The fast-food chain’s foundation is announcing that it’s dishing out more than just fourth meal curbing cravings, The Taco Bell Foundation is awarding $4.6 million in scholarships. Dubbed the Live Más Scholarships, the scholarships were created for students with passion, not academic merit or athletic ability. All that the application requires is a 2-minute video describing what they love to do. No essays, test scores or GPA are considered for the awardees. This year after receiving nearly 13,000 applicants, TB’s awarding money to 531 students, over half which are students of color. This is especially important considering the racial disparities in education. According to EdBuild , predominantly white school districts receive $23 billion more than with districts that serve mostly students of color. According to Brookings , black graduates with bachelor’s degrees owe $7,400 more on average in college loans than their white peers. The Taco Bell Foundation gave out $25,000 worth of Live Más moola, the scholarship’s top prize, to several deserving students including: Dwalyn Bryant a former Taco Bell employee who will use the scholarship to study biomedical health at Penn State, in hopes of becoming a surgeon one day. After her mom was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, she knew that wanted to make an impact in the medical field. Source: Splash News / Splash News Wu-Tang Clan Becomes First Rap Act To Headline Ryman Auditorium Wu-Tang Clan is continuing to take over all media sites and venues , with appearances in places you might least expect them. Most recently, they headlined the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, which is usually reserved for more country acts, church revivals and boxing matches, according to NPR . Ever since they opened in 1892, Ryman has hosted everyone from Johnny Cash to Helen Keller to Harry Houdini. But never a hip hop act… Until now. On June 9, Wu-Tang played a sold-out show at the theater nicknamed “The Mother Church of Country Music.” The performance was apart of their international tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of their Enter the Wu-Tang album. “This isn’t your grandparents’ Ryman,” says Shannon Sanders , a record producer and Grammy-winning musician. In the 80s, Sanders was apart of one of Nashville’s first hip hop groups, and he says the hip hop scene there has often lived in the shadow of country: “It’s just been hard to be part of the narrative of the city’s musical story.” Now, Sanders says listeners have diversified their tastes, going from country to rock to hip hop. “You know, the Ryman has had to grow up too, and had to grow up into what the city is,” Sanders says. “You know, the Wu-Tang is ready for the Ryman, but also the Ryman is ready for the Wu-Tang.” Based on the crowd, it was definitely a night to remember. Judge allows racist FB page as evidence in fatal stabbing of newly commissioned 2nd lieutenant https://t.co/4zrIYP3IdX pic.twitter.com/lN6yryOgdj — ArmyTimes (@ArmyTimes) June 6, 2019 Racist Images Allowed In Sean Christopher Urbanski Murder Trial A huge win recently went down in court for the family of a Bowie State student fatally stabbed by a suspected white supremacist. Racist images on the phone of Sean Christopher Urbanski will be presented to the jury during the murder trial for the fatal stabbing of Richard Collins III. The Capital Gazette reports that Urbanski’s lawyers fought to have the images thrown out calling them “stupid and tasteless” but ultimately irrelevant to the killing. A Prince George’s County Circuit Court judge disagreed however and ruled that the images which include a hanging noose and “racially insensitive” memes could be presented as evidence. Prosecutors argued that the photos prove Urbanski selected Collins to kill because he was black. Lt. Richard Collins III was killed near the campus of University of Maryland College Park in May 2017. He was with two friends at a bus stop and heard Urbanski screaming, “Step left, step left if you know what’s best for you.” After Collins refused, Urbanski stabbed him once in the chest. Source: John Lamparski / Getty The Central Park Five Receive The Roger Baldwin Courage Award Michael B. Jordan praised The Central Park Five — Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise — for their perseverance and courage during a luncheon in which the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California honored Netflix’s series about their case. The actor told the men on Friday that he cannot watch footage of the new series When They See Us without getting emotional and feeling like as a young black man he too could have faced a similar ordeal. “It’s dangerous in America when you’re living in a black body,” Jordan said. “The whole time that these men were incarcerated, they never changed their story. They insisted of their innocence even as they did their time.” Yusef Salaam shed a couple tears as he accepted an award on behalf of the series creator, Ava DuVernay. “I’m not ashamed to cry in front of you,” Salaam said after a moment of silence as he reflected on the fact that he and the other men were “just boys” when they were wrongfully convicted. “Our story is a story of an egregious miscarriage of justice.” Salaam and the rest of the Central Park Five were exonerated back in 2002 after being charged with the 1989 rape of a woman in New York’s Central Park. They received a standing ovation as they accepted the ACLU chapter’s inaugural Roger Baldwin Courage Award; Baldwin was one of the ACLU’s founders and its first executive director. Though this story and the outrage surrounding it is anything but new, DuVernay’s series has re-ignited a public outcry over how the case was handled. Shortly before the men accepted their award, Linda Fairstein–the Manhattan sex crimes prosecutor who observed the teenagers’ interrogation–was dropped by her book publisher in the face of the increasing criticism.
