Florida Votes To Restore Voting Rights To Ex-Cons Despite a major loss for the Democrats in Florida , the state got progressive on one major issue in particular. Voters approved Amendment 4 on their ballots, a policy that ensures that the vast majority of felons will regain their right to vote upon release from incarceration, or as soon as they are placed on probation. According to USA Today , previously, former Florida felons would have to wait five years after completing their sentence or their probation and file a former request with the Florida Clemency Board to restore their voting rights. Now, save those convicted of murder or sexual offenses, those who have satisfactorily served their time will have their voting rights restored automatically. Here’s portions of the story as told by Cory Rooney, Mariah Carey’s A&R at the time: I reached out to ODB and he wanted $15,000 to rap on the record. At the time, that was a lot of money, but it really wasn’t for Mariah Carey’s budget — so, no problem. He finally showed up, three hours late, and when he got there, it was about 10:30 at night. He had been drinking, and was on the phone when he walked in. Irate, screaming at some girl how he’s gonna come kill her, he’s going to kick her a**…and then whispering, “I love you.” Then screaming again. This went on for an hour. He finally came out and was like, “Yo, pardon me, this b**ch is driving me crazy. I need some Moet and Newports before we get into this record.” I said, “It’s 12:30 at night now bro, I don’t know where we’re going to get Moet from.” He started yelling at the assistants, calling them white devils, saying, “You white devils, y’all don’t want black people to have shit.” They went out for like an hour, and the only thing they could find were some Heinekens. He was so disgusted, he threw a bottle on the floor. Oh, but it gets better: At this point Mariah had been calling every hour on the hour, wanting to hear something over the phone. Tommy was pissed because Mariah was keeping him up, so he finally got on the phone with ODB — and after that, finally we started to record. He said one line — “me and Mariah, go back like babies with pacifiers” — then paused, said, “Yo, I need to take a break,” and went to sleep for 45 minutes. He woke up and was like, “Yo, let me hear what I did so far.” We played his one line back, he sang another line or two, and then slept for another hour. He would come up with a line, punch that in, go to sleep. He went to sleep 3 different times in the middle of trying to get that one verse done. If you listen to the record now, on his verse, you can hear that it’s punched in in pieces. He actually told the engineer, “Y’all better have your shit set and record it right, cause I’m not doing it twice.” I stayed in the studio until we finished it. So I was sleeping in the studio when Tommy and Mariah called me, and said they loved the record. But Tommy had a bright idea: let’s get ODB back in the studio, and instead of just, “New York in the house,” do [a line] for every city. I said, “You’ve got to be kidding.” Of course [ODB] wanted another $15,000. He came back to the studio, a little more mellow but dead tired. He’s sitting there picking food out of his teeth — he pulled a piece of food out of his mouth so big it was scary. I was like, “How long did you walk around with that food in your mouth?” Like, it was unbelievable. Then he fell asleep on couch, kicked one shoe off. His foot smelled so bad, we had to let him sleep and leave the control room. Eventually, we got the other parts done and that was that. I thought the story was over. WWD reports: Tim Leissner was chairman of Goldman Sachs’ Southeast Asia business, but he resigned in 2016 and was subsequently subpoenaed by the U.S. Justice Department as part of a probe into the disappearance of billions of dollars from a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund 1MDB that was designed to boost the country’s economy and for which he helped raise money. Leissner pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money and violate foreign anti-bribery laws, allegedly bribing officials in Malaysia and Abu Dhabi. He has been ordered to forfeit $43.7 million, according to court filings. Ng, a managing director at the investment bank until 2014, was arrested this week in Malaysia, while Low is on the run. Neither Kimora or Tim have spoken out about the charges.
Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images Uber Driver Gets Charged With Manslaughter For Death Of Teenage Passenger A 29-year-old Uber driver has been charged with manslaughter after a teenage passenger he let ‘car surf’ on the roof of his vehicle fell to his death. Ryan Mullen, 15, had been ‘car surfing’ on the roof of the Danyal Cheema’s vehicle on September 23 in Huntington. He ended up falling and subsequently suffered a traumatic brain injury, dying hours after he arrived at a friend’s house following the ride, Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini said. The whole situation began when they went to a 7Eleven store and, according to Sini, they asked the driver to car surf. “ This was an incredibly bad decision by the defendant, a bad decision by the boys involved, obviously,’ Tim Sini said. “ But at the end of the day, that defendant is an adult contracted to safely bring those boys home, and he failed to do that.” The driver, 24-year-old Danyal Cheema, is now being charged with second-degree manslaughter and was arraigned in Suffolk County Criminal Court on Monday morning. He made no comment at the proceeding and was ordered held on $200,000 bail. Along with the charge, his license was also suspended. The incident took place just after midnight in Huntington Station on September 23. Prosecutors have said that Mullen was with two other teens and that Cheema accepted $40 to allow Mullen and another teen to “car surf” on the roof of his Toyota Highlander SUV. He was said to be driving at 30 miles per hour when Mullen fell off the roof. Instead of taking the injured teen to a hospital, Cheema drove him to a friend’s house where Mullen died later that night. The medical examiner’s office ruled the young boy’s cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head. His parents, Janice and Matt Mullen, said they don’t want any family to suffer a loss similar to theirs again. Janice told ABC7 Eyewitness News : “This can’t happen again, no one should have to go through this pain.” In a statement on the incident, Uber said: “Words cannot describe how deeply troubled we are by this incident. Our thoughts are with the rider’s family during this difficult time. This driver has been permanently removed from the app.”
Hill Street Studios/Getty Images Brookwood High School Band Spells Out Racist Term People are in an uproar after a Georgia high school spelled out a racist term during a halftime show. Attendees of a recent Brookwood high school game in Gwinnett County, Georgia were shocked to see members of the school marching band standing next to each other and spelling out the word “c**n.” According to CBS News, the school’s Principal Bo Ford sent a letter to parents apologizing for the incident. According to Ford, some of the instruments have covers that spell out the name of the school’s mascot, “Broncos” but for some reason, the letters c-o-o-n were placed together. The famed singer had fans, friends, and family worried when she was rushed to a hospital after overdosing at her home in Los Angeles back in July. Now, in photos obtained by TMZ , she looks sober and happy. The site reports: Demi hit up Matsuhisa restaurant in Bev Hills Saturday night. We’re told she and a guy were having a great time inside the super expensive sushi joint, happy, smiling and laughing through dinner. We don’t know who the guy is … but she definitely had a great time with him. The mystery man seen in the photos with her is reportedly clothing designer, Henry Levy. Demi was in rehab for 90 days, beginning in August, and according to the site she took her time there very seriously. Before going through treatment, Demi addressed her fans in a statement . I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction. What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet. I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well. To my fans, I am forever grateful for all of your love and support throughout this past week and beyond. Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time. I want to thank my family, my team, and the staff at Cedars-Sinai who have been by my side this entire time. Without them I wouldn’t be here writing this letter to all of you. I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The “Chad Loves Michelle” star and her fiance sat down with Robin Roberts Friday to discuss a number of topics including her depression battle. According to Michelle while she was in a treatment facility for the illness, her fiance was understanding of her need to get help. She also added that after treatment she no longer labels people as “crazy.” “Michelle has a great perspective on it because the brain is an organ as well,” Johnson said. “If we have a kidney problem, we go get it checked, if we heart problem, we go get it checked. But when it comes to the brain for some reason we label people as crazy.” Williams chimed in, “When I was in the mental health facility, I didn’t see anybody that looked crazy. I didn’t see anybody strapped up, I didn’t see anybody doing crazy behavior. And literally since then, I watch my mouth. I don’t call people crazy anymore. Some people…they just need help.” She also added that Chad managed to love her “in sickness and in health” despite them not even being married. “I said ‘Babe, I will understand if you leave. I can go to bed at night knowing that you left because were praying for a wife but not a depressed one,’” Williams said. “But he showed me sickness and in health already before marriage.” Shoutout to Chad for sticking it out with Michelle, some other men would’ve left.
