AE Pictures Inc/Getty Images CEO’s Florida Vacation Marred By Racism This is horrible. Frank Davis, who is the president and CEO of the Horizon Group experienced some pretty awful racism while staying at the Art Ovation Hotel in Sarasota with his family. Davis and his son Michael left the hotel to have breakfast and go shopping and returned to the room to find the hateful note left inside a lamp next to the bed, ABC News affiliate WWSB reported. “You’re a n—-r,” the note read. “This is something in 2018 you don’t expect this kind of thing to happen,” he told WWSB. Davis reported the note to the hotel’s general manager and filed a report with local police. Art Ovation offered the Davises a free night’s stay but they opted to leave the property because they feared for their lives. “Who knows what other kind of actions that individual who clearly knew we were there was capable of,” Davis said. “Which is why we decided to relocate and find additional lodging for the remainder of our stay.” Art Ovation general manager Matthew Simone issued an apology to the Davis family and added that “allegations such as this are very concerning to us.” The hotel is investigating the incident. This is just crazy. What kind of person does something like this? Would you have changed hotels too?

Markus Scholz/picture alliance via Getty Images Philadelphia Burial Site To Honor Freed Slaves With Memorial Philadelphia’s Weccacoe Playground will soon be transformed into a historic memorial in honor of thousands of freed slaves. Discovered back in 2008 by historian Terry Buckalew, the community playground originally served as an African American Burial Ground for members of the Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church — which was purchased by the church in 1810. Archaeologists believe that an estimated 5,000 freed black slaves are buried 18 inches beneath the concrete, according to Associated Press . Now, after years of deliberating amongst community members, city officials announced plans last month to renovate a section of the playground into the Bethel Burying Ground Historic Site. “This is an opportunity to fix something that fell off of our radar, and it’s a teachable moment for these young children,” Leslie Patterson-Tyler tells AP . “It’s already a gathering place, so let’s continue to gather in this place and talk about what was.” Construction of the historical site — which will be located in Philly’s Queen Village neighborhood — will require the dismantling of a “well-used” community center to make way for the memorial. Rev. Mark Tyler went on to note that he hopes the Bethel Burying Ground Historic Site will inspire thought-provoking dialogue amongst all parents and children. “I think that would be a wonderful way to honor the ancestors who are buried there,” he said to the Associated Press . “To help these children write a new and better American story.”
Image via Visionhaus/Corbis via Getty Images Serena Williams Cried Because She Missed Daughter’s First Steps Serena Williams is a champion, a fierce competitor and a mother who loves her child. Often times, being all those things at once requires a level of sacrifice that can lead to disappointment. For example, yesterday while training to kick her opponents azz in the fourth round of Wimbledon, Serena missed a moment that she desperately wishes she could have back… She took her first steps… I was training and missed it. I cried. — Serena Williams (@serenawilliams) July 7, 2018 The replies to Serena’s posts are filled with consolations and uplifting messages from other moms. Sucks for Serena, but it’s nice to see that everyone on social media isn’t a soulless shell of a human.

Hannah Foslien/Getty Images Carmelo Anthony Is Parting Ways With The Thunder After only one year with the Oklahoma City Thunder, it looks like Carmelo Anthony will play for a new team next season. This information comes from a new report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Royce Young. It is not yet known exactly where or how the Thunder will offload Melo—only that they are definitely planning to move on without him. The team is reportedly exploring three different options: a trade, utilizing the league’s stretch provision, or a combined buyout and stretch. “Anthony’s agent, Leon Rose of CAA Sports, has a strong relationship and history with Thunder general manager Sam Presti, and they’ll work together on Anthony’s exit,” the report says. Melo recently opted into his $27.9 million contract for the 2018-19 season. If the Thunder kept him on the roster, they’d be due for a huge luxury tax bill with a $310 million payroll. As stated in the report, eliminating Melo from the picture could save OKC over $100 million. The report adds that Anthony “would be pursued vigorously among contenders on the free agent market.” Expect the Rockets, Heat, and Lakers to inquire. Melo has close relationships with Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade, and LeBron James–which has a lot of people hoping we could see James and Anthony join forces next season. We will most definitely find out where Melo is going soon, so place your bets now.
