The Young Stars of ‘The Hate U Give’ Film on Police Brutality & Code Switching As Black Males [EXCLUSIVE]

Code-switching and police brutality are two realities that too many Black Males are forced to face. In the upcoming movie, The Hate U Give a teenaged girl (Amandla Stenberg) witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend (Algee Smith) at the hands of a police officer. These issues are at the center of the film. The film’s young stars Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, and TJ Wright, who play Stenburg’s brothers in the film, visited Studio One to talk about how they deal with code-switching between race and class and the subject of police brutality in their personal and professional lives. The Hate U Give, which stars Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby and also features Common, Anthony Mackie, and Issa Rae, is in theaters nationwide on October 19th. A new report in the Huffington Post details the racist social media behavior of the acting EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler. One of those behaviors was “liking” a Facebook meme of President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama staring at a banana. Harkening back to the monkey/ape/gorilla epithet that has been hurled at Black folks for hundred of years. Like most cowardly bigots, Wheeler played dumb when he was confronted and questioned about these “likes”. He replied to HuffPo via email saying: “Over the years, I have been a prolific social media user and liked and inadvertently liked countless social media posts,” Wheeler said. “Specifically, I do not remember the post depicting President Obama and the First Lady. As for some of the other posts, I agreed with the content and was unaware of the sources.” Wheeler’s other “likes” come in the form of right-wing conspiracy theories, conservative extremist rhetoric and other distasteful social media hot takes. F**k this guy.

Taylor Swift Returns! See Her First TV Performance in 3 Years!

In a powerful and candid Instagram post this week,  Taylor Swift urged citizens to take action next month and vote in the midterm elections. Not long afterwards, the singer took an action herself that she had not taken in three years: She performed on stage at an awards show. Indeed, Swift opened the 2018 American Music Awards on Tuesday night with a rendition of “I Did Something Bad,” reminding viewers everywhere that she deserves the honor she would later win at the ceremony. (Swift was named Artist of the Year and, in the process, became the most decorated female artist in American Music Awards history.) The 28-year-old pop sensation donned a sparkly long-sleeve leotard with over-the-knee leather black boots for her wildly-anticipated performance. She also brought the drama with smoke and a giant snake (!!!!!!!) – which has been her Reputation tour logo and which has been a response to being called a snake years ago by Kim Kardashian – behind her on stage. It was clear those in attendance were psyched to have Swift back in their lives. “They’re burning all the witches, even if you aren’t one/They got their pitchforks and proof,” Swift sings in the featured track. Having received some criticism from Republicans for not supporting any of their candidates in her aforementioned social media message, Swift did not back down at the AMAs. In her Artist of the Year acceptance speech, she didn't take any side… but she did remain political. “Thank you so much for this,” she said on stage, adding: “And I just wanted to make a mention of the fact that this award, and every single award given out tonight, were voted on by the people. And you know what else is voted on by the people? “The midterm elections on 6 November. Get out and vote – I love you guys.” And we love you, Taylor. Where does she go now after her U.N. gig? Haley has already ruled out a 2020 presidential run. And she’s unlikely to challenge South Carolina’s Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham for his seat, according to The State . “I look forward to supporting the president in the next election,” she said at the press meeting, leaving the door open to perhaps a fulltime position with Trump’s re-election campaign. There was also many job opportunities in the White House, such as replacing White House Chief of Staff John Kelly . If that job doesn’t interest Haley, she could take over whatever projects Ivanka Trump has been working on in the White House. They would, in essence, replace each other—with Ivanka going to the United Nations. Haley has already penned one book, titled Can’t Is Not An Option . She may be planning to write another book—one that could pave the way for a 2024 presidential run. If she’s leaving her post under negative circumstances, there’s also the possibility of a tell all book about the Trump administration. I n less than a month away from the midterm elections, a man who has admitted to not voting or reading books is going to the White House. Yep, after faithfully stroking Trump ‘s ego,  Kanye West  finally got his invite to the White House to stroke 45 in person. See Also: Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In Prison For Sexual Assault Conviction Lyin’ Sarah Huckabee Sanders  reportedly said Kanye will have lunch with the president and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner . “West hopes to discuss two key issues during his visit at the White House: job opportunities for ex-convicts and ways to increase manufacturing jobs in and around his hometown of Chicago,”  CNN wrote. Oh, please. In what universe would Kanye West have the ability to talk about those issues when he is a “ proud ” non-reader of books, said he believes that slavery was a choice,  Malcolm X  wasn’t relatable and has r epeatedly admitted to not voting a day in his life ? CNN also reported that “[o]ther topics of discussion will include prison reform, how to prevent gang violence and reducing violence in Chicago, Sanders said.” Maybe Kanye can start with how the president wants to reinforce stop-and-frisk , the unconstitutional police tactic that terrorized the lives of Black and brown people, or his dangerous calls for “more” law and order — a comment he just made a police convention  on Monday. At least when his wife,  Kim Kardashian , visited the White House, she an agenda to get Alice Marie Johnson out of prison. Kanye’s agenda is clearly himself. Moreover, he got the White House visit that Barack Obama wouldn’t give him . Lastly, if you have never voted a day in your life, you should not be sitting in the White House, especially if you are a rich, privileged celebrity who isn’t affected by the consequences of not voting. According to The Jasmine Brand , Nicki’s former stylist, Maher Jridi is claiming the rapper allegedly didn’t return certain garments she wore. Jridi and Nicki have been close for quite sometime and he even worked with her for the H&M promo. The stylist doesn’t understand why Nicki wore the outfits, but didn’t return them and if they have their day in court she will have to speak on the situation.
