelona’s big city atmosphere and was enthusiastically received by inhabitants. But after five years, something scary started to happen, in addition to the vandalism and

Female Cyclists Demand Respect, and Kisses from Hot Men

Image credit: Joe Plommer/ The Mule Bar Girls April may believe we need more girls on bikes , but there is no doubt that gender politics and cycling can be an explosive mix. When I wrote about podium girls—or the practice of bike races employing female cyclists to look pretty and kiss men —the response from our readers was mixed to say the least. Some felt it was just part of the culture, others fe… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Bike-Happy, Ped-Friendly Cities Less Obese

Photo credit Kiwi Flickr . Cars make you fat . That’s more or less the message noted researcher John Pucher has tirelessly delivered, making the case for cycling and walking – “active transportation” – as a way for cities to deal with creeping obesity rates and climbing health costs. Now, in a new analysis of U.S., European, and Australian cities, Pucher and his colleagues press the point home even a little further by showing that cities with the highest percentage of trips by foot and by bike have the lowest le… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Toronto Gets Bixi Bike System, Sponsored by Dutch Bank ING

Like American cities, Toronto is taxed-starved to the point that a couple of years ago it couldn’t find $75K to save its community yellow bike system. But its gotta be, as a former mayor used to say, “World Class”, so if Paris and London and Montreal have bike share systems, so does Toronto. It is bringing Montreal’s Bixi system to town, or a small portion thereof. Since Toronto can’t even pay for civic amenities like garbage cans and bus shelters, let alone bike share systems, it will be sponsored, in this case by the… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Solar Powered Bike Bags for Energy Savvy Cyclists

Image via The Red Ferret Journal Sticking solar cells on bikes for supplemental power is not exactly new, but the idea is finally finding more fashionable forms. Well, sort of. This small bag fits onto handle bars or the bike bar for gathering a charge while riding. It doesn’t directly charge anything in particular, like safety lights, but that could be a boon for riders who want to gather energy for more than just their bike accessories. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

The Fatwa Against Female Cyclists

This oil painting by Vita Di Milano is from “Women and Wheels” dedicated, according to the artist, to “women’s freedom from the dogmas and the doctrines of religion.” Female cyclists have a hard enough time – we are generally a bit more safety-conscious and reticent when it comes to getting out on city streets , and the athletic among us who do fearlessly dive into bike racing and other cycling sports do so with less support or acknowledgment from the rest of the sporting world than men cyclists get. So … Read the full story on TreeHugger
