VMA Winners David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Others Became High-Profile Directors

Jonze went from directing Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” video to an Oscar nomination for “Being John Malkovich.” By Eric Ditzian David Fincher Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Somewhere between directing Will Smith and then Robert Pattinson on the big screen, Francis Lawrence took some time away from Hollywood to helm Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” music video. Before Dave Meyers stepped into Pink’s “Funhouse” video, he led Sophia Bush through the bloody terror of “The Hitcher.” There’s long been a connection between feature-length movies and music videos, and Lawrence and Meyers — both of whom are nominated for Best Direction at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — are just two of the folks who have worked in both mediums. Perhaps in the future, we might see Hype Williams, another of this year’s nominees, traveling from Jay-Z’s New York-centric “Empire State of Mind” to Tinseltown. Before the show goes live on Sunday, September 12, and we see which helmer triumphs, let’s take a look back at some of the most successful Hollywood directors who have won Best Direction at the MTV Video Music Awards. David Fincher Almost two decades before Fincher nabbed an Oscar nod for directing “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” he won the VMA directing award for Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” The next year he won again — this time for Madge’s “Vogue” — becoming the only director in MTV history to win Best Direction two years in a row. After collaborating with the Queen of Pop, Fincher went on to make his feature-film debut with “Alien 3” and then establish his own dark identity with the Brad Pitt-starring “Se7en.” His “Social Network,” a film about the founding of Facebook, is one of the fall’s most anticipated releases. Spike Jonze “Buddy Holly” begat “John Malkovich.” Jonze won his first Best Direction VMA for Weezer’s iconic “Happy Days”-inspired “Buddy Holly” video in 1995, then made his feature debut a few years later with the trippy “Being John Malkovich,” for which he received an Oscar nomination. Jonze has gone on to direct “Adaptation” and “Where the Wild Things Are,” which grossed over $100 million last year. Marc Webb Webb is the man whose job it is to rescue Spider-Man . Following the collapse of the Tobey Maguire-starring franchise earlier this year, Sony turned to Webb to reboot the boy wonder series. Last year, Green Day turned to the director to helm “21 Guns,” a somber take on their hard-charging tune. His feature debut, “(500) Days of Summer,” was nominated for two Golden Globes, including a Best Actor nod for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Mark Romanek Romanek has directed videos for everyone from David Bowie to Janet Jackson, earning himself MTV’s Video Vanguard Award in 1997. Then in 2004, thanks to Jay-Z’s “99 Problems,” Romanek won his first Best Direction VMA. By then he’d already directed Robin Williams in the thriller “One Hour Photo.” His latest, “Never Let Me Go,” an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s creepily elegant novel, starring Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last week. Jake Scott The images of sullen drivers stuck in an endless traffic jam set to the mournful sounds of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” are among the most indelible of ’90s-era music videos. Scott is the guy behind that vid, for which he won Best Direction. He’s also the guy behind Kristen Stewart’s upcoming drama “Welcome to the Rileys,” a troubling take on a runaway-turned-New Orleans stripper. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris There hardly seems to be a connection between the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 3-D gaming-style video for “Californication” and the Steve Carell-starring dark comedy “Little Miss Sunshine” … except that Dayton and Faris directed them both. The video won them Best Direction in 2000 and the movie was honored with four Oscar nominations in 2007, winning Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin. Samuel Bayer Bayer will forever be part of music history for directing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video. But he didn’t win his first Best Direction VMA until 2005, when he helmed Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” He won his second direction Moonman two year later, thanks to Justin Timberlake and “What Goes Around.” This past spring, he resurrected the “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise, guiding the horror flick to an impressive $32.9 million opening. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Britney Spears Responds To Sexual Harassment Suit

Statement on Spears’ website claims bodyguard is trying to ‘make a name for himself.’ By Kyle Anderson Britney Spears Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images On Wednesday, a bodyguard named Fernando Flores, formerly in the employ of Britney Spears, filed a lawsuit against the singer alleging that she not only sexually harassed him but also abused her two young sons Sean Preston and Jayden James. Eager to clear the air, Spears responded to the suit and the allegations today via her official website . “This lawsuit is another unfortunate situation where someone is trying to take advantage of the Spears family and make a name for himself,” the post reads. “The Department of Children and Family Services conducted a proper investigation surrounding Mr. Flores’ accusations and have closed the case without any further action. Ms. Spears and her attorneys have every expectation that this matter will be dismissed by the courts.” Prior to the formal lawsuit (which was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday), Flores had previously filed a complaint with the Department of Children and Family Services that accused Spears of physically abusing her two young sons in the bodyguard’s presence, including one incident where she supposedly struck one of them with a belt. Kevin Federline, Spears’ ex-husband and father to both Sean Preston and Jayden James, also denied the child abuse accusations put forth by Flores. Through his attorney, Federline declared the allegations “baseless,” according to The Associated Press. Spears — who at one point lost custody of her two kids — now shares joint custody with Federline. Flores, who claims Spears would often expose herself to him and engage in sexual acts while in his presence, is seeking damages for the alleged sexual harassment. Bodyguard Group is on Team Oksana Grigorieva

The majority of THG poll respondents stand with Mel Gibson in his ongoing legal and custody battles with his controversial ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. We’re guessing her bodyguards don’t read THG. Their loss. In any case, the men who are currently protecting her – all U.S. military veterans – are coming to her defense and making it clear they’re on Team Oksana. If you missed it, Oksana alleges he abused her and their eight-month-old daughter, Lucia, in January. Authorities are investigating but haven’t charged Mel. Many are skeptical, but bodyguards believe her. The Bodyguard Group, a referral service for veterans, just posted the following statement on its site: “The Bodyguard Group has reviewed both versions of events and ALL of our members agree that ONLY Oksana is being 100% honest … We ask that everyone support Oksana and take a stand against all men who abuse women and children.” While it’s unusual for bodyguards who don’t normally take sides to be so vocal, the post adds, “We could not keep silent after the abuse Oksana suffered.” It is unclear if any bodyguards are the witnesses her attorneys claim saw Mel hit Oksana , but they seem fairly certain the actor was abusive in some way. Well? Changed your mind?

Lady Gaga and Luc Carl: Playing it Cool

Trolling for dirt on Luc Carl? Don’t expect much from his work. The New York bartender and ex-boyfriend of Lady Gaga, who is reportedly back together with the singer now, works at St. Jerome’s in the East Village. Recently Lady Gaga has been hanging around the bar again, fueling speculation that she and Luc Carl are back together. If so, they keep it very quiet. His co-workers protect his cover, too. Customers have spotted a sign near the telephone that instructs employees to tell callers, “I don’t know Luc.” Luc Carl’s pseudo-celebrity status hasn’t stopped Gaga from stopping by. She visited him on Saturday night, one day after she rocked the Today show . Sounds like Luc Carl is Gaga for this lovely Lady again. Sipping red wine at the bar with her bodyguard, “She was playing it really cool,” a witness says. “You would not have even known they were together.” According to Gagapedia, Luc Carl is a club promoter, musician, DJ, author, bartender, personal trainer, and semi-pro bowler from Omaha, Nebraska. It’s unclear when they got back together, but he currently lives in New York City, and works at two bars, St. Jerome’s, and Welcome To The Johnsons. He dated Lady Gaga for three years, and is the source of inspiration for many songs she wrote during that time – including her newest, “You and I.” Here’s hoping it works out!

Guru’s Best: The Top 10 Essential Gang Starr Tracks

MTV News’ hip-hop team shares their faves, plus five of Guru’s Jazzmatazz greats. By Sway Calloway, Rahman Dukes, Shaheem Reid, Steven Roberts and Jayson Rodriguez Gangstarr Photo: Capitol No one questioned Guru’s claim that he was “one of the best yet.” The Boston native had one of the most distinctive voices in hip-hop history. You didn’t even need a whole bar to know that Gifted Universal Rhymes Unlimited was on the mic. Backed by beats from the almighty DJ Premier, Guru supplied glorious vocals on battle raps, intricate life stories and candid street commentary. The 43-year-old MC passed away on Monday due to complications from cancer. And despite the fact that the Gang Starr duo were estranged for the last several years, their legacy is concrete — one of the richest in hip-hop history. Here at MTV News, the hip-hop team listed our choices for 10 essential Gang Starr songs. 1. “Dwyck,” featuring Nice and Smooth : The party record from 1994’s Hard to Earn is timeless. We love the simplistic rhymes from the trio, like, “Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is,” and Primo’s beat is a signature hip-hop treats. 2. “Take It Personal” : The phone rings on the beat; the song (from 1992’s Daily Operation ) is off the hook. With imposing precision, Guru pulls the curtain back and sees a backstabber for the scoundrel he is. “I can see through you, ’cause I’m the Guru/ What you gonna do when I start to step to you.” 3. “Mass Appeal” : No crossover. Gang Starr always kept artistic integrity, and on this Hard to Earn track, Guru admonishes the posers with lines like, “You’re a son like Elroy/ And you’d be happy as hell to get a record deal/ Maybe your soul you sell for the mass appeal.” 4. “Just to Get a Rep” : “Stick up kids just out to tax.” In this song on 1991’s Step in the Arena, Guru’s words take us to the frontlines, where misguided youths think that the way of the gun is the road to respect. 5. “Suckas Need Bodyguard” : The aggression is turned up as Guru puts the heat on chumps in this Hard to Earn song. “My rhymes are a cargo, and yours are just a quarter ounce.” The chorus pretty much gets the group’s point across: “Fake MCs, they always act hard, but won’t walk the streets without their bodyguards.” 6. “Ex-Girl to the Next Girl” : One of Guru’s greatest gifts on the mic was his clarity in thought and articulation. His stories would unfold almost right in front of your eyes. Here, he shows some vulnerability as he navigates the relationship waters but finds triumph in the end. The track (from Daily Operation ) gave an early indication of where he would later go with his heralded Jazzmatazz series. 7. “Royalty,” featuring K-Ci and JoJo: After a four-year break between albums, the two underground Kings returned with two-thirds of the legendary R&B group Jodeci for this inspirational track (on 1998’s Moment of Truth ) about striving for greatness. Guru even shouts out our very own Sway and his partner King Tech. 8. “Words I Manifest” : Vintage, early Gang Starr. The duo came out of the gate promoting knowledge of self and establishing their roles in hip-hop. “I got tenacity, because I have to be/ The brother who must live and give with much insight/ Foresight to ignite, excite and delight.” 9. “You Know My Steez” : Gang Starr talk about their lauded musical modus operandi, an authentic representation of the essence of hip-hop. 10. “The ? Remainz” : “This is a battle rhyme in case you haven’t noticed/ You get replaced, you get demoted.” The belligerence is beautiful in this 1994 track, as Guru and Primo once again answer the bell and silence any questions as to whether they’ve earned the title of hip-hop Ownerz. Five Essential Records From the Jazzmatazz Series : “Loungin’ ” with Donald Byrd “Trust Me” with N’Dea Davenport “Keep Ur Worries” with Angie Stone “Le Bien, le Mal” with MC Solaar “Plenty,” featuring Erykah Badu What are your favorite Gang Starr and Guru songs? The Verdict: Mass Effect 2: Kasumi – Stolen Memory PDLC

I’m not sure how I feel about EA and Bioware’s new DLC strategy these days. At first, I loved the idea of incremental content which added an hour here, an hour there to games that I already enjoy but now that I’ve played it that way, I’m not sure it’s working. To be fair, Kasumi – Stolen Memory , the first of Mass Effect 2 ’s premium DLC, is a fine addition to the ME2 universe. Ringing in at about $7, Stolen Memory introduces a new character, Kasumi Goto, a master thief with the ability to cloak herself to stealthily dispatch bad guys. While Kasumi can simply become a member of your crew, it’s her loyalty mission that adds new content to the game with a heist mission that plays out as one part covert op spy thriller, one part action shooter. As a change of pace from other Mass Effect 2 missions, the idea of gathering DNA to thwart a security vault’s sensor is clever, but in execution, it boils down to running around clicking on hotspots or brief dialog trees to elicit voice password samples. Great on paper, kind of lousy in-game. To be clear, I’m totally onboard for a less run-and-gun experience in these types of games, which is why I’m hopeful that Alpha Protocol comes together; I just didn’t feel like this aspect of the PDLC really met its potential. If it allowed for more strategy or multiple options in how to solve a problem, I’d have been more of a fan but everything seemed a little too straight-forward. Of course, not all goes to plan and eventually the mission devolves into a firefight, which really showcases Kasumi’s abilities. Her Shadow Strike cloaking ability is a great way to thin out soldiers, and combined with my Dominate skill, I was able to walk all over the Eclipse soldiers and mechs to the end scenario of the mission. It’s just Kasumi and yourself, so you may want to make sure you have the right equipment to take on shielded or barrier-infused foes. I won’t spoil what comes later, but the action was satisfying all the way through and ends on a nice note.

Free Tony Dovolani From Kate Gosselin!

We have two words for you, Dancing with the Stars fans. Free Tony. Kate Gosselin is so standoffish on the show, she has staff members contact her through her bodyguard and is driving partner Tony Dovolani up the wall. “When the show needs to contact Kate, they go through Steve,” a production source says, referring to none other than her rumored fling Steve Neild. “She acts like a major celebrity. It’s a joke with the cast.” Having also come under attack for being an absentee mom this week, the stress may be getting to Kate Gosselin, who in turn “tortures” poor Dovolani. OUT OF CONTROL MONSTER TRAIN WRECK : That’s Kate for you . Gosselin, who’s been called a ” super bitch from hell ” but survived another week on Dancing with the Stars , hasn’t bothered getting to know any other contestants. “When she is getting her hair done, she is on her BlackBerry the whole time… [she] is not making herself likable,” an insider says of the infamous Type-A mom. “If she tagged along, they wouldn’t ask her to leave, but they wouldn’t be overjoyed either. She’s not much fun,” another source adds. “She’s in full diva mode.” Bearing the brunt of Kate’s wrath? Tony Dovolani, the pro dancer unfortunately tasked with being her partner. He’s already threatened to walk off the show once. If only we could save him from the banshee. Unfortunately, people keep voting for Kate to stay on. It’s like ABC is rigging the votes just to eff with the poor guy. It stops now. Do not vote for Kate next week. Free Tony! Support the cause, people. Support the cause .

Is Angelina Jolie Really That Bad?

That Angelina Jolie bodyguard story from yesterday – in which the dude accuses her of being a heartless psycho bitch – can’t possibly be true can it? If you missed it, In Touch Weekly allegedly got one of Brad and Angie’s former employees to spill the dirty beans about his, um, domineering ex-boss. Brangelina and other stars presumably have their employees sign confidentiality agreements, which if he broke, he’d be in for one hell of a lawsuit here. That said, are the things he says so far-fetched? “Bill the bodyguard,” as he’s referred to, dishes that Jolie has a bit of a different persona between what the public sees and what goes on behind closed doors. Who is the real Angelina Jolie exactly? Seeing as she’s a woman who complains about a lack of privacy, then flaunts PDAs with Brad and kids to silence the press, that’s not a huge stretch. He also alleges that her favorite method of punishment of the silent treatment, that she is unmoved by emotions and can switch moods in an instant. The moniker ” Arctic Angie ” and her legendary mood swings didn’t come out of nowhere, so there may be at least partial truth to that statement, too. She and Brad not boning anymore, and sleeping in different rooms? Believable. Laughing when her children cry, though? That may be a little much. In short, who’s to say what’s true and what isn’t when it comes to Brangelina. Something may be amiss, but as THG sees it only two things are certain: The mind games Ang plays haven’t driven Brad back to Jen … yet Bill the Bodyguard is about to feel the wrath of the Ice Queen
