Mo’ne Davis who covered Sports Illustrated in 2014 after becoming the first female to pitch in a Little League World Series win and to throw a shutout post-season, is attending Hampton University next fall. The Philadelphia Tribune reports that Mo’Ne selected Hampton over Bethune-Cookman University, Southern University, Coppin State University, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Pennsylvania. She was attracted to the HBCU’s Scripps Howard School of Journalism and will apparently major in some field of communications. Source: Patrick Foto / Getty Black Man Falsely Arrested When Banks Believes Paycheck Is Fake Add this to the list of things that Black folks are not allowed to do in America. We can’t even work hard for our money and cash our check without being arrested. A story in Cleveland19 reports that Paul McCowns had been working at new job for three before he finally got his first paycheck. When he went to Huntington Bank to cash his earnings he was asked for two forms of ID, which he provided. He also was asked to give his fingerprint, which he did. Then McCowns was told that his check was fugazi after tellers were unable to reach the electric company to verify it. Here’s what happened next: “I get in my truck and the squad car pull in front of me and he says get out the car,” McCowns said. What he didn’t know is that as he was leaving the bank, employees called 9-1-1 on him. Cleveland 19 News obtained a copy of the 9-1-1 call and police report. “He’s trying to cash a check and the check is fraudulent. It does not match our records,” said the teller to a 9-1-1 operator. The operator asked the teller: “Does he know you called 9-1-1?” The teller responded: “No.” *insert Mykelti Williamson Waiting To Exhale “You ragged b!t¢h” meme here* McCowns was then arrested until the police could make contact with his employer. Upon confirmation and finding of fraud, McCowns was released and cashed his check the next day at another bank. He fully believes he was racially profiled. Huntington had this to say: “We sincerely apologize to Mr. McCowns for this extremely unfortunate event. We accept responsibility for contacting the police as well as our own interactions with Mr. McCowns. Anyone who walks into a Huntington branch should feel welcomed. Regrettably, that did not occur in this instance and we are very sorry. We hold ourselves accountable to the highest ethical standards in how we operate, hire and train colleagues, and interact with the communities we have the privilege of serving.” The bank also says that there have been 11 fraudulent checks to come through that branch recently and tellers were overeager. Yeah. Sure.

So imagine a Black mom from the Bronx getting ready to take her kid to school then noticing that someone is already in the driver’s seat. ABC 7 reports: 49-year-old woman had auto-started her 2005 Honda Pilot, parked outside her New York City apartment in Melrose, at around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. When she walked downstairs with her son to take him to school, she noticed someone was already in the driver’s seat. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Bernado Santiago, was toying with the ignition, attempting to get the car moving. But the gag is, the woman still had the key in her possession. So she opened the driver door, yanked Santiago out and held him down until police arrived. She got a few hits in, too — as she should. The 19-year old has been charged with attempted grand larceny, petit larceny and criminal stolen possession of stolen property

After the comedian alarmed friends and fans over the weekend with social media posts stating that he’s struggling with his mental state and has no desire to live anymore…Ariana rushed down to 30 Rockefeller Center where SNL rehearses and records to be by his side. In now-deleted messages, she let Pete know she’d be downstairs waiting on him if he needed her… But according to TMZ , Pete was NOT having it when she arrived and alerted security to make sure she was denied access to the upstairs area he was in. Apparently, Ariana had texted a good chunk of Pete’s friend circle letting them know she was on her way to him out of concern after his suicidal-sounding posts. Word is, they all let Pete know what was up, so he had security at the ready to keep her out before she ever even arrived. Sheesh. And according to Pete’s good friend Machine Gun Kelly…it doesn’t appear that the comedian is doing much better than he was over the weekend when he sent out the alarming messages to begin with. Source: Toshi Sasaki / Getty Two Lawsuits Call Out Staff Members By Name Some horrible and shady things seem to be coming to light for a juvenile detention center in New York. According to New York Daily New s , supervisors and staff at the Horizon Juvenile Center were accused in a lawsuit of coercing teens to perform sex acts with them. The suit was filed on behalf of Franklyn Malonado, a teen who spent 2010 through 2014 in and out of Horizon. At the detention center, which holds 10 to 15-year-olds in Mott Haven, supervisors allegedly participated in “grooming” teen boys and girls to have sex with Horizon employees in exchange for things like smuggled booze, cigarettes and food. Former administrative director of residential child care, Tahia Dennis, was one of the supervisor named in the suit. Weeks after being named, Dennis ordered the shredding of internal documents. The content of the documents is unknown, but they could possibly link staff to the alleged abuse. Fortunately, the documents didn’t get destroyed and according to City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), they were seized by management and sent to a locked warehouse. The situation was then referred to the city Department of Investigation. The lawsuit described graphic details of the alleged abuse. In one instance, a female counselor was found naked on top of a teenager in his cell. Malonado says that same counselor told him she would make sure he didn’t face disciplinary actions if he “took care of her needs.” Initially, Malonado’s suit was filed in August of 2017 and it didn’t include names. However, in September of that year, Maldonado’s lawyer, Vik Pawar, filed an updated lawsuit that listed the names of supervisors, including Dennis. Twelve days later, Dennis sent out an email to the detention center’s tour commander and overseer of counselors, writing, “Please begin immediately to shred old paperwork and files that you might have since the building opened. Thank You.” A former employee at Horizon said the documents were shredded soon after the email was sent out, however a spokeswoman for the ACS, Chanel Caraway, told Daily News that none of the records were shredded. “This was part of a routine shredding of duplicate documents, but these documents were never actually shredded and have been stored in a secure location the entire time,” Caraway said. “However, the matter was referred to DOI upon learning of it.” A second lawsuit was filed in May of 2018 accusing certain Horizon staff members of sexual abuse. Miguel Smith, a teen who was at Horizon between 2013 and 2015, said that Dennis and another supervisor would “stand guard” while a female counselor had sex with him. Pawar is representing Smith as well, and he questions the claim that the email shredding order was apart of a routine task. “It says ‘from the beginning’ so they’ll be hard-pressed to explain that they’ve been doing this (shredding) going back,” Pawar said. “I think they’re hiding stuff. I think they got caught with their pants down and they were destroying evidence.” A new ACS commissioner had been appointed since all the alleged abused took place and he said he “ordered a top-to-bottom overhaul of leadership and practices at Horizon.” Meanwhile, the investigation of the staff in the lawsuits continues.
