The former presidential candidate will strap on the gloves and duke it out with former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield in a charity boxing event on May 15 in Salt Lake City, a report said. “It will either be a very short fight, or I will be knocked unconscious,” Romney joked in an interview with The Salt Lake City Tribune. “It won’t be much of a fight. We’ll both suit up and get in the ring and spar around a little bit.” The event is a fundraiser for Charity Vision, a nonprofit organization that works to help the blind. Romney, 68, thought it’d be fun to spar with “The Real Deal” Holyfield. “We just thought it would be a lot better to provide this kind of entertainment rather than just have dinner and listen to speakers,” Romney said. Study Shows At Least 70 Police Departments Arrest Blacks At A Rate 10 Times Higher Than Other Races It’s certainly no secret that African-Americans are targeted by police at a much higher rate than any other race, but a new report done by USA Today recently revealed just how alarmingly true this epidemic is. via USA Today When it comes to racially lopsided arrests, the most remarkable thing about Ferguson, Mo., might be just how ordinary it is. Police in Ferguson — which erupted into days of racially charged unrest after a white officer killed an unarmed black teen — arrest black people at a rate nearly three times higher than people of other races. At least 1,581 other police departments across the USA arrest black people at rates even more skewed than in Ferguson, a USA TODAY analysis of arrest records shows. That includes departments in cities as large and diverse as Chicago and San Francisco and in the suburbs that encircle St. Louis, New York and Detroit. Those disparities are easier to measure than they are to explain. They could be a reflection of biased policing; they could just as easily be a byproduct of the vast economic and educational gaps that persist across much of the USA — factors closely tied to crime rates. In other words, experts said, the fact that such disparities exist does little to explain their causes. “That does not mean police are discriminating. But it does mean it’s worth looking at. It means you might have a problem, and you need to pay attention,” said University of Pittsburgh law professor David Harris, a leading expert on racial profiling. Whatever the reasons, the results are the same: Blacks are far more likely to be arrested than any other racial group in the USA. In some places, dramatically so. At least 70 departments scattered from Connecticut to California arrested black people at a rate 10 times higher than people who are not black, USA TODAY found. “Something needs to be done about that,” said Ezekiel Edwards, the head of the ACLU’s Criminal Law Reform Project, which has raised concerns about such disparate arrest rates. “In 2014, we shouldn’t continue to see this kind of staggering disparity wherever we look.”

Mom Rips Out Daughter’s Hair For Not Being Able To Count A Pennsylvania, woman is in custody after authorities say she became so irate that her 6-year-old couldn’t count to 12 that she ripped a chunk of hair from her scalp. WPXI reports: A beaver county mother is facing charges after authorities said she abused her daughter by violently pulling her hair. According to the complaint, officers were first alerted to the case on Aug. 31 when hospital officials reported they were treating a 6-year-old for an injury to her head. The complaint said the injury was described as a separation of the victim’s scalp from her skull, also known as traction. This caused a void between the skull and scalp that filled with blood. “The doctors told us there was a separation of the victim from her skull,” Conway police Officer Mike Priolo said. Doctors who treated the girl told police her injuries were most consistent with violent hair pulling, as well as an impact to her left ear. Once officers interviewed the girl’s mother, identified as Brittany Ruck, the complaint states she admitted to pulling her daughter’s hair to get her attention. The complaint said the child told police that her mother wanted her to count to 12, but she couldn’t. “The little girl told us she could only count to 10 because she had 10 fingers, but she couldn’t count any higher. That’s when the mother grabbed her by her hair,” Priolo said. According to the complaint, the girl told police that on a separate occasion, her mother pulled her across the floor into a corner by a hair. “It’s just sad because she didn’t do anything wrong and she had to bear the brunt of pain,” Priolo said. Channel 11 News had learned Ruck has three children, and they’ve been placed with other family members. Study Finds White People More In Support Of Voter Suppression Laws After Seeing Black People Vote via Kulture Kritic Researchers from the University of Delaware’s Center for Political Communication have released a new study suggesting that photographs of black Americans using voting machines affect white respondents’ support of voter-ID laws. According to the study (pdf), when white survey respondents saw an image of black Americans using ballot machines, they had stronger support for voter ID than those who did not see the image. Furthermore, seeing white Americans using ballot machines had no impact on respondents’ support of the controversial laws. “Our findings suggest that public opinion about voter-ID laws can be racialized by simply showing images of African-American people,” David C. Wilson, who helped supervise the nationwide study, said. For the survey, which was conducted online in 2012, respondents were divided into three groups, one of which saw an image of black voters, one that saw an image of white voters and one that saw no image at all. In the first group, which saw a picture of black voters, 73 percent of white respondents said that they favored voter-ID laws. This is in comparison with the white respondentsin the remaining two groups, who were 67 percent in favor. The 6-percentage-point difference is big enough to be statistically significant, researchers say. “Majorities in all three groups favored voter-ID laws, but the margin was wider when white respondents saw a black person using a voting machine,” Wilson said.

Congress Rejects New Law That Would Decrease Criminalizatoin Of Black People In D.C. A recently rejected law in Washington D.C. has many in the black community convinced that Congress purposely blocked the legislation because it would have greatly minimized the criminalization of black people in the district. via Kulture Kritic Despite the recent vote by Washington D.C.’s Council to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, the law will not go into effect. Alternet is reporting that Congress has exercised its right to review the law. This is despite the fact that D.C. has no voting representatives in Congress. Maryland Republican Representative Andy Harris is responsible for introducing an amendment to the District of Columbia Appropriations Bill that effectively negates the decriminalization law. In a press release from the ACLU, executive director Monica Hopkins-Maxwell states, “By any measure, the war on drugs, particularly on marijuana, has been a failure and severely impacted black communities and communities of color. Today’s rider passage is a detrimental blow in the D.C. Council’s attempt to enact smarter, fairer laws that address racial disparities and the mass incarceration of communities of color.” According to a 2013 ACLU-NCA study, D.C. law enforcement made 5,393 marijuana related arrests in 2010 with 91 percent of those arrested being black. The study also found that black people were eight times more likely to be arrested for pot possession in D.C. than whites. The decriminalization law would have reduced these outcomes by no longer allowing prosecution for possession of small amounts of marijuana, which clearly have a disproportionate impact on people of color.
