Will You Be Watching? Blaxploitation Sci-Fi Show “BlackStar Warrior” Premieres Next Week

Leonard Roberts Talks New Space Comedy On Brown Sugar A new comedy reimagines futuristic space travel through the perspective of 1970s era Blaxploitation. “BlackStar Warrior” tells the story of Tyson Roderick, a space traveler, who along with his robot sidekick, Lava, try to unravel the mystery of where he came from and why he’s just so freaking amazing. And its star Leonard Roberts told us that the show’s over the top premise allowed him to go all out. “It gave me permission to go full out, because we had authenticity at both ends,” Roberts said. “For whatever reason, Those types roles don’t often just cross my desk, so it was cool to just jump in with both feet and have a ball with it.” Peep the show’s trailer above. “BlackStar Warrior” premieres June 24 on Bounce TV’s streaming service, “Brown Sugar.”

Exclusive: Meet Elvire Emmanuel, Star Of Netflix’s Searing New Drama “First Match”

Courtesy of Netflix “First Match” Premieres On Netflix The lead star of the new Netflix movie, “First Match,” said she hopes her role will shed a light on lesser known stories of the Black Experience. Elvire Emmanuel said she put her all into her character, Monique, or Mo’ and her struggle for acceptance from her distant dad. “It’s an important story and it needed to be told,” Emmanuel told us. “It’s a story that you don’t hear that much, but it’s a reality for some people.” Written and directed by Olivia Newman, “First Match” centers around Mo’ – a girl in and out of foster homes – who joins her high school boys’ wrestling team in order to win over her estranged father. “Mo is shattered and broken, but she has to put on a strong face,” Emmanuel explained. “I wanted it to be authentic and real for people to understand that she’s real.” Emmanuel said writer director Newman shot the movie on location in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and is loosely based on true events and real people. Newman got the idea for the film after hanging out with a couple of girls who joined the boys wrestling team, and specifically one girl, who was in foster care, who learned at practice that her only living relatives – her grandparents – weren’t interested in taking her in. The young actress said she hopes viewers take away the fact that “when you fall down, you can get back up again.” “You’ll see the story of someone you don’t get to see much,” Emmanuel said, “and her trying to get better.” Continue reading

Black Dads Matter: Mekka Don Delivers A Special Message For His Son On “To Elijah” [VIDEO]

Courtesy Mekka Don Mekka Don Has An Important Message In Latest Song Earlier this week BOSSIP spent some time with rapper Mekka Don (who is also an Ohio State and NYU educated lawyer! ) to discuss his upcoming project ‘Fly With Me’ which includes his single “To Elijah”. The video for the song went viral when it was released on Twitter last month and we’re sharing it below: I more then ever started to realize my mortality when my son was born. That feeling scared me into memorializing the things that I’d want to teach him in case my time on this Earth ends early. Feel free to share. To: Elijah pic.twitter.com/hwfP7VBx1x — Mekka Don (@MekkaDonMusic) March 1, 2018 The video drew heavy praise from the likes of celebrities including Chuck D, Taj George (SWV), numerous athletes and more. Mekka Don told BOSSIP the song came about after he felt a stronger sense of mortality following his son’s birth. He says that, much like T’Chaka’s message to T’Challa in ‘Black Panther,’ he realized that a father who hasn’t prepared his son for his death has failed him and he wanted to be sure his son would get the proper lessons from him. Mekka Don also made two appearances on CBS 46 in Atlanta this week, speaking with Sharon Reed about the song and its important message. Had a great time on @cbs46 last night in Atlanta with @SharonReedCBS46 ! So great that they want me back on today at 4 pm! . Exclusive: Student Employee Accused In $1 Million Howard University Financial Aid Scandal Says He’s A Victim & Did Nothing Wrong

Tyrone Hankerson Said He’s A Victim In This Case – And His Record Will Speak For Itself One of the Howard University employees accused of a massive embezzlement scheme has fired back at the anonymous claims, saying he’s innocent and has been victimized himself. An article published on Medium this week claimed that Howard University staff stole some $1 million in financial aid earmarked for students from 2013 through 2017. The article states that the HBCU’s president, Wayne Frederick, knew about the fraud since at least May 2017, but had not acted. The article specifically names Tyrone Hankerson, who was then a student employee, as well as Associate Director of Financial Aid, Brian Johnson, alleging the men both received unusually large grants and stipends from the school. The piece has since been taken down. But Hankerson said in a statement to BOSSIP exclusively that the article and the info that was cherry picked from his confidential records doesn’t paint the whole picture, and he’s the one who has been wronged. Hankerson said he did receive financial aid from the university, but it was nothing unusual for a student on a scholarship who also went abroad to continue his education. Hankerson said he never authorized the release of his records to anyone, and his legal team is working with the university to find out who leaked his data. He said he has never had any criminal or disciplinary record from the school, has been a model student and wants the public to stop the rush to judgement. Hit the flip to read Hankerson’s statement:
