Miami Cannibal Face Eating Attack Victim Ronald Poppo Speaks Out For First Time SMH: Two months after he was viciously attacked on the MacArthur Causeway by the so-called Miami Zombie, Ronald Poppo succinctly summed up the events that captured the country’s attention. “He attacked me,” Poppo said of Rudy Eugene. “He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically that’s all there is to say about it.” Poppo was left blind by the attack. After several surgeries at Jackson Memorial Hospital, he was transferred to the Perdue Medical Center, Jackson’s long-term care facility located in South Miami-Dade. Poppo said he does not understand why Eugene attacked him, “For a very short amount of time I thought he was a good guy,” Poppo said. “But he just went and turned berserk. He apparently didn’t have a good day at the Beach and he — he was coming back. And I guess he took it out, took it out on me or something. I don’t know.” Poppo’s statements were made and recorded during a July 19 interview with Miami homicide Det. Sgt. Altarr Williams and Det. Frankie Sanchez. CBS4 News obtained a copy of the taped interview on Wednesday. Sgt. Williams asked Poppo what Eugene was saying when he attacked him. “‘You, me, buddy, and nobody else here,’” Poppo recalled. “‘I’m gonna — gonna kill you.’ Or something like that, I guess.” “Did he say why?” Williams inquired. “No, he just started to scream,” Poppo explained. “And was talking kind of funny talk for a while too.” “What do you mean by funny talk?” Williams asked. “That I was gonna die. And he was gonna die,” Poppo said. “He must have been souped up on something.” During another part of the interview, Poppo said Eugene expressed frustration at not being able to “score” on Miami Beach. “He didn’t like the Beach,” Poppo said. “He said he wasn’t scoring there. He went to the Beach to score or something.” Although he seemed at peace with what happened to him, certain details of the attack were still vivid in Poppo’s mind. “He mashed my face into the sidewalk,” he said. “My face is all bent and mashed up. My eyes, my eyes got plucked out. He was strangling me in wrestling holds at the same time he was plucking my eyes out.” In a subsequent interview, Poppo told detectives that Rudy Eugene blamed Poppo for stealing his bible. Pieces of Eugene’s bible were found scattered along the causeway. Poppo said he never saw Eugene with a bible and denied taking it. “Did Mr. Eugene have anything in his hands?” Williams asked. “No.” Poppo said, his New York accent still evident despite decades of homelessness and living on the streets of Miami. “Mr. Eugene did not have any type of weapon. He did not use any weapon on me. He basically was using brute force.” “But before he attacked you,” Williams wondered, “did he have any clothes? Any materials? Any books? “No,” Poppo said. “I don’t recall him having anything.” Poppo also denied doing anything to provoke Eugene. “What can provoke an attack of that type?” Poppo asked matter-of-factly. “I certainly didn’t curse at the guy or say anything mean or nasty to him.” Although some media reports suggested the two men may have previously met — and that Eugene may have served Poppo in one of the homeless shelters — Poppo said he does not recall ever meeting or seeing Eugene before the day of the attack. The interview, however, also revealed Poppo’s confusion about some details. He thought Rudy Eugene had hitch-hiked across the causeway and may have gotten out of a car before attacking him. Video in the area shows there was no car. Poppo also recalled Eugene being dressed when he attacked him. In fact, Eugene had shed off his clothes and was naked. The very first time Poppo spoke to detectives — on the day of the attack — Poppo told them that Eugene appeared “out of the blue,” according to police reports obtained by CBS4 News. In one of those reports, dated May 26, 2012, Poppo claimed that when Eugene approached him Eugene said: “You’re going to be my wife and this is going to be a Lover’s Concerto.” He also claimed Eugene began singing, “Lover’s Concerto” — a song originally recorded by The Toys and later covered by The Supremes in 1966. But in addition to those moments that may show Poppo’s confusion, there are also moments on the tape that reveal the sadness of his life even before the attack. The detectives ask him, other than the hospital’s address, does Poppo have any other addresses they can use to reach him. “No, not at all,” Poppo said. “Too old.” And when they asked if he was employed, he responded: “I’m over 65. My name is Sam and on June 19th 2012 at 4:11pm , my dream came true. It all started last Friday when Justin tweeted that J&R music was selling wristbands for a Believe signing that was being held on Tuesday. Since my dad works in NYC, I immediately called him and told him he had to go down to J&R and see if there were any wristbands left. In an hour my dad called me up telling me he’d gotten me 4 wristbands. I started crying, tears were pouring all down my face . The day of the signing came. We left my house around 8:30am and got there around 10:30am. J&R already had about 300 girls there, so we quickly got behind the barricades and waited. The signing didn’t start until 3:00pm, when it was supposed to start around 2 but we didn’t mind as long as I still got to see his face. This all was so unreal to me I mentally didn’t believe I was about to meet the real Justin Bieber. We got to the front in about an hour and every single girl who walked out of J&R was crying. Before I could speak, they sent us through the door and there he was. That’s when it hit me. There’s was about 25 people in front of me in line, but I could see him in the distance. I was shaking so badly and tearing up when security led me to the table. Ryan was on the left and Justin was on the right. I said hi to Ryan and he waved to me, and then I was face to face with Justin. I said, “JUSTIN YOU’RE MY ROLE MODEL, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH” He looked up from signing my CD, made direct eye contact with me and said with a smile, “Thanks, love you too,” handed my CD and then I walked away. Once I got out of J&R I convulsed onto the floor and basically went into cardiac arrest. The world was so irrelevant to me and all that I could do was reply his voice in my head and clench my CD. Still, it was a little surprising to see just her pummel presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney out of the blue via Twitter Tuesday, only to delete a couple of the more inflammatory Tweets hours later. What did the iconic pop star and Oscar winner say? “If ROMNEY gets elected I don’t know if I can breathe same air as Him & his Right Wing Racist Homophobic Women Hating Tea Bagger Masters,” she Tweeted. That remark by the 65-year-old attracted a variety of responses , many shocked, and some more profane and negative than others. Cher replied to one hater: “Nice Mouth ! U learn that at Church, Gun Show,or how to press your Klan costume Klass?” (That, and the nasty tweet directed at her, are still up.) To another user who called her an “atten.whore,” Cher fired back, “Actually I’m Not & if u Dislike Me SO.. Jared Leto says they’ll be ‘bringing the world inside our process’ in an ‘intimate’ broadcast on Friday. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images For most of 2011 — when they weren’t setting Guinness World Records or winning MTV awards — 30 Seconds To Mars repeatedly ducked questions about their future, getting glib when asked about reports that they were calling it quits. Of course, much to the relief of the Echelon, on Tuesday, the band put any and all speculation of a split to rest, announcing that they had begun work on the follow-up to their This Is War album … which sort of raises the question: Was 30 STM just messing with us all along? Well, no. Turns out, they were about as unsure of their future as anyone else, as Jared Leto explained to MTV News. “We weren’t playing coy; we were on the road for two years, four months or so, and people started to ask us about a new album, and we didn’t have any plans. We didn’t know what the future was,” he explained. “We had been working for a really long time. We went from A Beautiful Lie right into the studio, right onto the road, I hadn’t had a significant break in years. So, at that point, I don’t think we knew what was going to happen for the future, so rather than make something up, we just told the truth: We didn’t know.” That uncertainty began to change as soon as the band finally took time to decompress following their record-setting world tour. Leto — who admitted he’s “always writing songs … it’s basically become a habit at this point” — took a glance at his notebooks and realized that he was feeling recharged and excited about the possibilities a new album would present. Though, before the band started work on the new album, they had to make one thing clear: This time around, they’d try very hard to not try very hard. “We made a commitment not to tour for all of 2012 … and I think that helped provide a lot of clarity,” Leto laughed. “And we realized there’s no way this new record could be like [ This Is War, ] because the last record was so conceptual and wrapped around this idea of conflict, because we were battling a corporation and being sued for $30 million. That was our lives, being hunkered down in the studio for a couple years, fighting this conglomerate. Of course, now, different time, different state of mind, so this album is definitely a dramatic departure.” That said, there are still some things 30 STM will keep the same on the new album … namely, incorporating the voices of their worldwide fanbase (they held a series of collaborative recording sessions — so-called “Summits” — during the making of This Is War ) and crisscrossing the globe to find inspiration. In fact, Leto rang in 2012 by making a trek to India, where inspiration was definitely not in short supply. “I was recording in India, and had an amazing experience over there, and came back with some really great material. And not so much that this is a World Beat record, it’s more about the experiences and how they’re influencing me in creative terms, emotional terms,” he explained. “I recorded a tabla player and an Indian folk singer, and I’m hoping I’m able to utilize that on a song. There was one afternoon that we climbed up above a city called Jodhpur, we were on a cliff with a 2,000-year-old fortress behind us. And they call it the blue city; all of the roofs and buildings are painted blue, and when you climb up this mountain you can get a great view of all of it. “So it was about sunset, and I had a portable set up, so we started recording. I had an external speaker, and the kids started to hear this song I was working on,” he continued. “So they started climbing out onto the rooftops of the city, and soon they were scrambling up the side of this mountain, and before we knew it, we were surrounded by dozens of these amazing Indian kids, singing and dancing along to this recording process … it was really mind-blowing.” And on Friday, fans will be able to get a first listen to some of 30 STM’s new material when the band hosts their second It’s a way of welcoming their worldwide fanbase into their laboratory, and Leto is thrilled to pull back the curtain. Because though they may be making a “dramatic departure” on album #4, some things will remain the same. “There are a lot of people around the world who just can’t jump on a plane and be part of a show, and that’s what we provide [with VyRT]. The event on Friday is different, it’s not based around an existing show, it’s a show we created and designed, and it’s going to be a lot of fun for us,” he said. “There will be some music, there will be some mistakes. We’re bringing the world inside our process, it will be intimate. I’m going to play some songs, some old songs, some new songs and then maybe some newer songs I’ve been working on. The singer took to Twitter to announce that she’s found a new hair color, but her fans will have to wait to find out what it is. “You know what’s great about having poison oak?! NOTHING #itchgasm Somehow in the middle of all this… I found time to change my hair color,” she wrote. “Finally… #takeaguess #foreverawalkingpantonepalette.” Despite not sharing too much about her hair color, she did offer up this tidbit of a tease about her current look: “Pretty stoked about my 90’s The Craft meets Garbage meets Tank Girl meets early No Doubt meets Ty from Clueless lewk 4 dis wknd #ohmygoth.” Perry had famously been sporting berry-blue hair since January, changing the hue and length but maintaining indigo as the base, strutting her blue self all over carpets, hitting up events and wearing it in an ad campaign for Adidas . “Of course, being Katy, she is a lot more edgy and she’s cooler and she likes to take a lot of risks.
