Critically Endangered Indian Vultures Bred for First Time in Captivity

White-rumped vulture, photo: Lip Kee Yap via flickr Some hope for three species of endangered Indian vultures: Conservationists have successfully bred all of them in captivity for the first time. Considering that at current rates of decline–brought about in no small part because of a painkiller used in cattle (more on that below)–these vultures would be globally extinct within 10 years, the importance of this seems clear. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

BP Cleanup Crews, in Louisiana, Have Trampled Pelican Nests and Eggs, And Have Killed Newly-Hatched Chicks By Crushing Them – Graphic Photo

By the CNN Wire Staff June 16, 2010 9:55 a.m. EDT Photo: The nesting grounds of brown pelicans and other birds have been affected, the Plaquemines Parish president says. Venice, Louisiana (CNN) — Crews cleaning up the oil in one Louisiana parish have trampled the nests and eggs of birds including the brown pelican, which came off the endangered species list last year, the head of the parish said Wednesday. Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said the parish doesn't want to turn away contractors, but he called for more care when crews work in the sensitive wetlands. He said officials recently found broken eggs and crushed chicks on Queen Bess Island, near Grand Isle. Plastic bags containing snare boom were “recklessly placed” around the island without consideration for wildlife. In one picture released by the parish, a plastic bag was on top of a nest containing broken speckled eggs. Dozens of people, including experienced veterinarians, have been going to the area from all over the country to help with the affected wildlife, the parish said. Nungesser met with the Humane Society of the United States and asked it to work with contractors who are cleaning the birds to come up with a better way to enlist the help of volunteers, the parish said. “We want to improve our comfort level of knowing someone is out there looking for these birds and other animals — doing all they can to save them,” Nungesser said on the parish website. “The people BP sent out to clean up oil trampled the nesting grounds of brown pelicans and other birds,” he said. “Pelicans just came off the endangered species list in November of last year. They already have the oil affecting their population during their reproduction time, now we have the so-called clean up crews stomping eggs. “The lack of urgency and general disregard for Louisiana's wetlands and wildlife is enough to make you sick,” he said. added by: EthicalVegan

Bizarre Bird Smuggling Case Lands Two Men in Jail

Photo: AP / Department of Justice Last April, airport authorities became suspicious of a traveler arriving to LAX from Vietnam after noticing bird droppings on his socks and feathers peeking from the cuffs of his pants. A closer inspection of the man, Sony Dong, revealed fourteen Asian songbirds strapped to the his legs, valued at around $1000 each on the black market. Over fifty more birds were found when Dong’s residence was searched, and police would later arrest the smuggling operation’s ringleader. But after pleading guilty in court, the two men have been sentenced to jail for their role in the

Natural Harvest: A Collection of Semen-Based Recipes

Semen is not only nutritious, but it also has a wonderful texture and amazing cooking properties. Like fine wine and cheeses, the taste of semen is complex and dynamic. Semen is inexpensive to produce and is commonly available in many, if not most, homes and restaurants. Despite all of these positive qualities, semen remains neglected as a food. added by: GrrlScientist

One Awesome Bird Feeder Hat and Two Regrettable Ones (Video)

Filed under: Videos , Fashion , Tech , Animals If you want to see a hummingbird up close, you could use binoculars. But why would you, though, when you can wear a dang bird feeder on your face and let hummingbirds eat from it? In terms of life’s OMG experiences, this is right up there. It may not be as dangerous as climbing Everest or jumping out of a plane, but … hummingbirds! On your face! The special wearable bird feeders cost 80 bucks, but once you load one up with delicious sugar water, you’ll have hummingbirds eating from right between your eyes. Plus, the mask will make you look kind of like a Transformer , which is never a bad thing. After the jump, check out a video of this awesome birdfeeder in action and see two other bird feeder hats that totally fail. Actually pretty cool, right? Well, these other, more regrettable wearable birdfeeders aren’t quite up to par. This hat was posted on Regretsy, which is definitely our favorite website about people’s horrifying DIY creations. It’s definitely not stylish and it doesn’t appear to be functional as a bike helmet, though it juuuust might work as a bird feeder. This bird feeder hat isn’t specifically for hummingbirds, but that doesn’t really matter, because I’m not sure I would want to come anywhere near this if I were any type of bird. In fact, maybe they’d sell more of these if they re-branded them as scarecrows. That finch just has to be plastic. Share via:// L.A. Times Continue reading
