Beauty Advice: Tips For Growing Out Your Eyebrows And Lashes

Source: moodboard / Getty When it comes to flaunting a flawless face, any makeup lover will tell you that eyebrows and lashes are easily part of the equation. Not only do they work to shape your face and create a dramatic effect, but on days when you’re doing the bare minimum, shapely eyebrows and full lashes are all you need! While many makeup mavens who are not genetically blessed with the perfect eyebrows or lashes rely on makeup products to get the job done, there is a way to get your own into tip-top shape. You may be thinking about microblading but, to be honest, we’re looking to keep things simple and all-natural! Read through to get some useful tips on how to take your barely-there eyebrows and lashes to a full and healthy state. Castor oil is your best friend.  High in omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin E and other minerals, this oil already works wonders in growing hair, so why wouldn’t it work on your eyebrows and lashes? Simply apply a few drops of castor oil (Jamaican Black Castor Oil is best) to the palm of your hands. Grab a clean spoolie and rub it in the oil in a circular motion. Dab on your hands to catch the excess and apply to your eyebrows and lashes. This method is best right before bedtime to give the oil time to work its magic. Aloe vera is not only for your hair.  Natural methods always reign supreme when it comes to hair growth and aloe vera is no exception. Containing the compound aloenin, this plant promotes seamless hair growth. Peel the outer leaf of the aloe and scoop out the gel. You can add the gel to a blender with a few drops of castor oil and blend until you reach a watery consistency. Use a spoolie to apply the mixture to your brows and lashes. Refrigerate after each use. Avoid overplucking, over waxing and lash extensions.  While these methods can seem like a quick fix to give you beautiful lashes and brows, the damage can be long-lasting. Give your self a break from these methods to start seeing a change in your hair growth. Skip moisturizers and creams. Let’s be clear, applying a moisturizer daily is recommended for hydrated skin. However, when applying your moisturizer of choice, it can clog your hair follicles. Apply your facial creams around your brows and lashes to maintain your hair’s natural breathing process for growth. Add a multivitamin to your diet. Multivitamins with biotin and vitamin B complex are great for promoting hair growth. Vitamin A and C are also great for blood and oxygen circulation to stimulate the hair follicles. Ever Had An Awkward Encounter: This Spongebob Meme Is For You

Source: Bryan Bedder / Getty Folks on social media can find the smallest, oldest, most relatable things to go viral and make a new mark on pop culture. First there was good ol’ Arthur (and his balled up fist) who got meme-ified and became the official “no longer for kids” cartoon after Black Twitter got its hands on it — and everyone else followed suit. And this year in particular, the Spongebob memes have been the highlight of the Internet. There’s a Spongebob moment for each experience you encounter in life. And now we have “Aight Imma Head Out” Bob. The meme shows a fed up Spongebob getting out of his favorite chair dipping off when something uncomfortable happens. For example: Spongebob Meme Thread Plz pic.twitter.com/TdkWZh894f — lemmeseedemaliens (@lemmecdemaliens) August 29, 2019   Or this one: These Spongebob memes are cracking me up. Idris Elba To Star In Film About Philadelphia’s Black Cowboys

T hroughout his entire career London-born actor Idris Elba has used his craft as an avenue to bring narratives about Black pioneers to the big screen. Six years after playing the role of South African revolutionary Nelson Mandela in the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom , Elba will now star in a movie about the unsung stories of Philadelphia’s Black cowboys, Deadline reported. Production is now underway on #ConcreteCowboys , with Idris Elba starring with #StrangerThings ‘ Caleb McLaughlin https://t.co/QGTQhbG0nM — Deadline Hollywood (@DEADLINE) August 8, 2019 The film—titled Concrete Cowboys —is centered on the Fletcher Street Stables. Fletcher Street is a Black horsemanship community that has been in existence for over a century. It was cultivated as an outlet to help Black men and boys escape communities plagued by violence and crime and learn about the importance of discipline and responsibility. The film follows the journey of a teen who was sent to live with his father in North Philly. While adjusting to the new environment and bearing witness to the impact of gentrification and poverty, the teen discovers the community’s urban cowboy culture and explores how horse riding is used to escape the dire circumstances faced by those in the neighborhood. Concrete Cowboys is loosely based on a book penned by author Greg Neri titled Ghetto Cowboy . Actors Caleb McLaughlin , Jharrel Jerome , Byron Bowers , and Lorraine Toussaint star alongside Elba in the film. The film is being produced by Elba’s production company Green Door Pictures, Tucker Tooley Entertainment, and Lee Daniels Entertainment. Ricky Staub will serve as the film’s director. “Idris had expressed a desire to be involved in projects uplifting to the African American community,” Staub told Philly Mag in an interview. “Idris has a huge heart in wanting to uplift new voices and to make an impact on the community.” As for the real-life “Concrete Cowboys,” they’re excited to see the story be transformed into a film. Ika Bradford says Fletcher Street Stables has forever impacted his life. “I had my time and share of doing this and doing that, all the bad things that ended me up in jail. Just being around the horses keep me calm,” he told ABC 6 . “Just have something to do. Stay out of trouble. Take your mind out of things in the hood, they’re playing basketball in the hood, but there’s nothing like a horse stable, I’ll tell you that.” The film is currently in production and there is no word on when it is slated to be released. Recap: BOSSIP Writers Detail How To Smash The Internet To Smithereens With #NABJ19 Headline Writing Working Shop

Source: BOSSIP / NABJ19 Recap: Bossip Staff Takes On #NABJ19 We’re happy to report that BOSSIP was especially present for NABJ this past week , hosting our own workshop on comprising the viral headline! The convention for The National Association of Black Journalists or NABJ kicks off every year for journalists, students, and media-related professionals. There, folks learn firsthand key strategies in media, socialize professionally, and seek career opportunities. This year it took place in sunny & humid Miami, Florida. Source: @AieshaArab / IG The workshop was hosted by BOSSIP’s deputy editor Danielle Canada who emceed a panel of our viral headline experts on staff, including senior editor Jennifer H. Cunningham, Aiesha Letman (myself), Jason Lee and, Alex Ford. Bruce Wright, managing editor of our fellow Interactive One site News One was also there to assist. In the workshop, our writers were asked the FAQs behind the manufacturing of a standout headline, regardless of the voice of the publication. Attendees learned about the importance of headline writing as it pertains to ideation and creating viral moments. And…when is a headline too far? Jason Lee was there to assist with the latter. Of course, this question was directed at our site, specifically.  So, how do we not “cross the line”? What is offensive or ‘racist’ to white folks? Jason says, ‘As far as (mayo), aioli and those sort of things…if white people are offended by certain things, then that’s fine but the dynamic is different. We are a Black site, we are Black people, normally we’re the oppressed people. So, if the worst you have to deal is being called a ‘mayo-packet’ behind somebody who did something racist, something stupid, then in my mind, you kinda have to chalk that.’ New One’s Bruce Wright had an important point to add, saying: ‘I don’t think we should only single out Black media for doing what the original media created and is still doing on now.’ Alex Ford probably in one short sentence gave the crux of what you need to create a viral moment. ‘We’re not just writing these headlines for you to just see them and laugh. If you read some of the posts, their actually well-written, comedically. Also, your use of language. Find that one word that represents what you’re trying to say. Word choice is important. ‘ BOSSIP is proud to be a completely unique voice at the intersection of Black culture, entertainment, and political-awareness. We would like to send a HUGE thank you to everyone who came to check us out at NABJ19. We hope to meet you again!

Chicago Nonprofit Aims To Combat Diabetes Within The Black Community

Link:

A frican Americans are disproportionately affected by the growing diabetes epidemic. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services , Black adults are 80 percent more likely than whites to be diagnosed with diabetes. A new Chicago-based nonprofit is striving to reverse the alarming trend. According to Black News , The Suga Project is creating a space to foster conversations surrounding ways to combat Type 2 diabetes and the overall importance of Black health. The organization—which was founded by Natalie Pauls —was established to provide resources for African Americans who are battling diabetes and for others who want to get involved in addressing the epidemic. Cognizant of the rising numbers of Black folks who are affected by the disease, Pauls wanted to create a platform where they could feel empowered and supported. The Suga Project provides informative courses that teach individuals how to lead healthier lifestyles. “The numbers are startling,” Pauls said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “African Americans are four times more likely to have an amputation due to diabetes complications. African American women are dying at rates greater than any other group of women in history.” The organization’s overarching goal is to see a decrease in the number of diabetes cases within the Black community. Several individuals and organizations are working to spread awareness about diabetes amongst African Americans. Earlier this year actress Viola Davis teamed up with the pharmaceutical company Merck to narrate a documentary titled A Touch of Sugar that captures how the disease is impacting communities across the country. “I’m one of the 84 million American adults living with prediabetes and I’m sharing my story for the first time in an effort to inspire others to take action against the type 2 diabetes epidemic,” she said in a statement about the film. “When you look at the facts, there’s nothing harmless about diabetes – it’s a chronic disease that needs to be taken seriously if we’re going to get it under control.” SEE ALSO: Viola Davis Spreads Awareness About Diabetes Through New Documentary GirlTrek Movement Inspires Black Women To Take Charge Of Their Health [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3459090″ overlay=”true”]

B lack women are breaking racial barriers in higher education. Earlier this month Amber Johnson made history by becoming the first African American woman to earn a doctorate in computer science at Purdue University. Florida State University student Kalisa Villafana  also hit a historic milestone by becoming the first Black woman to graduate from the university with a nuclear physics doctoral degree, WFTS reported. MAKING HISTORY Kalisa Villafana will become Florida State University's first black female graduate to earn a doctoral degree in nuclear physics. https://t.co/r6tIZ89MDw — ABC Action News (@abcactionnews) August 2, 2019 Villafana has always had a passion for STEM. After earning her bachelor’s degree from Florida A&M University and spending a brief stint of time working overseas in Trinidad and Tobago she made the decision to further her education and pursue another degree at FSU. Villafana was aware that her educational journey was something bigger than herself. She wanted to use it as an avenue to inspire individuals from underrepresented groups to enter the STEM field. Outside of excelling academically, she served as a mentor for students of color who aspired to go to graduate school. “In Trinidad, many people don’t know how to get to the United States and get a Ph.D. that’s paid for by the school. They don’t know how to go from being an international student from the islands to a doctor in the U.S.,” she told the news outlet. “Hopefully, they see that they too can be a physicist. You may not see a lot of us, but we’re there. We’re out there.” Villafana—who is now the 96th Black woman in America to hold a Ph.D. in physics—credits her family and friends for providing her with a strong support system. As far as the next step in her career, she will serve as a process engineer at the Intel Corporation.
