POTUS Speaks His Piece To SOPA/PIPA Supporters: “Eff That Isht!!!”

Victory…kinda… The growing anti-SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) support that has swept through the gaming and Internet community found a very big ally today. With websites like Reddit and Wikipedia and gaming organizations like Major League Gaming prepared for a blackout on January 18th – the same day that the House Judiciary Committee hearing on HR 3261was scheduled in Washington, DC – President Barack Obama has stepped in and said he would not support the bill. SOPA has been delayed, for now. The House has agreed to revisit the issue next month, but they now know the White House will veto any bill that’s not more narrowly focused. Much to the chagrin of Hollywood, the Entertainment Software Association (which has been a backer of the bill from early on), and Internet domain company GoDaddy.com (which lost many accounts as a result of its support for the bill); SOPA has been shelved. The Motion Picture Association of America, one of the bill’s largest sponsors, is expected to regroup. The White House released an official statement regarding the controversial matter, that reads in part: “Any provision covering Internet intermediaries such as online advertising networks, payment processors, or search engines must be transparent and designed to prevent overly broad private rights of action that could encourage unjustified litigation that could discourage startup businesses and innovative firms from growing,” said The White House. “We expect and encourage all private parties, including both content creators and Internet platform providers working together, to adopt voluntary measures and best practices to reduce online piracy.” SOPA is severely wounded, but far from dead. Just like piracy itself, this debate isn’t over. Expect more bills to move forward, although the wording in future legislation is expected to be more narrowly focused in an attempt to appease the current administration. But given the current economic climate and the upcoming Presidential election, there could be a different administration entering The White House soon, changing the landscape for these types of bills. Bottom line is, to protect these here internets we need to make sure we all VOTE! You already know what types of folks (Republicans) will be goin’ hard to make sure that some form of this bill passes and further restricts the free information sharing that we all use and depend on every single day. Good Riddance: Jon Huntsman To Drop Out Of GOP Presidential Race To Support Fellow Mormon Mitt Romney

Mormons unite: Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is expected to withdraw his bid for the Republican presidential nomination and throw his support to Mitt Romney, Fox News learned Sunday. Huntsman is set to announce his withdrawal from the race Monday at 11:00 a.m. ET at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in South Carolina, at which time he will endorse his former rival. After several days of discussion with his family, friends and campaign advisers, the former Obama administration ambassador to China told aides he is ending his presidential campaign. Governor Huntsman was encouraged in New Hampshire, but does not want to stand in the way of the best candidate to beat Barack Obama and will endorse Romney, an aide for Huntsman told Fox News. South Carolina senior staffers for Huntsman say they are “stunned,” but partially relieved because they feel the state had been neglected by a lack of resources and attention. “(The) campaign never put serious resources … to promote his serious conservative record that would have beaten Obama,” Regional Southeast Political Director Adam Piper told Fox News. One down, four more to go. Source

Dirty Dog Karma??? John Edwards Has A Life-Threatening Condition!!!

We’re not tryna be mean, but… A federal judge disclosed Friday that former presidential candidate John Edwards has a life-threatening heart condition, a court source confirmed to CNN. Edwards had sought a delay in his criminal corruption trial, scheduled to begin this month. Attorneys and the federal judge met in a North Carolina courtroom Friday afternoon for a status hearing regarding the pending trial of Edwards, a former U.S. senator. Edwards appeared at Friday’s hearing. His lawyers had made the motion for a delay under seal, but some of its details were publicly revealed by the judge in the open hearing. The criminal trial has been delayed until at least March 26, according to the court source. Judge Catherine Eagles said she has been in contact with Edwards’ cardiologist, who recommended a postponement, saying Edwards is scheduled to undergo surgery next month. Edwards has to provide the court with a written medical update by February 28, according to court records. One legal expert, Marcellus McRae, a trial lawyer and former federal prosecutor, said he doubted that Edwards’ illness would influence a jury verdict. “Edwards’s illness may prompt the public, including potential jurors, to view him in a more sympathetic light. However, it is doubtful that this will have any impact on the outcome of his trial,” McRae said. “Given the nature of the charges, his physical condition is of no relevance and he will have in theory recovered by the time the case went to trial in March in any event.” Edwards’ attorneys asked in December to delay his criminal trial, saying he had an unspecified medical issue. Edwards is charged with six felony and misdemeanor counts related to donations to and payments from his failed 2008 presidential campaign. He is accused of conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws. He denies any wrongdoing. Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth, died of cancer in December 2010. The couple had separated that year, shortly after Edwards admitted that he had fathered a daughter with Rielle Hunter, who was hired to make documentary videos for his campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. We’re just saying…

Reality Check: 500,000 Haitian People Still Living In Tents On The Two Year Anniversary Of The January 12 Earthquake [PICS]

It doesn’t even seem like it’s been that long , does it? Sadly, Haitians have grown used to seeing earthquake rubble and the makeshift camps that sprang up after that fateful day in January 2010. The United Nations, Haitian officials and private aid agencies have said that Haiti has made strides in the two years since the quake. But few deny that recovery has been painfully slow. All you have to do is look at Leocal. And she might be considered one of the lucky ones. She has a “home,” however modest. The United Nations estimated the 7.0-magnitude earthquake affected nearly 3 million people and killed about 220,000. More than 1.5 million people were left homeless in a country that was already the poorest in the Western hemisphere and wracked by crisis. Consider that 70% of Haitians did not have stable jobs before the quake and there were only 5.9 doctors per 10,000 residents. Two years later, almost as many Haitians are still unemployed. Debris still clutters the capital and other places. About half the rubble, the equivalent of five football stadiums full, has been removed, according to the United Nations. About half a million people are still homeless. Many still live in tents in the shadows of the collapsed presidential palace, perhaps the most visible symbol of Haiti’s misery. “You can’t stay on the streets,” Leocal said. “If that’s what you have, you have to rebuild.” She is not alone in her frustration. Thousands of Haitians marched Wednesday through Port-au-Prince to the Parliament building to demand a reform of land laws so they can be freed to build homes, said Marjorie Bertrand Dumornay, coordinator of the grass-roots campaign funded by ActionAid Haiti. “The rebuilding process is mostly led by the foreigners,” she said. “There is no national plan. The Haitian state does not have the will.” Michel Martelly, the former pop star who was elected president last year partly because he presented a fresh face in Haitian politics, campaigned on a pledge to fix Haiti. But it took him months to even form a government and he recently said that motivating people to move in the nation’s “culture of immobilism” has been a challenge. Standing recently on a site where he said more than 600 families had been living in tents until just days ago, Martelly said the government was able to relocate them in housing. The project, he said, cost $9 million because damaged homes had to be either repaired or reconstructed. He acknowledged that many thousands are still waiting. “But it’s about sending the signal,” he told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “It’s not about having the magic stick and making the problem disappear in one day. If you plant a tree today, in order to enjoy the shadow, you have to wait five years. So changing Haiti is going to take time and healing the wounds is going to take time.” Here’s wising the Haitian people continued progress in their healing and rebuilding. Take a look at pictures taken in Haiti over the past on the flip.

Wendy Williams Talks “Michelle Obama Angry Black Woman” Controversy [Video]

From the moment Barack Obama started running for president, the media and some members of the public have tried to label Michelle Obama as an “angry black woman.” New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor claims in her new book, “The Obamas,” that the First Lady is a strong force and source of conflict in the West Wing of the White House, which the First Lady disputed in a recent interview with Gayle King on “CBS This Morning.” Find out what Wendy has to say about the age-old “angry black woman” stereotype.

Race Matters: Is New Orleans’ New Curfew In The French Quarter Really Meant To Keep Black Folks Away From The Tourists??

This is a tough one to gauge… From a distance, it seemed like common sense: an ordinance meant to keep children away from an open-air night-life zone with more than 350 places to buy booze, an abundance of strip joints and a 300-year-old reputation for iniquity. But last week, as the New Orleans City Council approved a strict curfew for youths 16 and younger in the French Quarter, it sparked an incendiary debate that laid bare some of the tensions over race and police priorities that the Louisiana city — which suffers from the nation’s highest per capita murder rate — is struggling to resolve as it navigates its post-Hurricane Katrina future. The ordinance, which was unanimously approved Thursday, revises a long-standing 11 p.m. curfew on Friday and Saturday nights to 8 p.m. for the French Quarter and part of the nearby Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. In the rest of the city, an 11 p.m. curfew remains on weekends, with an 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. curfew on weekdays, depending on the season. Councilwoman Kristen Gisleson Palmer, whose district includes the French Quarter, wrote the ordinance. The goal, she said, was to protect children from violent incidents like the headline-grabbing shootings last Halloween night, in which two people were killed and a dozen injured by gunfire on or around the packed Bourbon Street party strip. “If we can, in any way, protect children from that, I think it’s very reasonable,” Palmer said. But in a pair of emotional public meetings, a number of residents, most of them African Americans, criticized the idea. Some alleged that the lawmakers were trying to keep low-income blacks out of the sightlines of tourists. “There is this desire not to have these black males in the French Quarter,” said Tracie L. Washington, an attorney who heads the Louisiana Justice Institute, a nonprofit civil rights group. Palmer, who is white, dismissed the allegations. At the council meeting Thursday, critics said the curfew would result in racial profiling of young blacks. One man called it “the equivalent of a black code.” Another African American speaker said that instead of “sugar-coating” the issue, the council should “just tell us straight up — you don’t want us.” Some worried that police would harass black kids going to and from restaurant jobs, or when they were busking or tap-dancing for tips from tourists. Palmer, the councilwoman, said those kids would be left alone because the ordinance exempts, among others, people at work or headed to and from work. Many critics argued that the new curfew hours would seem more fair if they were enforced citywide. Palmer said her staff was working on a new ordinance to do just that. Ronal Serpas, the city’s police superintendent, said he had asked his officers to be more diligent about enforcing the existing citywide curfew since he took charge of the police department in May 2010. Some French Quarter residents have applauded the new curfew, but other New Orleanians wonder whether police, in enforcing the rules, will be distracted from more crucial duties. In many cases, youths breaking the curfew will be told to go home, but in some instances police might take them into custody. Do you think the curfew is racially motivated ? Source More On Bossip!
