Whitney Houston’s Family To Star On Reality Show

‘The Houston Family Chronicles,’ which will feature Bobbi Kristina Brown and Cissy Houston, premieres on Lifetime later this year. By John Mitchell Whitney Houston and her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage A new reality series featuring the family of late pop superstar Whitney Houston will premiere on Lifetime later this year, the network announced in a statement Friday (May 11). Titled “The Houston Family Chronicles,” the show will feature Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, and mother Cissy Houston, though the focus will be on “The Bodyguard” superstar’s brother Gary Houston and sister-in-law and manager Pat Houston, as well as their daughter, Rayah. Houston’s cousin Dionne Warwick and Bobbie Kristina’s godmother, gospel legend CeCe Winans, will also appear in the series. According to Lifetime, the reality show will focus on Pat and Gary “as they take on their greatest challenge, supporting and guiding Bobbi Kristina as she faces the world alone, without the one person she relied on the most, her mother.” Whitney Houston died on February 11 of this year at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The L.A. County coroner ruled that accidental drowning was the official cause of Houston’s death, adding that cocaine use and heart disease were contributing factors. The report indicated traces of cocaine were found in Houston’s system at the time of death along with Xanax, Flexeril, marijuana and Benadryl, though officials said these substances played no role in her untimely passing. “The tragic loss of Whitney Houston left a void in the hearts of people all over the world, but certainly none more so than her beloved family,” Rob Sharenow, executive vice president of programming at Lifetime Networks, said in a statement. “In this series, the multi-generations of the Houston family will bravely reveal their lives as they bond together to heal, love, and grow.” Lifetime has ordered 10 hour-long episodes of “The Houston Family Chronicles” and will premiere the show at a yet-undetermined time later this year. According to Pat Houston, the show had been in the works well before Whitney’s death. “I have been working with Simmons-Shelley [production company] over the past few years developing a project suitable for myself and our family,” Pat Houston said. “The unexpected passing of Whitney certainly affects the direction of the show. However, it is my hope that others will be enlightened as they watch our family heal and move forward.” Will you watch “The Houston Family Chronicles”? Let us know in the comments below. Rihanna Twitpics: The Weirdest Batch Yet?

Rihanna has become infamous for her Twitpics and Instagram uploads in recent months, but her latest set is strange even by her high standards. If you thought she couldn’t top grinding with strippers or sitting on her bodyguard’s shoulders playing with white powder on his head , think again. Wednesday morning she uploaded this one. When someone asked where she’s been as “You been quiet all day”, Rihanna replied with this pic: Yup, her arm with an IV attached. No other comment or caption. It’s definitely her arm, too, because the elaborate nail painting job that she got before attending the Met Gala on Monday was still on display. Said manicure, for what it’s worth, meant she was late to the event, missing her slot on the red carpet and infuriating Vogue ‘s Anna Wintour. A few hours after posting the IV picture she uploaded a pic of herself by a plane with the caption, “My ride home NY days LA nights #itwuzreal.” This implies she’s not in hospital … or at least she’s not anymore. Not that this is her first IV Twitpic. In November she tweeted a similar picture after being hospitalized with severe exhaustion in Sweden . Is she exhausted again? It’s not unlikely. Girl goes hard.

Rihanna Had ‘Guts To Take Chances’ In Big-Screen Debut

‘There’s probably no more single important skill that you can ask for in an actress,’ ‘Battleship’ director Peter Berg tells MTV News. By Fallon Prinzivalli Rihanna in the “Battleship” poster Photo: Universal Pictures With the much-anticipated “Battleship” set to release May 18, some are still skeptical as to whether Rihanna can make a successful transition from music to film. But even in the beginning stages of the movie, director Peter Berg never doubted the pop singer’s talent. “I’m a big believer in musicians-turned-actor,” Berg told MTV News, proceeding to list many of the musicians who went on to make it on the big screen. “You could do a great MTV special about all the musicians that have acted,” he continued. “It starts for me with Frank Sinatra, who won an Oscar for a movie called ‘From Here to Eternity.’ Mick Jagger was in a film called ‘Performance.’ David Bowie was in ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth.’ Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand. Did you see a film called ‘Precious’? Mariah Carey — remember how awesome she was in that film? Terrific. Lenny Kravitz. The late Whitney Houston was in a film called ‘The Bodyguard.’ ” Houston, however, played a musician in “The Bodyguard,” which was a role very familiar to her. If the “Talk That Talk” singer were to depict the beloved singer and actress in a Whitney Houston biopic — as she told the U.K. Press Association she “would give her entire life to do” — she would no doubt have more experience to draw on than someone who was just an actress. But Rihanna’s role of FBI agent Raikes in “Battleship” is unfamiliar territory. The thought never worried Berg. “Well, look at Mariah Carey in ‘Precious.’ I mean, my God, you would never have thought that was Mariah Carey,” he said. Berg says that what helps musicians as they cross over into acting is that they already have many of the same skills actors possess. “They’re very artistic. They’re expressive. They’re honest. They’re willing to take chances,” the director explained. “And I knew from the second I saw Rihanna in her videos that that girl had real charisma. She came in and had a long meeting with me. We just played around, and she really didn’t even know what was going on, but what was apparent is that she really has the guts to take chances. There’s probably no more single important skill than that, that you can ask for in an actress.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Whitney Houston Offered Lil’ Kim Her Bodyguard

On ‘RapFix Live,’ Kim recalls when late pop diva offered her protection from a stalker: ‘She was so sweet about it.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil’ Kim Photo: Uptin Saiidi / MTV News Lil’ Kim has stories for days. On Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” the Queen Bee buzzed about her career, the things she’s done and the people she’s met. When a fan asked about Whitney Houston , a bright smile came upon Kim’s face and the memories came flooding. “Oh my goodness, I absolutely adored and loved Whitney Houston,” Kim gushed about the late icon. Turns out, at one time, Kim and Houston shared something in common — crazed stalkers. Once Houston learned of an obsessed fan who would leave creepy gifts at Kim’s doorstep, “The Bodyguard” actress offered her own personal bodyguard to help protect the female rapper. “Whitney Houston called me, and she was like, ‘Kim, I will send my guy, because remember when that stalker was in my house?’ ” Kim said, reenacting the conversation with her best Whitney impression. “She was so sweet about it,” Kim remembered. That wasn’t the only time the Hardcore MC and the pop diva bonded. Kim also recalled a time that she ended up on the same flight with Houston and her then-husband Bobby Brown. Surprised to see the femcee, Brown suggested Houston sit next to Kim so they could have a bit of girl talk. Kim excitedly agreed, but Whitney wasn’t in the mood for much conversation — or so she said: “She was like, ‘Girl, I’m not much of a talker,’ ” Kim recalled. “In my mind, I’m like, ‘This is Whitney. I don’t care, she can still sit there. I’ll just look at her.’ ” Kim’s dog Diamond was the icebreaker, however, and after Houston sat the pooch on her lap, she began to open up. Seems like Whitney was in the mood for some girl talk after all. “By the time we got in the air and they were getting ready to serve dinner, she had talked me to sleep,” Kim said, laughing. “She was so down to earth, so beautiful.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ Welcomes Back Lil’ Kim Related Photos Whitney Houston: A Life In Photos Related Artists Whitney Houston

Fun. debut at #3, while Tyga lands at #4 with Careless World. By Gil Kaufman Adele’s 21 Photo: Columbia Records Surely someone is going to come along to knock Adele off her perch. But in the meantime, the Grammy-winning singer simply cannot be beat, as her 21 will notch its 22nd non-consecutive week at #1 next week thanks to sales of nearly 297,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. And that’s with sales dropping almost 60 percent from her post-Grammy high . More than a year into her incredible run, Adele has sold almost 7.7 million copies of her second album in the U.S. Also holding strong was the Whitney Houston greatest-hits collection, which lost just 1 percent of its sales from the previous week, staying in the #2 position on sales of 174,000 in the second full chart week since the singer’s death . It was joined in the top 10 by the soundtrack to “The Bodyguard,” (#6, 47,000, up 176 percent) and her self-titled debut (#9, 30,000, up 72 percent). Among the debuts in the top 10 are: Fun. , Some Nights (#3, 70,000); Tyga , Careless World: Rise of the Last King (#4, 61,000); and Chiddy Bang , Breakfast (#8, 31,000). The rest of the top 10: Now That’s What I Call Music! 41 (#5, 54,000); Adele’s debut, 19 (#7, 39,000); and the 2012 Grammy Nominees compilation (#10, 29,000). Just outside the top tier, buzz duo Sleigh Bells rolled into a #12 debut with their second album, Reign of Terror and Grimes hit #98 with Visions (5,000). Over on the iTunes singles chart, Fun.’s hookup with Janelle Monae , “We Are Young,” was at #1, followed by Kelly Clarkson ‘s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” The Wanted with “Glad You Came,” Katy Perry ‘s “Part of Me” and B.o.B ‘s “So Good.” The list was rounded out by Adele at #6 with “Set Fire to the Rain,” Nicki Minaj just behind with “Starships,” then Gotye with “Somebody That I Used to Know,” Chris Brown with “Turn Up the Music” and Carrie Underwood ‘s “Good Girl.” Adele easily kept the #1 spot on the iTunes album chart, followed by Tyga, Fun., Chiddy Bang, Houston, Sleigh Bells, Gotye’s Making Mirrors, Adele’s 19, Drake ‘s Take Care and the Beatles ‘ 1. Adele should be safe for another week as she pursues the magic 24-weeks-at-#1 mark, though the new album from Bruce Springsteen could provide a challenge. Otherwise, the fresh faces include Sean Paul , Estelle and Kid Cudi ‘s troubled WZRD project . Related Artists Adele fun. Tyga

Sacha Baron Cohen Oscar Stunt: Denied by The Academy

Sacha Baron Cohen not been banned from The Academy Awards. Not yet at least. But the actor is in hot water with the organization because he wants to walk the red carpet dressed as the main character from The Dictator , a Middle Eastern leader named General Aladeen. The Academy is less than enthused over this plan. “We would hope that every studio knows that this is a bad idea,” a spokesperson told Deadline . “The red carpet is not about stunting.” The Dictator Trailer Still, Cohen – who stars in Hugo , a Best Picture nominee – is still invited to the ceremony… for now. An insider does conform however, that his tickets will be rescinded if he goes through with the stunt. What do you think? Should the Oscars remain pure, traditional and promotion-free? Or is still stale, ratings-declining ceremony in need of someone like Cohen to spice the show up?
