Pottermore: Our Top-Five Wish List For J.K. Rowling’s New Site

‘Harry Potter’ author’s site is still cloaked in mystery, but there are a few things we’d like to see on her Web creation. By Kara Warner J.K. Rowling Photo: Daniel Barry/Getty Images There’s a lot of “Harry Potter”-related excitement going around these days, what with the release of the eighth and final film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” in just a few weeks, and our own Harry Potter World Cup heating up. And on Thursday morning (June 23) in London, “Potter” creator J.K. Rowling made an official announcement about the mysterious “Pottermore” website she introduced last week. The site will deliver a free, online reading experience including, according to a press release, “extensive new material about the characters, places and objects in the much-loved stories” and a digital capability in which “the storyline will be brought to life with sumptuous newly commissioned illustrations and interactive ‘Moments’ through which you can navigate.” “[It’s] a way I can be creative in a medium that didn’t exist when I started the books back in 1990,” Rowling told reporters during the press conference. That’s exciting stuff for “Potter” fans, considering the books have long since been completed and the final film hits theaters this summer. But at this point, with no Muggle having yet explored the site, we don’t know exactly what Pottermore will offer. Here are five things we hope we can see and do while playing in Rowling’s latest fantastical creation — now or in the future. Open Class/Character Development System No matter your house, heritage or O.W.L. scores, with the appropriate amount of training or playing time, you too can become an esteemed member of the wizarding community. No matter how basic or inexperienced you are when you begin exploring “Pottermore,” there should be opportunities for advancement and/or shifting skill sets. If you want to be an animagus, an auror, a healer, or even a professional Quidditch player, you need only put in the time. Quidditch Speaking of professional Quidditch players, there ought to be a recreational area in “Pottermore” where characters learn, play and eventually compete against one another at the hugely popular game. Instead of pitting competitors and teams against one another based solely on their houses, it would be great for players to be able to assemble themselves into teams. Virtual Place to Unwind, Be Entertained One of the main reasons Rowling’s masterworks have so many millions of fans, is because she’s created a world so magical and alluring, that we all dream of apparating into the Three Broomsticks for a butterbeer or taking a walk through Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. It would be great if Pottermore featured a competition-free area for socializing in and around virtual versions of Rowling’s most beloved fictional shops and assorted hotspots. Annual “Pottermore” Gatherings Although Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter is currently a perfect place to mix and mingle with fellow Potterphiles, we would love an annual event in the vein of GenCon or Comic-Con, where fans from all over the world meet to share in everything Harry Potter. In addition to pointed panel discussions on a variety of subjects, why not also host a few live action duels in the spirit of the tri-wizard tournament? Maybe an attempt at a grounded game of Quidditch or two? Special Guest Stars And/Or Participants It’s nearly impossible to assemble the entire “Harry Potter” film casts for “Pottermore” participation, but perhaps before they all move on from their Potter associations the actors can record special interactive greetings and messages, to be carefully placed throughout “Pottermore”? Maybe Daniel Radcliffe and company can pre-record video messages of encouragement for players? Alan Rickman could instruct a brief beginner-level Defense Against the Dark Arts Class? We’ll even settle for video clips from the movies popping up every now and again. Also, if Rowling is taking the time to make this special announcement, we’re hoping she’s going to stay involved enough that she’ll consider recording some messages as well. So what did we miss? What do you want from Pottermore? Tell us in the comments! Rise Against’s ‘Make It Stop’ Tackles Bullying, Suicide

Tim McIlrath’s band teams with ‘It Gets Better’ campaign for new video. By James Montgomery Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath Photo: Getty Images For more than a decade now, Tim McIlrath has been fighting the good fight. And during that time, he’s watched his band, Rise Against , rise from scrappy VFW Hall stalwarts to genuine rock-radio mainstays. But somewhere along the way, he began to notice RA’s agit-punk, certifiably progressive politics were getting lost in the mix. And needless to say, this bothered him. “Rise Against is a band that, we’ve played punk-rock dives and basements, that’s where we started, and at some point, we were adopted by a much-larger rock scene,” he told MTV News. “And when we were introduced to that rock scene, I found there were people that were unsure about who we are or where we stood on things … I found a lot of fans who were unsure about how we felt about if our fans were gay, and that broke my heart, to think that any one of our fans might even question for a second where we stand on that.” So, with those questions weighing on his mind, McIlrath headed into the studio with his band to begin work on what would become Rise Against’s sixth studio album, Endgame. It was during that process that the suicide of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi began making national news, bringing to light the rather-troubling issue of bullying and the plight of gay teenagers in the U.S. As he had done throughout Rise Against’s career, McIlrath knew he had to speak up — especially since none of his radio-clogging contemporaries seemed willing to do so. “When the month of September rolled around, and the wave of gay-teen suicides happened, I realized there needed to be a song about this, and also because the rock scene in general kind of fails to comment about this stuff — it sort of doesn’t comment about this stuff; it largely ignores this kind of thing,” he said. “And rock being a male-dominated, testosterone-driven place that I’ve been in the eye of the hurricane now for several years, I realized that it can be a place that can perpetuate homophobic behavior unless it’s addressed by bands like us.” McIlrath wrote “Make It Stop (September’s Children),” a song that deals explicitly with the issues of bullying, homophobia and suicides within the LGBT community. His message is one of hope: Yes, life does improve once the years of high school hell recede into memory; you’ve just got to find the strength not to give up. “The message is: It can get better, it does get better, give it a chance to get better, don’t end your life prematurely,” he said. “And don’t give credence to all these bullies that would give you all this crap and try to make your adolescence something that’s hard to deal with.” In the new video for the song, Rise Against team up with Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” campaign to help provide hope to those in need. The clip — shot in McIlrath’s former stomping grounds, Rolling Meadows High School in Illinois — follows three teens as they are pushed to the brink by their cruel classmates, and it’s only when they find themselves at the (very literal) end of their ropes, do they realize that they have much to live for, and they resolve to press on. Although McIlrath will be the first to admit that it’s just one song and one video, he said that if “Make It Stop” can even inspire even one teen from taking his or her life — regardless of sexual orientation — then he’ll consider it a success. And by speaking out, he hopes he’ll inspire others to follow suit. “I think that bullying is something that’s existed for a long time, obviously, and will, in a lot of ways, always exist, but I think it’s important now to bring this issue to light and to talk about it because there are certain dots we can connect, as Americans, to look at what is producing the bullying that is happening today,” he said. “We live in a country that has legislation that still treats the gay community as second-class citizens. That’s going to trickle down to our high school communities, it’s going to trickle down to our kids … and as long as we have these types of laws on the books, as long as we have TV networks masquerading as news stations that are perpetuating really violent and anti-gay rhetoric, that’s going to trickle down. “There are very real solutions to this, I believe. It isn’t just this intangible, ‘Oh, there’s always been bullies, there always will be bullies’ — it’s more than that, and it’s coming to a head now,” he continued. “And a lot of the suicides of September 2010 are the product of a culture and a media that we can really address, that we can really do something [about] and provide solutions for.” Share your opinion on “Make It Stop (September’s Children)” in the comments below!

Hip-Hop Dad Fights Fatherhood Stereotypes With New Book

The Urban Daily sports blogger Jamiyl Samuels aims to show Black fathers in a positive light with his upcoming book. “Pass The Torch: How A Young Black Father Challenges the ‘Deadbeat Dad’ Stereotype” tackles the hot-button issue of fatherhood in the Black community and the affect the lack of a father figure has on young Black males. Disturbed by the negative and stereotypical portrayal of young Black fathers in the media, Samuels speaks from his own personal experiences growing up without a father and draws a parallel to the equally criticized world of Hip Hop whose artists mostly came from broken homes, but rose from their rough upbringing to break the cycle of abandonment with their own children.  “Pass The Torch” praises Black fathers who do right by their children and offers a fresh perspective on a controversial issue. “Pass The Torch” will be released through Samuels’ own  W.R.E.a.C Havoc Publishing imprint via Createspace.com and Amazon.com in the near future. ‘Mortal Instruments’ Author Cassandra Clare Reacts To Jamie Campbell Bower Casting

Jamie Campbell Bower Photo: Tony Barson/ Getty Images “Mortal Instruments” actress Lily Collins has finally met her magical match in “Camelot” star Jamie Campbell Bower . Deadline Hollywood broke the news that Bower has been cast as demon-slaying Shadowhunter Jace Wayland in the big-screen adaptation of the first “Mortal Instruments” novel, “City of Bones.” Fans immediately took to Twitter to voice their reactions, with many concerned that the 22-year-old “Breaking Dawn” actor just didn’t look the way they imagined the character — described as a well-built, angelic-faced warrior. Yet, for Cassandra Clare, who’s penned four novels in the supernatural “Mortal Instruments” series, Bower couldn’t have been a better fit for the part. “His acting of the role is perfectly spot on,” she told MTV News of the audition footage producers sent her. In fact, Clare was so moved by the performance that she broke into tears. “I literally started crying because that was my Jace and Clary on the screen,” she said. Clare understands this sort of rabid (and often contentious) fan fervor, which has become par for the course for any YA novel getting the big-screen treatment. “I think this is sort of inevitable,” she said. “This is what happened with ‘The Hunger Games’ casting. This is what happened with ‘Twilight’ casting. I’m old enough to remember this is what happened with the ‘Harry Potter’ casting. The reaction is always worried because people feel very passionately about the books, and they just don’t want to see something that is going to mess it up for them.” And just as the naysaying died down after Jennifer Lawrence debuted her Katniss makeover for “Hunger Games” on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, Clare has a hunch that unconvinced fans will soon see things as she does. “I think in the same way that Jennifer Lawrence has transformed herself into Katniss, I think he will have no problem transforming himself into Jace,” she said. “One of the things about being an actor is that you’re a chameleon and you transform yourself. And actors have done amazing jobs transforming themselves in the past, and Jamie is really enthusiastic about the role.” Read our entire interview with “Mortal Instruments” author Cassandra Clare . Brittany Snow Recalls Smelly Tutor On ‘When I Was 17’

The ‘Harry’s Law’ star remembers a malodorous encounter she had with a private teacher while working on the TV series ‘American Dreams.’ By MTV News staff Brittany Snow on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News Brittany Snow says that at age 17 she was “very shy and pretty dorky,” but she also happened to be the star of the show “American Dreams.” That success was accompanied by on-set tutoring for the then-teenage actress. And, as Snow reveals on this week’s episode of “When I Was 17,” which premieres on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT, some lessons learned while getting schooled on the set of a TV series can differ greatly from those imparted in a traditional classroom. “When I was 17, I was on a show called ‘American Dreams.’ I also had to finish high school so I was doing three or four takes of a scene [then] rushing to the tutoring trailer,” the current star of “Harry’s Law” explains during the newest installment of the MTV series, which also features TV personality La La Vazquez and “Pretty Little Liars” actress Ashley Benson. “I figured out a way to do the least amount of work as possible,” she recalls, before joking, “Which I guess is not good to say to the MTV audience. My friend Vanessa [Lengies], who I worked with, we were being tutored by this one lady who will remain nameless. We always noticed that there was this smell in the trailer.” Adds Lengies, “It got so bad you couldn’t even be in the room for more than five minutes. We had to find the source of this awful, wretched smell.” So, the two ladies began to investigate the cause of the odor. “About a week later, we found the tutor was keeping all this food in the storage cabinet with our books,” Snow remembers. And, as it turns out, it was the smelliest kind of food imaginable. “We opened the cabinet and both of us were like, ‘Oh my God,’ ” Lengies says. “There were old eggs, there was an onion in there.” Snow explains that they then decided to take matters into their own hands. “Just, like, that does not need to be incorporated with our curriculum. Vanessa and I decided to disinfect the entire trailer,” the actress says. “I have no idea why she was keeping eggs in a cabinet, but to each their own.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Brittany Snow, La La Vazquez and Ashley Benson — airs on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. Death Cab For Cutie Take You Behind The Scenes Of ‘You Are A Tourist’ Video

Bandmembers say they weren’t nervous about live broadcast of video shoot. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard Photo: MTV News As you are probably aware by now, on Tuesday night, Death Cab for Cutie managed to pull off their “You Are a Tourist” video — which was shot live, in one continuous take, and broadcast to the entire world via the Internet — without incident. Although the final product looked effortless, it only came together after a full day of rehearsals in Los Angeles, where Death Cab for Cutie worked (and reworked) the “Tourist” choreography with director Tim Nackashi and a bevy of background dancers. Now that “Tourist” is in the books — and disaster-free — we decided it was time to have DCFC take us through the process of making the clip, live, without a net. “The idea actually came to us from a friend of ours that’s been a creative collaborator with us over a number of projects over the years, named Aaron Stewart-Ahn,” Death Cab bassist Nick Harmer said. “He basically had a concept for the video and passed it to us, and we were able to go out into the world and find Tim Nackashi to direct and come up with a great treatment. … Really, it’s been a lot of minds all working on the same puzzle, and those two, between Tim and Aaron, deserve all the credit.” “Honestly,” frontman Ben Gibbard laughed, “we’re just the beneficiaries of all these great ideas.” As Gibbard explained, the trick to pulling off “Tourist” had a lot to do with the choreography — more specifically, striking a balance between too much and too little of it. “The balance here is to try to have there be a legitimate amount of choreography involved, but not so much that if one thing goes wrong, the whole thing topples like a house of cards,” he said. “There are some very kind of tight moves throughout the video, but nothing that, you know, if I’m not standing here at this one point, the Rube Goldberg [machine] falls apart and you’re standing there for the next three minutes looking like a moron.” To that point, DCFC said that though they’d be shooting a video live for the entire world to see, they weren’t nervous in the slightest. Because really, all the hard work was left to Nackashi and Stewart-Ahn. All the guys in the band had to do was hit their marks and everything would, in theory, be OK. As it turns out, it was. “I feel kind of fine. I mean, we’ve done enough live TV actually performing — and we’re not performing in this video, we’re not playing our instruments, we’re lip-synching — so because there’s no performance element, it doesn’t make me nervous,” Gibbard told MTV News on Monday. “Because really, all I have to do is remember the words that are being played over the P.A. and be standing in the right place at the right time. And there will be enough people kind of getting us to where we need to be that I’m not too nervous yet. But then again, it’s not for 24 hours, so I could maybe wake up tomorrow morning and be a little bit freaked out, but I think we’ll be OK.” Related Artists Death Cab For Cutie
