The Dream Hampton produced series documented the sexual abuse allegations against the singer throughout his 30 year career. Needless to say, ish got deep. The plan was also for Kelly’s celebrity colleagues to be interviewed about what it was like to work with the singer over the years, but according to Hampton, Jay-Z , Lady Gaga and Erykah Badu declined. Dave Chappelle , Mary J. Blige , Questlove and Lil’ Kim also declined to speak. Hampton told Detroit Free Press , “Most people just don’t want to touch it. [Questlove] was like, ‘I would do anything for you but I can’t do this.’ It’s not because they support him, it’s because it’s so messy and muddy. It’s that turning away that has allowed this to go on.” Quest also took to Twitter the day that Surviving R. Kelly premiered, just to make it clear why he wasn’t apart of it. He tweeted (then deleted), “I always thought Kels was trash. My reason for declining the RKelly docu that I support 10000000 percent is I didn’t wanna be in the ‘good times’ portion of the doc, like stanning for his ‘genius.’ I was asked to talk about his genius. I do not nor have I EVER stanned for him.” Usually something so heavy has mixed reaction. But after watching the series, most people unanimously agree that it time we be done with R. Let some tell it, she kind of bombed, so much so that she was booed, prompting some folks at her sold-out show to walk out. Too often, when Black women have the audacity to excel at their craft, especially in areas that are male dominated, there will always be insecure men who will do and say anything to undermine that success. Hence, all these new rules that Black women have to follow and double standards we must adhere to that men never have to abide by. See, our greatness isn’t always looked at something to celebrate, it can be seen as a threat and a roadblock to other’s accomplishments. ‘Cause be crystal clear: We’re all Black queens, until our stars begin to shine brighter than theirs. Tiffany Haddish just happens to be the one currently in the crosshairs of that misogynist nonsense and her bombing in Miami continues to show us that as Black women we aren’t allowed to make mistakes. There is no room for error. We have to work harder, be smarter and be flawless in order for our talent to get a sliver of the recognition our mediocre male counterparts garner. But whether you love or hate her, Ms. Haddish isn’t going anywhere, but up. He decided that his needs trumped her feelings, personal space and spotlight. So he came to her job uninvited, ambushing and coercing her in front of thousands of people, thinking she would crumble under the pressure of not wanting to bruise a Black man’s ego in public and essentially take him back. If this isn’t the definition of toxic masculinity, I don’t know what is. Sadly, he didn’t do this all by himself. For the complicit folks at Rolling Loud who knew about this before hand—and even bragged about it on Twitter—and the people close to Cardi who were in on the stunt and didn’t tell her ahead of time, they all need their asses beat too. This did not have to happen in public. Be clear: My critique isn’t about me stanning. I’ve never been a Cardi B fan—I’m still confused at all her Grammy nominations and am often turned off by her online and in-person behavior , especially that NYFW nonsense with Nicki Minaj a few months back. Not to mention, her colorism and past homophobic and transphobic remarks. But what I do appreciate is her come-up story, her resilience and watching her grow as a woman, a rapper and a mother. Perhaps that’s why philandering goons like T.I. , The Game , Kirk Frost and 50 Cent continue to berate the 26-year-old for “breaking up her family,” while downplaying the severity that having sex with other women can have on a marriage. Could you imagine if Cardi B would have cheated on Offset? These same “men” would never be fighting this hard for this relationship to work. But I digress. See, folks hate when Black women stick up for themselves, have standards and are empowered in their decisions. In addition, folks routinely shame Black women who refuse to allow their relationships to be solely based on pain, one-sided sacrifice, trauma and infidelity. It literally makes folks’ blood boil to see Black women unbossed, unbothered and happy on their own terms—just ask Ciara .
