Wow… In an effort to open discussion about immigration policy in the US, Orange is The New Black star Diane Guerrero shared her own personal story of how deportation tore her family apart and forced her to live on her own at age 14. Via TalkingPoints : In an interview with CNN on Monday, “Orange Is The New Black” actress Diane Guerrero was brought to tears on-air as she described the deportation of her family when she was a teenager. “I got home, and their cars were there and dinner was started and the lights were on, but I couldn’t find them,” Guerrero told host Michaela Pereira. Guerrero explained that at age 14, she had arrived home from her performing arts school only to find her parents had been removed from the house. They were eventually sent to Colombia. The actress broke down when she said the separation had caused her to feel alienated from her own family. “It’s tough, it’s like we’ve been separated for so long, I feel like sometimes we don’t know each other,” she said. “It’s difficult because I’ve grown up without them, and there’s things about them that are new that I don’t recognize, and it just — it hurts.” Guerrero also recently wrote about the ordeal in an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times amid speculation over possible executive actions on immigration by President Obama. “Not a single person at any level of government took any note of me,” she wrote. “No one checked to see if I had a place to live or food to eat, and at 14, I found myself basically on my own.” She’s lucky her life turned out as well as it did! At 14, alone without her family in a foreign country…things definitely could have taken a tragic turn.

Turkish President Says Muslims, Not Columbus, Discovered America Turkey’s President wants the world to know that Muslims had a place in the Americas long before Christopher Columbus paved the way for colonization. Via NY Post reports : President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke Saturday in Istanbul at a summit comprised of Muslim leaders from Latin America and claimed that Islamic sailors stumbled upon the New World more than 300 years before the famed Italian made landfall. “Muslims discovered America in 1178, not Christopher Columbus,” he said, according to the Daily Mail . “Contacts between Latin America and Islam date back to the 12th century. Columbus mentioned the existence of a mosque on a hill on the Cuban coast.” The Spanish-employed sailor did speak of a mosque in his personal diary, which was published in 1996, but the notion has been widely considered to be a misunderstanding and should instead be viewed as a metaphor for the shape of the landscape. The fact that no Islamic structures have been unearthed that pre-date Columbus also debunks Erdogan’s claims. Despite this, the Turkish leader proudly disregarded Columbus’ purported discovery of America in 1492 and preached that a link should instead be established between Muslims and the Latin American people. “I would like to talk about it to my Cuban brothers,” he added. “A mosque would go perfectly on the hill today.” Do you think his theory holds water?
