Someone we actually like… Ava Duvernay Hosts Queen Sugar Screening At The 2016 Essence Festival During this year’s 2016 Essence Music Festiva l, film impresario Ava Duvernay held a private screening for her forthcoming OWN series. Titled “Queen Sugar” the drama tells the story of a New Orleans based family facing harsh realities, scandals and day to day effects of the prison industrial complex. BOSSIP was in attendance for the screening and watched as Duverany excitedly introduced her cast consisting of mainly newcomers Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Kofi Siriboe, Omar Dorsey, Tina Lifford, Dondre Whitfield and Nicholas Ashe. Attendees included Common.. Janelle Monae Omari Hardwick and Michelle Williams. “Queen Sugar” will debut as a two-night event on Tuesday, September 6 and Wednesday, September 7 at 10PM ET/PT on OWN. The series, which also hails an all-female directing squad, will regularly air Wednesday nights at 10PM ET/PT for the remainder of its 13-episode first season. We’ll be watching, will YOU??? Lil Kim Cancels Essence Fest Appearance Bad news for Queen Bee fans descending on New Orleans this weekend. Essence Festival is already underway and multiple artists have already hit the stage for day one…but one hotly anticipated face won’t be appearing on stage this weekend as planned. Lil Kim has had to pull out of the festivities at the 11th hour, for vague reasons. As Kim’s people shared with People Mag : Lil’ Kim was scheduled to take the stage at this weekend’s Essence Festival, Essence magazine’s annual music and entertainment event held in New Orleans, but her rep issued a statement Friday, announcing the rapper would not be joining Puff Daddy and fellow Bad Boy Records alums on stage due to “unfulfilled business obligations.” “I was looking forward to it,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively of getting to perform for fans at Essence Fest. “I’m so disappointed and sad about that.” In the statement her rep said, “She’s saddened by the news but matters are not within her control.” Man, that sucks for whoever got tickets to see Kim!
