Ben Carson Believes #BlackLivesMatters Is A Distraction Dividing America Good luck becoming POTUS with THIS kind of attitude… Via ThinkProgress Since the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Eric Garner in New York, Trayvon Martin in Florida, and countless others, “Black Lives Matter” has become a rallying call for a group of Americans unfairly targeted by police. Taking the message from protests to politicians, the movement has mounted pressure on 2016 presidential candidates to recognize the need for policies to address the disproportionate risk black Americans face of death in the hands of police. But not all candidates are receptive to that message. On Friday, Ben Carson, the only African American candidate from either party vying for the presidency, spoke at a conference organized by black conservative group Freedom’s Journal Institute (FJI) and titled “In Defense of Life: Why All Lives Matter.” Candidates on both the left and right have been criticized for their declaration of those words — “All Lives Matter” — diminishing the goals of the Black Lives Matter movement, which is asking people to recognize that black lives are devalued by our criminal justice system. Ben Carson, however, told ThinkProgress this week he sees the whole movement as divisive. “We need to talk about what the real issues are and not get caught up in silliness like this matters or that matters,” he said at a rally to defund Planned Parenthood Tuesday outside the U.S. Capitol, where protesters held signs reading “Unborn Lives Matter.” “Of course all lives matter. I don’t want to get into it, it’s so silly,” he continued, laughing to himself. “Black lives are part of all lives, right? When we’re talking about a culture of life, then we ought to be talking about a culture of life and not allow ourselves to get caught up in all the divisive rhetoric and terminology and political correctness. President Obama Commutes The Sentences Of 46 Nonviolent Prisoners Barack still got a couple tricks up his sleeve before he vacates 1600… Via CNN President Barack Obama commuted the prison sentences of 46 drug offenders, saying in a video posted online Monday that the men and women were not “hardened criminals” and their punishments didn’t match the crimes they committed. Obama said the move was part of his larger attempt to reform the criminal justice system, including reviewing sentencing laws and reducing punishments for non-violent crimes. With Monday’s announcement, Obama has commuted more sentences than any president since Lyndon B. Johnson. “I believe that at its heart, America is a nation of second chances, and I believe these folks deserve their second chance,” Obama said in the video. The move brings the number of Obama’s commutations to nearly 90. Most of those have been for federal prisoners incarcerated for drug offenses who were slapped with long sentences mandated under guidelines set during a drug-and-crime wave in the 1980s. Under current sentencing guidelines most of those prisoners would have already finished serving time. Of the 46 prisoners whose sentences were commuted on Monday, 13 were sentenced to prison for life. Most of those commuted sentences will now end in November, a several month transition period that officials said allowed for arrangements to be made in halfway homes and other facilities. After they’re released, the former prisoners will be supervised by probation officers and subject to conditions that were set during their original sentencing, which is some cases includes drug testing. Unarmed Jonathan Sanders Choked To Death By Mississippi Cop It never stops … Via HuffingtonPost The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case of an unarmed black man allegedly strangled to death by a white cop this week. Jonathan Sanders, a 39-year-old Stonewall resident, died last Wednesday evening following an altercation with an officer. Sanders — who owned horses and a buggy — was exercising his horses when he was approached by officer Kevin Harrington. Sanders’ attorney, Stewart Parrish, says that Harrington pulled Sanders off his horse and strangled him between 10:30 and 11 p.m. that night, WTOK reports. According to the Guardian, Parrish is making the allegations based on the accounts of family members who witnessed the incident. Charita Kennedy, Sanders’ girlfriend and mother to their 1-year-old son, told WTOK that Sanders was not violating any laws when Harrington confronted him. The Guardian and other outlets reported that Parrish said family members told him a flashlight was used to strangle Harrington, but Stonewall Police Chief Michael Street has denied those allegations. He told the Guardian that “there was no flashlight used to choke anybody — that’s false.” The Clarion-Ledger also reported that Parrish said earlier allegations that a flashlight was used were wrong. A cause of death won’t be officially determined until an autopsy is completed. Parrish told the Guardian that family witnesses could see Sanders struggling, saying, “Let me go, I can’t breathe” before his death. South Carolina Senate Casts First Vote to Remove Confederate Flag This is step one in the process to get South Carolina’s Confederate Flag down … The NY Times reports: The South Carolina Senate voted Monday to remove the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of the State House. The bipartisan proposal, which emerged after last month’s massacre at a historic black church in Charleston, was approved by a 37-to-3 vote in the Republican-controlled Senate. The Senate has one remaining ratification vote, now virtually assured of success. The debate will shift to the House of Representatives, which Republicans also dominate, where the timeline for — and tenor of — the debate remains less clear. The Senate’s vote on Monday marked a resounding shift in South Carolina, where less than three weeks ago removing the Confederate battle flag from a memorial near the State House was viewed as politically impossible. Guess we shouldn’t be surprised that hateful people want their children to be haters too. According to RawStory reports : The KKK wants its supporters to spend Labor Day weekend with them, according to its website — and they really want their children to come too. The notorious hate group will be holding its “National Congress” in Harrison, Arkansas. Attendees are expected to wear “casual business attire.” Scheduled “fun” will include ping pong, foosball, folk dancing and a “cross lighting. The light of Christ dispels the darkness.” The event organizers urged supporters not to leave young children behind, but bring them for some early indoctrination and fear mongering. “Your children are the target! Those that hate our heritage and faith have targeted America’s children,” the event page says. “Schools are indoctrination centers for homosexuals and race-mixers. Even our churches aren’t safe. Television is full of filth!” Accommodations for children, including a nursery for infants and toddlers, will be available. “If you have children still living at home we urge you not to neglect this important opportunity to help prepare your children. We will have a wonderful program to help entertain as well as teach them old time values of our forefathers,” the website urges. The group has made itself more visible since accused shooter and racist Dylann Roof gunned down nine unarmed African-American churchgoers in Charleston on June 17. The group praised Roof for the massacre, calling it a “victory.” They launched a recruitment campaign that week, leaving bags with candy and flyers in people’s yards in at least six states, including California, Kansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, and Georgia. This month the Klan will holding a training camp to “train future leaders who can return to their communities with the tools to become actively involved in this struggle for our racial redemption.” On July 18, they also plan to rally in South Carolina against the likely removal of the Confederate flag from the statehouse, Politico reports. Since the Charleston shooting, a string of black churches burned in the South and three were attributed to arson. This is so alarming. We hoped that times were getting better but it’s obvious that hatred is still on the rise. We shudder to think of one of our kids encountering kids who are being raised like this.

Barack Obama Says The N-Word In Interview About Racism In America President Barack Obama used the n-word to make a point about the reality of racism in America during an interview released Monday with comedian Marc Maron. Via CNN : Obama weighed in for the podcast “WTF with Marc Maron” on the national debate on race relations and gun control that has been reignited after the Charleston shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Obama said that progress on race relations has been made, citing his own experience as a young man who was born to a white mother and an African father. “I always tell young people, in particular, do not say that nothing has changed when it comes to race in America, unless you’ve lived through being a black man in the 1950s or ’60s or ’70s. It is incontrovertible that race relations have improved significantly during my lifetime and yours,” Obama said. But he added that “the legacy of slavery, Jim Crow, discrimination” exists in institutions and casts “a long shadow and that’s still part of our DNA that’s passed on.” Obama used the N-word and explained that the absence of racist language does not mean that racism doesn’t exist. “Racism, we are not cured of it. And it’s not just a matter of it not being polite to say nigger in public,” Obama said. “That’s not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It’s not just a matter of overt discrimination. Societies don’t, overnight, completely erase everything that happened 200 to 300 years prior.” Obama echoed comments he made Thursday and said that he’s had to make speeches about a “devastating loss” too often. “It’s not enough just to feel bad. There are actions that could be taken to make events like this less likely. One of those actions we could take would be to enhance some basic common sense gun safety laws,” Obama said. Obama lamented Congress’s lack of action on gun control and said “Unfortunately, the grip of the NRA on Congress is extremely strong. Rachel Dolezal Removed From Police Ombudsman Commission For Misconduct Too-da-loo ! Via NYPost The Spokane City Council has voted to remove Rachel Dolezal, the former Spokane NAACP president, from the city’s volunteer police ombudsman commission. The 6-0 vote came Thursday afternoon, KREM-TV reported. On Wednesday, Mayor David Condon and Spokane Council President Ben Stuckart called for Dolezal and two others to step down from the five-member commission after an independent investigation found the three commissioners acted improperly and violated government rules. The evidence and interviews confirmed workplace harassment allegations and “a pattern of misconduct” by Dolezal, the chairwoman, and two other commissioners, the report said. The council accepted the resignation of one of those commissioners and voted to give the other more time to respond. Dolezal, 37, resigned as head of the NAACP’s Spokane chapter this week after her parents said she was a white woman pretending to be black. In May, the city hired lawyers to investigate whistleblower complaints filed by an unidentified city employee who staffed the police commission. The report said Dolezal abused her authority by trying to supervise the Office of Police Ombudsman personnel and she exhibited bias against law enforcement, despite rules requiring fairness and impartiality. Dolezal’s duties as commissioner and as NAACP president were in conflict because she actively engaged in protests of officer-involved shootings, the report also said. Bye, bye, beyotch! *waves*
