Couple Loses $52 Million Due To App Glitch One UK couple’s 2016 is already off to quite a rough start . What should have been the windfall that changed their lives turned into a “better luck next time,” and all because their app wouldn’t refresh properly until it was too late… via HuffPost : A couple in the U.K. was reportedly denied $52 million in winnings due to a faulty smartphone app. Instead of ringing in the New Year with their 35.4 million pound windfall by choosing all six winning numbers, grandparents Edwina and David Nylan of England are nursing a hangover of missed fortune. When Edwina called the U.K. lottery to claim the jackpot, a representative told the pair they had entered the drawing too late. “We’ve tried to have a laugh about it but we’re completely distraught,” Edwina told SWNS. “We’ve spent years paying out for the lottery and this money could have changed our lives. We feel like we’ve been cheated out of it.” The couple said they used a cell phone app to purchase a ticket on Dec. 23, SWNS reported. When they were alerted that their account required more funds for the purchase, they added more money. Then they bought the ticket with six numbers they chose randomly, and the app confirmed the buy, they said. But lottery officials say they have no record of the purchase. Authorities reportedly confirmed they have a record of the couple repeatedly trying to add funds as the 7:30 p.m. drawing limit approached — but assert they did not register a completed transaction before the deadline. The payment was eventually processed, but not until midnight, on Dec. 24, way past the deadline, the Mirror reported. YIKES. We have to admit, that sounds like a seriously tough loss to get over. Kardashians Lower Magazine Sales Apparently the Kardashian’s golden touch is waning. The family that could sell just about anything is having a tough time selling magazines. Figures covered by WWD have found that even though the Kardashian Klan’s image can draw dollars for most brands and products…their faces on a magazine cover actually make readers less likely to snatch a mag up and take it home. Via Complex : Using data collected by Alliance for Audited, WWD found that when magazines featured members of the family on their covers, they experienced a decline in copy sales. Pretty shocking considering the slew of covers they landed this year. For example, during the first half of 2015, Cosmopolitan’s single-copy sales averaged 531,086. When Kendall Jenner took the cover for the magazine’s February issue, it only sold 495,423. Clearly it wasn’t a success, but it did out-sell the November issue, which featured all the Kardashian-Jenner daughters along with their mother, Kris. That issue only sold 436,500 copies. The article goes on to provide additional data from magazines like GQ, Glamour, and Vanity Fair, which all experienced sales declines when they put members of the family on the cover; however, it’s important to note that there were a few exceptions: Rolling Stone, Women’s Health, and Teen Vogue surpassed their averages when they had Kardashian-Jenner cover stars—reminding everyone the family still has a large and loyal following. New York State Legalizes Medical Pot Do you think the Big Apple is ready for weed dispensaries? The state thinks so and their medical marijuana program launches this week! Read the details of the launch courtesy of The NY Daily News . State officials will formally launch New York’s medical marijuana program on Thursday and at least one city pot dispensary expects to be ready. “New York State’s Medical Marijuana Program is scheduled to launch on January 7, 2016, just 18 months after Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Compassionate Care Act,” Health Department spokesman James Plastiras said in an email to reporters late Monday afternoon. “More information and details on the program will be released shortly,” Plastiras added. Columbia Care, one of five companies licensed to grow marijuana in New York, announced Monday that its Union Square dispensary plans to open Thursday. Other dispensaries planned for Murray Hill, the Bronx and Queens are expected to open sometime later in the month. While state officials had previously indicated the medical marijuana program would launch in January, they had not provided an exact date or released any information on the number of doctors certified to proscribe the drug. The law requires that patients seeking medical marijuana first be certified by a state-approved physician and then register with the Health Department and obtain a registry identification card before being allowed to purchase the product. The lack of information has raised alarm among medical marijuana advocates who feel the system may be too restrictive and difficult for patients to navigate. “We are looking forward to seeing the additional information and details about the program,” said Julie Netherland of the Drug Policy Alliance. “Patients in New York have been waiting a long time for the day when they can legally purchase medical marijuana. We hope the program roll out goes smoothly and that patients will finally have some relief from their suffering.” Where do we sign up?!
