Viola Davis Spreads Awareness About Diabetes Through New Documentary

View post:

T he racial health disparity surrounding diabetes is on the rise. According to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health , in the U.S. Black adults are almost twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes in comparison to white adults. Actress Viola Davis is utilizing her platform as an avenue to spread awareness about this matter in hopes of reversing this alarming trend. She recently joined forces with the pharmaceutical company Merck to narrate a documentary that captures how the disease is impacting communities across the country, PR Newswire reported. Merck and Viola Davis to Debut A Touch of Sugar During Tribeca Film Festival® https://t.co/3WpwPDBYIt — PRNhealth (@PRNhealth) April 25, 2019 The film—titled A Touch of Sugar —is a part of a larger initiative led by Merck called America’s Diabetes Challenge: Get to Your Goals . The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Thursday. For Davis, the diabetes struggle is personal. She herself has prediabetes, two of her sisters were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and one of her family members died after battling with the disease. “I’m one of the 84 million American adults living with prediabetes and I’m sharing my story for the first time in an effort to inspire others to take action against the type 2 diabetes epidemic,” she said in a statement. “My sisters are both struggling with type 2 diabetes and my aunt also died from complications of the disease. Growing up, we just said they had ‘the sugar,’ which didn’t sound that concerning. But, when you look at the facts, there’s nothing harmless about diabetes – it’s a chronic disease that needs to be taken seriously if we’re going to get it under control.” The film explores how culture and socio-economic issues are intertwined with the epidemic. Conrod Kelly who serves as the Executive Director of the Diabetes Franchise at Merck says the film was created to put “a much-needed spotlight on the real people affected by it firsthand,” and hopes that it inspires people to take action. Films like A Touch of Sugar are needed to spread awareness about the ever-growing epidemic. According to the news outlet, 30 million adults in the U.S. are living with diabetes. In the movie-like visual she shows off her impressive pole-dance skills. Twigs, like the music, takes her time and builds into a wild scene. “When I wrote ‘Cellophane’ over a year ago, a visual narrative came to me immediately,” she explained on Instagram. “I knew I had to learn how to pole-dance to bring it to life, and so that’s what I did.” The latter may be an understatement, considering the level at which the 31-year-old multidisciplinary performer has mastered the genre. This time last year, Twigs revealed that she underwent laparoscopic surgery to have six fibroid tumors removed from her uterus. Some of the massive tumors were larger than fruit. We’re glad she’s doing great and looking even better. Check her out.

Bossip Exclusive: Shannon Sharpe Talks Inspiration To Join Home Depot’s Retool Your School Campaign, Gives $500,000 To 10 HBCU’s

Source: Nigel Degraff / Nigel Degraff Shannon Sharpe Talks Home Depot Retool Your School HBCU ‘s are the pride of Black academia in America and often times they are not as privileged to have the funding that other PWI’s do. Fortunately, companies like Home Depot are not only aware of that issue, but they’re willing to do something about it. Monday afternoon in Atlanta, Shannon Sharpe, Rickey Smiley, and Laz Alonso linked up with the good folks at Home Depot for the $500,000 giveaway finale of the company’s Retool Your School campaign. Source: Nigel Degraff / Nigel Degraff Nine HBCU’s were awarded $50,000 a piece to rejuvenate parts of the campus that are in need. In order to receive the money, each college had to come up with a campaign to tally the most votes from consumers and one school secured the bag with the first ever “Campaign of the Year Award”. BOSSIP got a chance to speak to Super Bowl Champion and NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe at the event and got some insight on how he got involved and what his HBCU, Savannah State University, means to him: BOSSIP : How did you first get involved with Home Depot Retool Your School? Shannon Sharpe : Anytime it’s something to help historically Black college, I want to be involved. I went to an HBCU understand the economic hardships that a lot of these institutions face and Home Depot is doing a really good thing today. The Shannon Sharpe you see here was cultivated at Savannah from 1986-1989 I had some great professors and doctors who cared about me and help me find out about myself. This is my chance to pay Savannah State back and those professors who took time to instill wisdom and knowledge in me. I wish we could have a $20 million endowment like Harvard but this is a really good opportunity for myself, Rickey (Smiley) who went to Alabama State, to give back. I don’t think a lot of people realize that I went to an HBCU. Most times they assume if you went to the NFL or played professional sports that you went to Notre Dame or Michigan or Nebraska or something like that. BOSSIP : What advice would you give high school athletes who want to play professionally but are afraid that they won’t get the exposure at an HBCU that they would at a PWI? SS : When I went to Savannah State my college coach, Bill Davis, God rest his soul, told me “Son, if you’re good, they’ll find you.” Because I was gonna transfer to the University of Miami, but I believed I was that good. I believed the NFL would find me. I believed that once I got to the NFL I would show that my skill set was as good or better than all those guys. I’m a “prove it” type of guy, ok, you don’t have to believe me. Source: Nigel Degraff / Nigel Degraff None of this would be happening without Home Depot Senior Marketing Manager Melissa Brown. Her vision to make this campaign a success and her love of HBCUs has created an incredible opportunity for our beloved schools to look their best and represent themselves proudly. Special shout out to the Westlake High School marching band who pulled up to keep the packed auditorium entertained.

Read the original:

Talk about an Easter miracle. After attacking a Black woman on the street, a white Florida man learned the hard way the a bunny is most definitely strong enough to whoop his a**. According to Click Orlando , over the weekend, a Black woman in Orlando got into a fight outside a comedy club when a white man bumped into her and then spit on her. In a video of the attack that went viral, Antoine McDonald, dressed in a Easter Bunny costume, jumps to the woman’s defense, laying paws on the man after he witnessed the man physically attacking the woman. “I don’t know if he was bullying her or what,” McDonald told Click Orlando. “[But] I am going to say that I am happy so that people know that they just can’t spit on African-Americans. Especially African-American females and think that it’s OK.” Apparently, the fight ended when an Orlando police officer arrived to the scene and split everyone up. While McDonald may have appeared to have been fearless, he admitted he was concerned he might be arrested for assault. “The thought went through my head when the cop came over, but you know I didn’t leave. I didn’t run. I said, ‘You know what? This man deserved it.’ You know, if I have to be arrested for this to prove a point that this shouldn’t be happening, then so be it.” Luckily he didn’t get in trouble. Our hero. The One Story: Black Women Are Working To Eliminate The Racial Stigma Of Marijuana

See the article here:

O ne important yet unsung aspect of the legal cannabis industry is changing the conversation around how Black people are viewed within the larger marijuana context. “People genuinely use cannabis to have a better quality of life,” said Hope Wiseman, founder and owner of the Mary & Main medical marijuana dispensary in Maryland, citing the plant’s effective use following chemotherapy as a prime example. The stigma of the plant has largely been overshadowed by its purpose, which, contrary to popular belief, is not just to get stoned. Marijuana propaganda combined with unbalanced media coverage over the years has for many people distorted marijuana’s therapeutical benefits. Much of that is explained to patients as they navigate the complicated process to legally gain access to dispensaries and buy “cannabis products that have been tested and effective for their conditions,” Melinda Toussaint, co-owner of MariCare Wellness in Maryland and a family nurse practitioner, said. Watch the third installment of The One Story’s video about women and weed to find out more how Black women are among the leaders in the marijuana industry to end the racial stigma associated with non-whites and cannabis.
