Florida Man Cuts Off Dreadlocks So He Can Find Employment Dominick Davis, 41, of Jacksonville, Fla., had not had a haircut in 10 years, preferring to wear his hair in dreadlocks . Davis recently cut them off because he believes that his hair might have preventing him from finding employment. Via The Root reports: “It’s time for a change, because enough is enough,” Davis, an ex-offender who served six years in prison, told Action News Jax. “People feel like everyone that has dreads are bad people or they’re criminals,” he added, noting that he’s hoping that the change in his appearance since his recent release may help him secure employment. Davis told the news station that the uptick in Jacksonville crime by those described as having “dreads” also hasn’t helped him. “You turn on the TV, and if they have a suspect, the description is a person with dreads,” said Davis, who told the news station that conforming to a professional look is part of seeking a job, and if dreads are attached to negativity, then he doesn’t want any part. “You absolutely have to dress. You can’t go on an interview with jeans, T-shirt. You’re basically selling yourself,” he said. Looks like Giuliana Rancic and other stereotyping haters win this round….
Black Hooters Fired For Dying Hair Blonde Awarded $250k A former African-American Hooters waitress has been awarded more than $250,000 after an arbitrator found that racial discrimination contributed to her getting fired. Via NBC News reports: Farryn Johnson, was fired from her Baltimore restaurant job in August 2013 because “Hooters prohibits African-American Hooters Girls from wearing blond highlights in their hair,” according to a lawsuit. While other women were allowed to highlight their hair, the restaurant manager told Johnson she couldn’t be at work with blond streaks because it didn’t look “natural” on African-Americans, the suit said. “The manager at the time literally said, ‘You can’t have blond because black people don’t have blond hair,’” Johnson, who had worked at the restaurant for about a year, told NBC affiliate WBAL-TV in Baltimore. Johnson told the station her shifts were slashed and she received written warnings about her hair, and then ultimately, she was fired. “I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it,” she said. Johnson sued, and last Thursday, an arbitrator awarded her more than $250,000 for lost wages and legal fees. Arbitrator Edmund D. Cooke Jr. wrote that Hooters violated state and federal civil rights laws and that the hair policy “was implemented in a discriminatory manner adversely affecting African-American women.” Hooters criticized the ruling in a lengthy statement on its website, claiming the restaurant never told Johnson she couldn’t wear her hair a certain way. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” the statement said, calling the arbitrator’s decision “flawed.” Ericka Whitaker, senior brand manager of Hooters of America, said in the statement, “As a former Hooters Girl who happens to be African-American, I, like countless other African-American Hooters Girls today, regularly wore my hair in various shades of blond, or any other color consistent with our ‘girl next door’ image.” The restaurant chain also called reports of Johnson receiving $250,000 in back pay exaggerated. Aaron Leetch And Torrey Ward Deaths Illinois State University is currently in mourning after two members of their coaching staff’s lives ended in tragedy. After attending Monday’s NCCA Basketball championship game in Indianapolis, Aaron Leetch (L) and Torrey Ward (R) were killed when their small plane crashed. The Chicago Tribune reports: Two members of Illinois State University’s athletic department were among the seven people killed when their small plane crashed near the Bloomington airport while returning from the NCAA basketball championship game in Indianapolis, authorities said. They were identified as Aaron Leetch, deputy director of athletics for external operations, and Torrey Ward, associate head coach of the Redbirds men’s basketball team. “The entire campus (is) in mourning,” ISU President Larry Dietz said in a statement. Two other victims have been identified: Terry Stralow, a partner in a popular bar in Bloomington-Normal, and Scott Bittner, owner of a meat-processing company and owner of the twin-engine Cessna 414 that crashed. No information about the others killed was available, but authorities said everyone on board died in the crash. The plane left the Indianapolis airport about 11 p.m. Monday and hit heavy fog over central Illinois, authorities said. About 12:15 a.m., radar contact with the plane was lost, according to the sheriff’s office. A search was launched, and a Bloomington police officer discovered the wreckage in a field northeast of the airport, the office said. “It was determined that there were no survivors,” the office said. At some point “that radio contact was lost,” he said. Olson did not say if the pilot indicated experiencing any trouble. The pilot did not cancel the flight plan or make any alterations in flight, he said. So sad, condolences to the families of the coaches and the rest of the victims.
