Hmmm: Las Vegas Approves Installation Of Syringe Vending Machines To Combat Opioid Addiction

Las Vegas To Install Syringe Vending Machines To Fight HIV/Opioid Addiction The government damn sure wasn’t thinking about taking these advanced measures when brothas and sistas were hooked on heroin and crack, but we digress. According to NBCNews Las Vegas aka “Sin City” has approved a program that will install syringe vending machines in order to help fight opioid addiction and HIV. But you can’t just be any ol’ geeker off the street, you gotta join the program called Trac-B Exchange. “This is a harm reduction approach,” said Chelsi Cheatom, program manager for Trac-B Exchange, in an interview with NBC Las Vegas affiliate KSNV. “People are already exchanging in these behaviors, and anytime someone’s engaging in a behavior that could cause them some potential health side effects, we want to encourage them to reduce their risk of harm.” Hopefully, for the sake of the addicts, this program works. But it looks like it could left in a million different ways. Godspeed. Image via Getty

Small Victory: NYC Will Stop Prosecuting 16 And 17 Year Olds As Adults

Another small victory, courtesy of the late Kalief Browder. NYC Stops Prosecuting 16 And 17 Year Olds As Adults The city of New York is finally willing to “raise the age” of offenders charged as adults , allowing minors to be truly punished as minors for their alleged crimes, instead of like hard, adult criminals. Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the reform bill to change the age at which people are tried as adults to 17 this year and then to 18 next year as part of an effort to reform criminal justice. The NYC justice department will now direct minors who commit misdemeanors to family court and creates a special youth court for felonies. The issue of minors being tried as adults raised national attention after Kaleif Browder’s story blew up in media. As a minor he was held as an adult in Riker’s Island, spending majority of his time in solitary confinement, with out ever being charged. The experience tormented the young man, and also denied him of his basic rights to see a judge in a timely manner. RIP Kalief Browder, you’re still making a difference.

First Black Woman To Make Judge In NYC’s Highest Court Found Dead In Hudson River

Sheila Abdus-Salaam Found Dead In The Hudson River The first black woman appointed to New York state’s highest court was found dead along the Hudson River on Wednesday, with no immediate indication of the cause of death. According to Bloomberg , 65-year-old Sheila Abdus-Salaam was reported missing just one day before her body was discovered on the river bank in Harlem. Police reported that her body showed no obvious marks or bruises, so the medical examiner plans to study her remains to determine the cause of death. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who personally appointed Abdus-Salaam the NY Court of Appeals back in 2013, only had fond words to speak of the woman he called a “trailblazing jurist.” “As the first African-American woman to be appointed to the state’s Court of Appeals, she was a pioneer. Through her writings, her wisdom and her unshakable moral compass, she was a force for good whose legacy will be felt for years to come.” Sheila Abdus-Salaam, worked hard to achieve her position. After growing up in poor means in a family of 7 kids in Washington D.C. she managed to graduate from Barnard College and earn a law degree from Columbia Law. Working up from a staff attorney position at East Brooklyn Legal Services, she eventually became a judge in the Manhattan Supreme Court, where she served for 14 years before being selected to the high court by Cuomo. Sheila Abdus-Salaam was truly an inspiration, so it’s definitely sad to see her come to such a tragic end under mysterious (and likely foul) circumstances. Our thoughts are with her family members… Creative Commons/Instagram
