Kevin Mazur/Getty Images For Parkwood Entertainment Beyoncé’s Ex-Manager Raises Money To Buy Some Of Her Songs According to reports from Billboard , Hipgnosis Songs, a music IP company founded by Beyoncé’s former manager Merck Mercuriadis, just raised $260 million of investment capital with the goal of acquiring some of the star’s most popular tracks. Mercuriadis, who also managed artists including Guns N’ Roses, Elton John, and Diane Warren, won’t just be aiming to buy tracks from Bey though. It looks like his company looking to gain “eight catalogs from well-known songwriters, spanning over 1,000 songs, including more than 10 Number 1s in the U.K. and U.S.” according to Billboard . Before the fundraiser took place, a former IPO named Adele, Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, and Kanye West as potential musician catalogs to go after. “I believe that the song, even more so than the artist, is the most important component in a hit record,” Mercuriadis said. “I’ve spent the better part of the last 35 years advocating for great artists, songwriters and producers and my ambition is to grow the fund not only to provide great returns for our investors but equally well in due course to create the leverage that only critical mass can provide to change the songwriters position in the economic model.”

If you follow 50 on IG then you’ve no doubt seen him pettily posting about Terry Crews’ sexual assault allegations that Fif and Russell Simmons (whose STILL getting hit with sexual assault allegations) apparently found funny. But while recently walking the red carpet in NYC, 50 backpedaled and said his posts about Terry were all just a joke. “When you put lol behind any statement it means you’re laughing out loud so it means it’s a joke,” said Fif. Someone’s sounding “guilty as f***” , the Terry Crews posts have mysteriously gone missing from 50’s page. He also added on Twitter that his publicist told him to “play dead” around journalists. In its wake, there has been a flood of critically acclaimed Black content being produced for the big screen and 2017 saw some prominent people of color being awarded golden statues. In what appears to be an effort to continue this trend, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has offered memberships to 928 people according to The Hollywood Reporter . That number is up significantly from the 774 membership offers that were issued in 2017. Names like 14-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis and Get Out -turned- Black Panther star Daniel Kaluuya. Also, Tiffany Haddish, Trevante Rhodes, and veteran Wendell Pierce were extended invites to join the club. Here’s what these new potential members mean in regards to the demographic breakdown of voters: Forty-nine percent of the class of 2018 are female, and, should all accept membership, that will bring overall percentage of women in the Academy to 31 percent. Thirty-eight percent of the new invitees are people of color, which, should they all accept, would bring their overall percentage of the Academy to 16 percent. 16 percent is still embarrassingly low, but at least we’re making some progress, right? Hopefully folks like Dave Chappelle, Mindy Kaling, George Lopez accept their offers and can help bring about the change that we want to see in award shows going forward.

Leonard Roberts Talks New Space Comedy On Brown Sugar A new comedy reimagines futuristic space travel through the perspective of 1970s era Blaxploitation. “BlackStar Warrior” tells the story of Tyson Roderick, a space traveler, who along with his robot sidekick, Lava, try to unravel the mystery of where he came from and why he’s just so freaking amazing. And its star Leonard Roberts told us that the show’s over the top premise allowed him to go all out. “It gave me permission to go full out, because we had authenticity at both ends,” Roberts said. “For whatever reason, Those types roles don’t often just cross my desk, so it was cool to just jump in with both feet and have a ball with it.” Peep the show’s trailer above. “BlackStar Warrior” premieres June 24 on Bounce TV’s streaming service, “Brown Sugar.”
