Rent a Movie, Get a Tan

I doubt many tears are being shed for the slow demise of Blockbuster’s overpriced rentals, late-fees, and huge selection of direct-to-video horror clunkers. But independent video stores are another story. Sure that snobby video clerk made fun of you for renting How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days , but that’s part of their charm! Plus that clerk was right. In any case, it looks like cinephiles can rest easy because local video stores have a new, sure-fire survival strategy: tanning beds.

Andrew Garfield Talks to Movieline About Never Let Me Go, Spider-Man, and ‘Death Around the Corner’

Andrew Garfield’s lunch arrived before he did this afternoon in Toronto: a light salad with chicken and broccoli, vinaigrette on the side, and six slices of tomatoes. Digging into the greens, one of the journalists gathered to discuss Garfield’s new film Never Let Me Go asked if this was actually the Spider-Man diet. “It’s food that I’m eating,” the actor replied. “So yes.” And so continued the enduring push-pull between the 27-year-old’s smoldering, carefully cultivated dramatic presence and his future as the Great White Blockbuster Hope.

‘Inception’: The Reviews Are In!

A cabal of critics isn’t lulled by the blockbuster dreamscape, with one deriding it for having ‘no soul, no sex and almost no joy.’ By Eric Ditzian Joseph Gordon-Levitt in “Inception” Photo: Warner Bros. It happened last winter with “Avatar” and it’s happening again with “Inception”: a hugely hyped, big-budget thrill-ride hits theaters, pretty much everyone loves it, yet there remain a few critics on the sideline defiantly shouting, “But it’s really not that good, people!” To those “Inception” haters, we might ask: Um, what exactly do you expect from a summer blockbuster? Because “Inception” is about as perfect as a summer blockbuster can be. Which is not to say it’s a perfect movie . No doubt, Christopher Nolan’s cinematic dreamscape has its fair share of flaws. But if you expect a ripping story line, whiz-bang special effects and the sense of being transported to another world, you will not be disappointed. In fact, you will be elated. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Dom Cobb, the brains behind a crew of thieves — including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page and Tom Hardy — with a peculiar specialty: They possess a machine that allows them to enter another person’s dreams and steal a secret. Their quest in “Inception” is to implant a memory, which requires them to create dreams worlds within dream worlds — and not get lost forever on the bewildering shores of their own subconscious. Will you be a fanatic or hater of “Inception”? There’s only one way to find out: Get thyself to the multiplex. And before you do, check out what the critics have to say. The Hype “The accomplishments of ‘Inception’ are mainly technical, which is faint praise only if you insist on expecting something more from commercial entertainment. That audiences do — and should — expect more is partly, I suspect, what has inspired some of the feverish early notices hailing ‘Inception’ as a masterpiece, just as the desire for a certifiably great superhero movie led to the wild overrating of ‘The Dark Knight.’ In both cases Mr. Nolan’s virtuosity as a conjurer of brilliant scenes and stunning set pieces, along with his ability to invest grandeur and novelty into conventional themes, have fostered the illusion that he is some kind of visionary.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times The Dissenters “If you approach ‘Inception’ with lowered expectations it’s a pretty good time … For all the complexity, craftsmanship and color of ‘Inception,’ it’s yet another of [Nolan’s] ultra-serious schematic constructions with no soul, no sex and almost no joy, all about some tormented dude struggling with his ill-managed Freudian demons. That same guy sitting next to me cracked that Nolan needs to stop seeing a therapist; there’s not nearly enough sublimation in his movies.” — Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com The Complexities “Nolan, who also wrote the screenplay, lays out the rules of his world deftly. A ton of exposition is needed, yet it never feels like exposition. Things are explained plausibly, and in just enough detail for us to get it — the last thing Nolan wants to do is over-explain himself. The information is parceled out carefully, not all at once, but not in a way that’s maddening or cryptic, either. Again, I marvel at how many films with concepts far simpler than this one never make sense at all, or else only make sense because they repeat themselves clumsily.” — Eric Snider, Cinematical.com The Performances ” ‘Inception’ benefits immensely from a series of low-key and thoroughly credible performances. DiCaprio, in a kind of riff on his ‘Shutter Island’ performance, embodies both the steel and the putty of Cobb, a man who can do remarkable things and is at the same time deeply vulnerable. Gordon-Levitt, stylish and lean as a dagger, makes a fine and steady cohort, Page is utterly at home in the intellectual depths of her character, and Hardy has a seedy nobility that suggests a John le Carr

The battle of the "awkward teenager" actor has begun!

http://www.newsweek.com/id/238281 Well, you know the typical actor. The quite awkward teenager that has a hard time talking to girls or saying anything to anyone for that matter. So you need someone find someone to play that part in a production? “Who you gonna call?!” Jesse Eisenberg or Michael Cera? Well for most of us we had our first taste of this type of acting when we watched young George Michael on Arrested Development. Later after that, Michael Cera continued this in many other movies like Juno, Super Bad, Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, and in August the blockbuster Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Also something to add, the character that Cera plays in “SPTW” is much different than the other roles that Cera has done in the past. Soon though a contender came into the ring. It started in Jesse Eisenberg played in Fierce People, then leading to more roles in films like Adventureland, Zombieland, The Education of Charlie Banks, and Holy Rollers. Now the question is which one is the leading man in awkward adolescence? Well there are many factors to think about. Which one has more corky charm? Which one is more identifiable with? Just who wins me over in my book? I would have to say Michael is the winner! He's got perfect timing when the mood calls for it. He seems to have that sweet kindness that's kind of a turn on. Jesse Eisenberg just comes off as generic and kind of a prick. So all in all that's where I stand, the facts are all there. But question is now turned to you: Jesse or Michael? http://www.newsweek.com/id/238281 added by: a_roxanne

Tito Ortiz Denies Attacking Jenna Jameson, Says She Relapsed on Oxycontin and Fell Down

Tito Ortiz has denied assaulting Jenna Jameson, claiming she relapsed on Oxycontin and lost her balance, rather than being thrown into the tub by him. Jenna claims Tito got very violent – throwing and injuring her – and that he’s falsely accusing her of Oxycontin addiction because he’s “very desperate.” Clearly, somebody’s story doesn’t add up. Whether or not officials determine there was an assault on Jenna Jameson remains to be seen, but the porn star’s version of events is quite disturbing. Jenna claims during an argument Monday morning she “said something very hurtful to his ego.” She alleges that Tito Ortiz then grabbed her and, “threw me into the bathtub and tore two ligaments in my shoulder.” A 911 call was placed around 9:45 a.m. Tito’s attorney, Chip Matthews, strongly denies that, saying … “He did not put his hands on her, he did not hit her, he did not do anything to her.” Matthews claims Tito found pills in Jenna’s pants pocket, and that when Tito confronted her she had an “emotional meltdown.” Jenna denies this . Tearful Tito said he hopes “Jenna will be okay” and “my parents have gone through addiction and I’m not going to let my family go through that.” The attorney stated Monday that Jenna has been battling addiction to the painkiller for more than a year now, and Tito has been protecting her. He claims Jenna relapsed and Tito confronted her about the drugs he claims he found. He suggested Jenna was high and just lost her balance. Jenna says Tito’s addiction allegation of her addiction to Oxycontin is, “completely false” and “the last nail in the coffin” for their relationship. Jameson added that “he’s trying to save his career” and hit the road for Vegas with two friends. Jenna’s dad is taking care of their twin sons.

Meet Sarah Palin, Professional Celebrity

Since August 2008, Sarah Palin has been one of the most famous political figures in the country. Since August 2009, she’s been one of our most famous figures, period. By August 2010, she may be unrivaled in the fame department. Last week, we reported how the former Alaska governor was working on a TV series about her home state, pitched by none other than famed producer Mark Burnett. A day before that, her publishers at HarperCollins announced she was embarking on a second book , a follow-up to her blockbuster best-selling memoir, Going Rogue . The day before that , she was the marquee guest on The Tonight Show , upstaging the likes of Olympic champion Shaun White and American Idol star Adam Lambert . No small feat there. Sarah Palin speaking at some event recently . At least on the surface, she remains engaged in politics, praising the Tea Party movement, and somewhat involved in journalism … or whatever Fox News is. A joke she told on The Tonight Show said it all: “The truth is, though, I’m glad that I’m not vice president. I would not know what to do with all that free time.” Bam! Seriously, though. No one works harder at being a celebrity than Sarah Palin, whether she’s hitting an Oscar gift suite or trying to cash in on teen mom Bristol Palin . But toward what end? A 2012 presidential run? Tens of millions? A daily talk show? Oprah-like, single-name dominance of pop culture and soon the entire universe? Everyone wondering exactly that simply enhances her star power, as does the blurring of the worlds of politics, celebrity and the media, which extends beyond her.
