Mom Demands Answers After Video Shows Her Son Brutally Beaten By White Kids In School

See original here:

Source: Justin Yoast / EyeEm / Getty An extremely disturbing video made its way to the Internet showing a White kid beating a Black boy in the locker room of a Florida middle school. The clip shows the kid holding him down and hitting him repeatedly while other students watch. An adult was nowhere to be found, according to the clip. The mother of the Black kid, Lauren Springfield made a Facebook post about the incident that has since gone viral. “Yesterday, my son was attacked. In a violent, malicious manner while in the school locker room at Blake Academy in Polk County,” she started. “The school nurse called us first and let us know our son was in the nurses office and could not give us any additional information. I immediately left my office and went to the school – not one school administrator contacted me on the way to the school. I got to the school to find a welt on my son’s forehead and back of head, a cut above his eye brow and bruising all around his eye.” Springfield said it wasn’t until she received videos from parents of a high school student that she realized her son was brutally attacked. “You hear the kids not only cursing but encouraging the attack and not stepping in to stop what was happening,” Springfield wrote. She said she asked the school administration how they would respond to the video and according to her, their response was “We can’t tell you.” Springfield went on to say, “This could have ended much differently, our child has one kidney and after getting kneed several times this could have resulted in permanent damage.” Springfield said she went to the courthouse in an attempt to get a restraining order against the kids. However, the judge argued that since the attack allegedly didn’t happen multiple times, Springfield would not be granted the protection for her son. “It only takes one hit for a child to die,” wrote Springfield. “How many more times would you like this to happen to our child or any other child? Throughout the entire attack this little boy laughed and smiled – and you think he won’t do it again?” Springfield also brought attention to the racial aspect of the violence. “I can guarantee you had this been a group of black students on a lone white student we would be having a completely different conversation. I am disheartened, I am tired, scared for my son and completely enraged.” Springfield finished off by saying some policy changes should be made to protect children. One Polk County school board member, Billy Townsend, responded to Springfield’s demands, writing on Facebook : “1) We as a district vastly overinterpret privacy rules so that a victim’s family receives little or no information about how we are protecting/preventing any further harm for their child. So even when a serious investigation is underway, as I believe it is here, the victim’s family doesn’t really perceive it. 2) I do not understand why we would send the child’s family to get a court injunction, rather than provide more robust engagement at the school/district level. Both of these seem like policy issues that we need to address quickly as a School Board.” Eventually, charges were brought against one of the students. The police and the superintendent of Polk County Public Schools held a press conference where they said that students were disciplined “on the school side” while one of the boys was charged with misdemeanor simple battery and has been suspended for 10 days. Biking While Black: Las Vegas Cops Killed Black Biker After Stopping Him Over Missing Reflectors

View original post here:

Source: South_agency / Getty A Black Las Vega s man was arrested last week after police initially stopped him for not having proper lighting and reflectors on his bicycle. According to reports, 50-year-old Byron Lee Williams raced off with the officers giving chase, but the man died in their custody after they subdued him. Local outlet KTNV reports : The incident began shortly before 6 a.m. near Bonanza Road and Martin Luther King Boulevard. Asst. Sheriff Charles Hank said that patrol officers from the Bolden Area Command came across a man who was riding a bicycle without a safety light. When they attempted to stop him, he took off. The patrol officers began chasing him. Initially the man, who has been identified as Byron Lee Williams, was still on his bike but then he began trying to escape on foot. The officers were eventually able to catch up with him and told the man to get on the ground. While being cuffed, Williams told the officers he couldn’t breathe. As they were taking him to the patrol car, Williams appeared to pass out. Officers called for assistance and the Las Vegas fire department arrived several minutes later. Medical personnel began treating Williams on the scene before transporting him to Valley Hospital. Williams was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The family of Williams is demanding answers in the case, most notably wondering why officers cut off their recording equipment while also ignoring Williams’ pleas that he could not breathe. Officials in Las Vegas are examining the incident, which took place last week Thursday. We’re watching the body camera footage showing the @LVMPD arrest of Byron Lee Williams. He later died. #NYFWNOIR: It Took Over 2 Suitcases Of Hair To Create The Stunning Hairstyles For The Studio 189 NYFW Show

Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James Backstage at the Studio One Eighty Nine show was an amalgamation of melanin magic. Rosario Dawson and her longtime friend Abrima Erwiah have created a social enterprise that supports African fashion and sustainable practices. On Tuesday afternoon, the brand showed their Spring/Summer 2020 collection and had 60 models to show all their vibrant looks using African artisanal practices. Every model had a different hairstyle and TRESemmé products were utilized to help create the looks. Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James The Lead Hairstylist for the Spring/Summer 2020 collection was Unilever Hair Expert and Celebrity Hairstylist, Ursula Stephen . Stephen explained, “Typically when you see a show, most of the girls have the same look, even if they don’t have any hair, they are forcing a look into that hair.” This was not the case for this show. She continued, “For us when I walked in and saw the designs, they looked cultural and could be African, and it would be easy to do braids and all that, twists and all that, cultural look, but we wanted to do the opposite. We felt that natural, or loving cultural, doesn’t mean you have to be natural. Natural is a within type of thing.” Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James While backstage I saw people having their locs retwisted and tied up, models getting mini afro buns, hair being blown out into straight looks. Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James Stephen explained to me while giving a model a weave, “We just decided we are going to take everybody and enhance their individual look. If you have natural, kinky coarse hair we’re gonna have fun with it! Create a fun shape. Do something different.” Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James The main hairstyle was reverse cornrows with a bang. She explained, “This is why I flipped the braids. I was like, “You know what? I want to incorporate our culture but I also want to show that we could be elevated and we can still be high fashion with our hair. Who says you can’t have a bang with natural hair? Lemme flip it, turn it around, give her a fringe in the front and a surprise in the back.” This hairstyle is great for the girl with a short to medium afro. There was SO much hair backstage. Stephen revealed that there were at least two suitcases full, “probably more.” She shared that women should keep extensions in their house to help switch up their look. “You have options and it’s inexpensive. You can get marley twists and you twist it, you pin it on top of you head. Just create shapes.” You can also just add hair to help make your hair bigger. “That’s what we did with Damarys,” Stephen explained. “She’s closing the show and she had a small afro, and I said, ‘You know what? I want your hair to be a lot more dramatic than what it is.’ We just added natural hair and made her fro extra large.” Source: Mike Coppola / Getty Black hair is so beautiful and it was illustrated during the Studio One Eighty Nine runway show as each model walked down the runway. That’s the beauty of black hair. You can actually be a different person every day if you want. You can literally straighten your hair out and have bone straight hair, if you want today. You can wet it and it go back into your natural texture, then you can do braids, you can do twists. Our hair is beautiful! That is really our magic, is our hair. Who Dis? Celebs That Are Almost Unrecognizable After Their Looks Changed

Source: Xilla Valentine / No Kable Productions It’s human nature to change your appearance every so often in attempt to align with how you feel inside. No wonder the classic Coco Chanel proverb that “a woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life” rangs so true for so many people. The real MVPs of evolution and change are Black Women. We can go from short hair, to long waves to an afro or Box braids all in one week. The DMX Challenge is proof that we can be whoever we want, any day of the week, and still manage to look like ourselves. But what about the folks whose looks have changed so drastically that they look nothing like themselves? Like The Weeknd , whose new mustache and weird makeup job almost made him unrecognizable to fans. The Weeknd Debarge https://t.co/4Czrs8PhRH — Makayla (@LayDaye) September 10, 2019 Often times, celebs take a mini hiatus from their work, and come back looking like a whole new person. Or they start making more money and we start to notice the not so subtle adjustments they’ve made to themselves. Or, some stars adopt a much healthier lifestyle and start to lose weight and glow from the inside out. Whatever the case may be, it’s their body. Their mind. Their choice. Just know that you can’t get anything past the Internets. Hit the flip for more celebs who changed their look over time.

Koil Kween: Tracee Ellis Ross And Her Carefully Curated Mane Cover Essence Magazine’s Hair Issue

Source: Itaysha Jordan / Itaysha Jordan/ Essence Magazine Tracee Ellis Ross Covers Essence Magazine Hair Issue Seriously though. Is there anything that Tracee Ellis Ross can’t do? The actress and CEO of Pattern Beauty graced the cover of Essence Magazine’s October Hair Issue and literally stopped the Internet with flawless flicks from the spread. Source: Itaysha Jordan / Itaysha Jordan/ Essence Magazine In the mag, Miss Ross: The Beauty Boss gushed about the new chapter in her life as the creator and founder of her very own Hair Care Company which celebrates the different curl patterns of naturalistas all over the globe. “It’s called Pattern because it is about the magical patterns of our hair. I am launching a haircare line for curly, coily and tight, textured hair to empower people and meet the unmet needs of our community at a price point we can afford, because we know that we need a lot of product in all this hair.” But just as the case is for most women of color, it was a long, hard journey for Tracee to embrace the beauty in her Blackness. “It took me way longer than I wish it had. I’d catch glimpses of people who saw beauty in ways I had missed because of the blinders society gave me. Then one day I was watching a Nina Simone documentary and I thought: Wait. It should be her name next to the word “beauty.” Why was I sold the wrong vision? My heart knows that’s beauty.” Source: Itaysha Jordan / Itaysha Jordan/ Essence Magazine However, despite how long the journey to pride took, the Black-ish star has always been relatable and woke. “A lot of people are awake right now, and thank God. I think I’m learning. I think I’m growing. There is a war that is happening, a fight for control over women’s bodies. Children in cages. Concentration camps in our country, right now. It keeps me up at night.” We love of woke, inspiring CEO! Pattern Beauty Products are officially available for purchase at patternbeauty.com . Hit the flip for more Tracee Ellis Ross in Essence Magazine’s October Hair Issue.

Rest In Peace: ‘Fresh Prince’ And ‘Martin’ Actor Passes Away At Age 72

Source: Amy Graves / Getty Actor John Wesley Passes Away At Age 72 John Wesley, Vietnam War vet and actor on 90s sitcoms such as Fresh Prince and Martin , has passed away at age 70 according to the NYDailyNews . Wesley, a Louisiana native, reportedly died in Los Angeles after an extended bout with multiple myeloma as confirmed by his manager Gerry Pass. Wesley studied classical acting and earned a master degree in fine arts from the University of California in San Diego, he told Ron Brewington on “The Actor’s Choice.” He served in the army during the Vietnam War and garned his first credited role playing a cop in a 1963 episode of “My Three Sons.” The classically trained actor (master degree in fine arts from the University of California San Diego) played a character named “Dr. Hoover” in a hilariously CLASSIC episode of Fresh Prince that you can watch below. Wesley told Ron Brewington, host of “The Actor’s Choice”, that comedy had always been a tool he used to break down the barriers that he felt white powerbrokers put up against Black actors. “That’s been my tactic over the years,” he said. “This is a really tricky place where we’re at now. Because the guys who are the guys who guard the door are still mostly white males with power. And you’ve got to get on their good side to get these jobs.” It wasn’t just white folks who found Wesley entertaining, we did too and we are appreciative of the talent that he shared with us. Rest in peace, John Wesley.
