This is kinda gross: This bizarre new range of shoes may make the owner feel like they have one foot in the grave – they are made from dead animals. Designer Iris Schieferstein, 45, spends months creating high heel horse hooves, stilettos from snake skins and sandals sculpted from doves. In one particularly weird pair, the rearing doves have been stuffed and the and the wearer has to slide their toes between the bird’s legs. The horse boots feature the hoof still intact with a bone used for a heel. Iris collects the dead animals from her local butcher in Berlin, Germany, including dead horses, which are used for sausages in the country. Flip it to see more of the shoes….
Film shows what happens when an oil-drilling team goes missing, and no one comes looking for them. By Kevin P. Sullivan Liam Neeson in “The Grey” Photo: Open Road Films In most movies where the main characters find themselves stranded after a shipwreck or a plane crash, the survivors take solace in the fact that someone must be looking for them. “The Grey” isn’t like most movies. In the new film, which hits theaters Friday, Liam Neeson plays a member of an oil-drilling team that gets into a plane crash somewhere near the Arctic Circle during their journey home. Many die in the incident, and the remaining members soon realize that no one is coming for them. Unless you count the wolves. Neeson told MTV News that the rougher edges of the characters in “The Grey” are what make the film something new and resonant. “They’re definitely flotsam and jetsam of society. One of them says after the mishap with the airplane that ‘Nobody’s going to care about us,’ ” Neeson said. “Nobody’s going to send out reconnaissance planes to try and find these guys because who cares? You know?” During the course of the film, one of the characters makes reference to “Alive,” the Ethan Hawke film about a rugby team stranded in the Andes. Neeson’s co-star Frank Grillo described how their film and co-writer/director Joe Carnahan took a different road. “The element of survival is different because these are just much different men, as opposed to being civilized,” he said. “They’re not real civilized guys, and I think that’s what Joe [Carnahan] tries to show you in the beginning of the film.” Even if the realization that no one will look for these men is devastating, Neeson believes that’s ultimately what keeps the characters going. “It’s from that sadness that they realize who they are and what they are and how they’re just a speck of dust in society,” Neeson said. “But that somehow empowers them to continue on with this crazy journey for freedom and solace and to get out of this predicament. It actually gives them strength, the fact that they’re nondescript.” Will you see “The Grey” this weekend? Leave your comment below!
Nas, Snoop and Game have all paid homage to other MCs with body art. By Gil Kaufman Rihanna Photo: Rihanna/Twitter Rihanna has raised a lot of eyebrows this week with her latest body modification: a tattoo that reads “Thug Life” , in honor of late hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur. While ‘Pac had the words emblazoned across his abdomen, Rihanna opted to write them across her knuckles in what appears to be glow-in-the-dark ink. Say what you will about whether the pop princess is living the kind of rising-up-from-the-streets life Shakur was honoring by splashing the name of his crew across his stomach, but she joins a long list of musicians who’ve used body art to pay homage to fallen homeys or musical inspirations. When hip-hip hookmaster Nate Dogg died last year, his old friend and collaborator Snoop Dogg had an image of Nate’s face with the legend “All Doggs Go to Heaven” written on his arm as a remembrance of the G-funk singer. And while Faith Evans once proudly bore a heart-shaped tattoo that read “B.I.G.” in honor of her then-husband Biggie Smalls. (After the couple split, however, she added some ink so it read “B.I.G. FAYE.”) After his best friend and fellow D12 member was shot and killed in 2006, Eminem filled the space on his left forearm with a giant “Proof” tat encircled with flames. Fellow Detroit MC Kid Rock has the name of his former bandmate, Joe C., on his body as well, in honor of the hype man who passed away in 2000. Drake got in the game last year when he reportedly added a portrait of late singer Aaliyah to his collection of back ink. Well before that, Nas paid a sideways tribute to Tupac with his “God’s Son” stomach piece, which paid homage to both the fallen MC and to Nasty Nas’ nickname. But an artist doesn’t need to have passed on to get the tribute treatment, as evidenced by D12 member Bizarre’s love letter to Nicki Minaj, which he added to his collection last year in the form of a head shot of the female MC rocking blue hair. And while Game is no stranger to face-to-toe ink, he made a serious commitment in 2009 when he got the logo from producer/rapper Pharrell’s Star Trak label on his arm while he worked with Williams on his The R.E.D. Album. What do you think of Rihanna’s knuckle tattoo? Sound off on our Facebook page! Related Photos Hip-Hop Celebrity Tribute Tattoos Related Artists Rihanna
Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern will put anything in his mouth, so perhaps it’s not a huge surprise that he’s not afraid to open it when it comes to Paula Deen. Deen’s controversial decision to hide her diabetes from her fans, then reveal it only in conjunction with shilling a diabetes-fighting drug, hasn’t sat well with many. Anthony Bourdain , for one. Zimmern, for another. The Travel Channel star revealed his thoughts on Deen to Anderson Cooper, saying the circumstances surrounding her diabetes diagnosis speak for themselves. “I famously came out last year against a whole bunch of cooks – not just Paula Deen – and what they cook and what they stand for,” Zimmern told Anderson. “I have a tremendous platform and responsibility to talk to people about issues, about sustainability and about health and wellness when it comes to food.” “I think it became a much more personal thing when she found out she had diabetes. I can’t judge what you do when you get that news, that’s up to Paula.” Asked if he would keep cooking fattening food, as Deen did for years, if he had received a similar diagnosis, the Bizarre Foods host answered diplomatically. “Personally, I change my diet every time I find out something new,” he said. “I famously tasted shark fin soup many years ago before we knew exactly what was going on with the harvesting of sharks. I’ve consequently come out against it.” “I make personal choices in my life and stand behind them.” “I am very much a person who likes to change with the times. Education is what it is all about,” he explained, declining to publicly condemn Deen. The general public, by and large, has not reacted as evenly. Deen is reportedly incredulous over the backlash she’s received since coming clean earlier this month, which has been considerable to say the least.
‘It’s still a very secret character that is very closely safeguarded, and it’s still in the design process,’ Andy Serkis says at Golden Globes. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andy Serkis at the 2012 Golden Globes Photo: Getty Images Motion-capture wizard Andy Serkis took some time off from filming “The Hobbit” to hit the red carpet at the 2012 Golden Globes , but it seems like he left all of his precious Middle-earth secrets back in New Zealand. When Serkis took some time to chat with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz, he refused to give any clue what the legendary dragon Smaug might look like on the big screen. “I can’t give any secrets away, none of those trade secrets,” Serkis said. “I can’t say that because actually it’s still under wraps.” In “The Hobbit,” Serkis reprises the role that made him a capture-performance all-star: Gollum. Additionally, he will step behind the camera as the director of the films’ second unit. An iconic character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythological world, Smaug is the impetus for all of the action in Peter Jackson’s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” prequel, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” Such a revered character is bound to come with a high level of security. Serkis suggested that there might be more to his own secrecy than just avoiding spoilers. According to the actor, Weta Workshop is still working on the creature’s look. “It’s still a very secret character that is very closely safeguarded, and it’s still in the design process,” he said. The little we do know about Smaug is more than enough to get us excited. Benedict Cumberbatch will voice Smaug in “The Hobbit” before going where no man has gone before as the villain in J.J. Abrams’ next “Star Trek.” Serkis said that with Cumberbatch as Smaug, audiences certainly have something to look forward to. “With an actor like Benedict Cumberbatch playing him, it will be extraordinary,” he said. MTV News reporter spends awards-show night chatting with George Clooney and chasing Lindsay Lohan and Diddy. By Josh Horowitz George Clooney at the 2012 Golden Globes Photo: Getty Images On Sunday, I covered my fourth (fifth? It’s all getting a bit fuzzy in my mid-30s) Golden Globes , and let me tell you, it was wild! I laughed with George Clooney, bro’d out with Michael Fassbender, ogled Michelle Williams’ trophy up close, and capped the night off with Diddy and Lindsay Lohan. I also was in bed eating a piece of cheesecake from room service before midnight. All of these things are true. Such is the bizarre event the Hollywood Foreign Press puts on every year. You’re a sketchy odd bunch, but you throw a hell of a party, guys! Thanks for the memories. I’ve been lucky enough to cover the Oscars and the entire awards-show circuit the past few years at MTV News, and it is a fantastically glamorous and surreal bubble filled with moments that bend the mind (it’s like “Inception” if everyone were pretty. Huh?). It’s also a job — meaning it’s filled with massive frustrations and insults, just as anyone experiences in their 9 to 5. Unfortunately for me, when I start whining about “Glee” star Cory Monteith racing by me at a party, ignoring my request for an interview, most people want to punch me in the face. I get it. I really do. But I can be as miserable as the next person (actually, I think I can be more miserable than the next person), and no one is going to take away my right to bitch about a pushy publicist who gives me an earful about her client I’d be a fool not to talk to. Nobody! I couldn’t bring you all with me to the Globes, unfortunately. Well, come on, where would I have put you? Really, be sensible! But I can give you a peek into some illuminating/ absurd/ just plain odd moments I experiences in my strange gig. George Clooney and I are best friends! George Clooney and I are not best friends. George Clooney doesn’t know my name. George Clooney is not inviting me to Lake Como. My wife and I are not going on a double date with him and his Amazonian girlfriend (seriously, was she in Avatar?). But George Clooney sure is good at seeming like you’re his best friend. I interviewed George a couple days ago at the Critics’ Choice red carpet (most notable for me calling him old and him taking my microphone away). And a few days before that, we talked to him in New York at the National Board of Review red carpet (’tis the season). When the Cloonster (I can call him that: We have an understanding) saw me Sunday night, moments before his Best Actor win, he said he was relieved I was wearing a tie tonight but I still need to do something about the scruff. Dreamy, right? BFFs! Actually, he’d combined me in his memory with a fellow MTV News-er, whom he’d talked to at the NBR in New York without the tie. It’s all good, George. You have a lot on your plate. See you at the Oscars. The night belonged to Fassbender’s member That doesn’t rhyme does it? I’m waiting for my flight home to New York (Al Roker is here!) and it will just have to do. Though Michael Fassbender didn’t win a prize for “Shame” Sunday night (see previous item on the Cloonster), he was a big topic in my red carpet interviews. Before I get to the silly stuff, let me just echo many by saying he delivers an awesome performance in “Shame” that should not be missed. Not good for a date night though. You’ve been warned. Anyway, Fassbender is an all-around cool guy in my experience. Exhibit A: When I sprung an impromptu After Hours on him a month ago wherein he had the task of identifying celebrities based solely on photos of their penises (he did really well!). Last night, he told me friends have been giving him grief for being a “penis expert.” Later in the night, Fassbender’s genitalia came up (so to speak) in my conversations with Ewan McGregor (of course) and Paris Hilton (er, also of course?). Let it be known that Paris has not seen “Shame” yet but seemed quite excited when I told her what she was in for. Lindsay Lohan and Diddy have odd ideas about interviews Where would one run into the likes of Ewan McGregor and the star of “The Hottie and the Nottie”? (I tease: Paris actually couldn’t have been sweeter). Why the Weinstein afterparty! Also Meryl Streep and Kim Kardashian. America really is a melting pot! The Weinstein party (er, the carpet heading into it — I never went in) was a festive one and why not? Harvey’s flicks dominated. Uggie, the dog from “The Artist,” seemed thrilled to be there. As did the whole gang from “My Week with Marilyn,” celebrating Michelle Williams’ win. But it was the random folks that were most fun to talk to. Why look, it’s Chris Tucker! Say, it’s a real housewife! And then there was Diddy swaggering as only he can down the carpet. I practically threw myself in his path so we could talk. He stopped, but he didn’t exactly talk. Instead he had his “spokesman” (Swizz Beatz by his side) answer all my questions. Whatever works, Diddy. And then there was the last interview of the night. Truth be told, it wasn’t much of an interview. Just as we were packing up our troubles, there she was: the one, the only, Lindsay Lohan. “This is it!” I screamed to no one in particular. Lindsay raced by, only to reconsider. I was going to get something good. Cloonster was but an amuse-bouche. This is what it was all about. Tears would be shed. Confessions made. That weird stripper movie of hers would be dissected. “So, I hear you’re playing Elizabeth Taylor soon?” I began. She smiled and grabbed my arm. And without a word, she was gone. Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press. Thank you. Check out the 2012 Golden Globes winners , and don’t miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet ! Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson may be pleading the indie case and fighting the unfortunate cultural fight to shore up interest in his cancer drama All Things Fall Apart , and the film’s marketing may have improved since its LOLtastic first teaser last year. But in the end, as the latest trailer will attest, the film still looks about as appealing as a ham-and-chemo sandwich — with extra ham, natch. I know what you’re thinking: ” Needs more ‘Yellow Ledbetter,’ ” amirite ? Don’t answer that. [Yahoo! via THR ]
Oscar nominated director David O. Russell ( The Fighter ) has had his share of controversial moments in the public eye, but this takes the cake, and then some: According to a police report filed with the Broward County Police Department in Florida, Russell inappropriately groped his 19-year-old adoptive pre-op transgender niece while they were working out last week. Hit the jump for details if you dare, because this reaches a level of bizarre that can be a wee bit difficult to wrap your head around. An investigation is underway into the bizarre family incident, which Russell insists was innocent and consensual. But he’s at least admitted that the incident did happen. And the event seems to have gone down as follows, as TMZ reports, while Russell and his niece were doing abdominal exercises: The niece — who does NOT have a blood relation to Russell — told cops they began to talk about her breasts … and how certain hormones she’s taking have made them larger. According to the report, the niece claims Russell then “put his hands under [her] top and felt both breasts.” Cops say the woman said she felt “uncomfortable” … but admitted she “did not ask him to stop at any time.” Investigators later contacted Russell … and according to the report, the director confirmed he DID touch his niece’s breasts … but only after she gave him permission. Cops say Russell explained that during the conversation about her chest, the niece informed him that one of her breasts was bigger than the other. The official report says … Russell told cops his niece then “allowed [him] to feel both of [her] breasts.” So… yeah. According to Russell’s rep, “”David O. Russell emphatically denies any wrongdoing and has cooperated fully with the authorities.” We’ll have to wait and see how this one shakes out. In the least, it makes yelling at Lily Tomlin look like a totally normal tea party. And despite headlines like ” David O. Russell Fingered in Quasi-Incestuous, Transsexual Groping Claim ,” it’s not quite as incestuous as the setup of Russell’s feature debut Spanking the Monkey , so there’s that. Ever since seeing those little un-smiley photo of Blanket Jackson at the Michael Jackson tribute concert in the U.K. last month , we’ve been a little curious about what the Jackson kids’ lives are really like now that their dad is gone. Apparently, we weren’t the only ones wondering. The Daily Mail’s “Mail On Sunday” published a new article today offering the first in-depth (albeit indirect) look at how MJ’s babies are really doing. Until now, only sketchy details have been available about the Jackson children, but today, after interviewing several sources close to the Jackson family, The Mail on Sunday can reveal the first detailed picture of their lives. Within the family, Prince and Paris are now seen as the great hope of carrying on the Jackson entertainment dynasty. There is even talk in Hollywood that they are considering an offer to appear in their own TV reality show. Given the bizarre nature of their upbringing – they often stumbled upon their father passed out on the bathroom floor or in his bedroom due to his intake of drugs – Prince and Paris appear to be surprisingly normal. But Blanket is a seriously withdrawn child. ‘He is shy, speaks very little and seems to be more shell-shocked than his siblings,’ said a family acquaintance. When Michael was alive, the children were educated at home. But now the two older ones attend Buckley School – one of the oldest co-educational day schools in Los Angeles, with fees of $33,500 (£21,000) a year. The Jackson children travel to and from the private school in a phalanx of four-wheel-drive vehicles with their bodyguards. Paris plays on the Buckley flag football team – its only female member – and Prince sings in school performances. ‘They’re down-to-earth kids, not full of themselves, not pretentious,’ says Diane Dimond, author of Be Careful Who You Love: Inside The Michael Jackson Case. ‘They don’t wear $500 sneakers and, except for their father’s trial, they don’t watch TV. ‘Of course, a staff of three maids, a full-time chef and a round-the-clock security detail looks after them.’ The children live with their grandmother Katherine in a sprawling, six-bedroom mansion set in 14 acres. It was once owned by Jose and Kitty Menendez, who were famously shot dead in 1989 by their sons at their other residence in Beverly Hills.
