Total Solar Eclipse on Sunday – 07-11-10

PART ONE… http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-eclipse-20100710,0,127538.story?track… http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/img/total_lg.gif Total solar eclipse fans chase a moment in the sun They travel thousands of miles to catch the celestial intersection of sun and moon, which some describe as a spiritual high. On Sunday, it happens again. By Amina Khan, Los Angeles Times July 10, 2010 When the moon blots out the sun's blinding rays on Sunday, a sliver of the Earth's surface will be plunged into eerie darkness. Travelers who have crossed thousands of miles to witness the celestial show will gaze at the sky and, for a few minutes, see a thing most people never get to see: a halo of fire — the sun's corona — flickering around the edges of the silhouette of the moon. But Jay Pasachoff, over on Easter Island, may be looking down more than up — calibrating his instruments, checking for technical glitches, peering through lenses. He doesn't need to look up. He's seen 28 total eclipses, and 50 eclipses in all. Get important science news and discoveries delivered to your inbox with our Science & Environment newsletter. Sign up

‘Real World: Boston’ Alum Sean Duffy Running For Congress

Duffy, who is a district attorney in Wisconsin, is backed by former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. By Josh Wigler Sean Duffy Photo: MTV News Former “Real World: Boston” castmember Sean Duffy is looking to move from reality-television star to congressman. Duffy, a conservative district attorney, is considered a strong contender to win the Republican primary in Wisconsin’s Seventh Congressional District, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. The position is currently held by outgoing democrat David Obey. Duffy was thought of as a long shot to win, since Obey has maintained the position since his election in 1969, but the incumbent congressman announced his decision not to seek re-election in early May. Duffy’s campaign website includes the politician’s stance on key issues like the economy, health care, education, national defense and agriculture. He has received endorsements from notable GOP figures including onetime vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin and former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty. When Obey was still a candidate for Congress, Palin likened Duffy’s campaign as an example of the “many daring Davids [taking] on entrenched Goliaths” across the United States political landscape. “We’ve had 2,100 online contributions over the course of our campaign, which means we’ve had great support not just here in Wisconsin, but great national support,” Duffy said in a video message posted to his website June 21. The Times reports that Duffy has raised $600,000 during his campaign. Duffy has served as Ashland County’s district attorney since 2002. Outside of politics, he is best known as a veteran of MTV’s “The Real World: Boston.” His wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, is also a “Real World” alumnus; she appeared during the show’s San Francisco-set third season, and the two met during “Road Rules: All Stars” in 1998. Longevity Genes Predict Whether You’ll Live Past 100

“Using a specific set of genetic markers, scientists predicted with 77-percent accuracy whether someone would live to a very old age. The findings do not mean that lifestyle factors, such as healthy diet and exercise, are not important for long life. Indeed, 23 percent of the time the genetic markers didn't predict longevity. So those long-lifers without the centenarian genes might have practiced healthy habits that allowed them to lead a longer life. But they do suggest our genes play an important role when it comes to living well past the average lifespan. With more research, one day people might be able to determine whether they have the genetic potential to become a centenarian. Additionally, learning more about how centenarians ward off diseases, including dementia, heart disease and cancer, well into their elder years, might help the rest of us delay disease. “I'm very hopeful that understanding how and why centenarians are able to do that will lead to strategies and therapies, including screening and figuring out who could be helped by whatever therapies [there] are down the road,” study researcher Tom Perls, of Boston University School of Medicine, said in a press briefing Wednesday about the study. ” http://www.livescience.com/health/longevity-genes-centenarians-100701.html added by: DeliaTheArtist

All Time Low, Third Eye Blind Frontmen Bond At Bamboozle

‘I was nervous when you guys first joined on,’ ATL’s Alex Gaskarth tells Stephan Jenkins. ‘I’m a fan.’ By Joel Hanek All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth and Third Eye Blind’s Stephan Jenkins Photo: MTV News The eclectic traveling carnival that is the Bamboozle Roadshow came to an end over the weekend in Boston, but the “bro”-bonds that were formed on tour will go on. MTV News followed the action all week, catching up with all of the acts, from pop-punkers Boys Like Girls and Good Charlotte to electro-funksters LMFAO and 3OH!3. While the acts were diverse, one common theme among the musicians was their near-unanimous tendency to geek out over fellow headliners Third Eye Blind, with many calling the band one of the biggest influences on the current generation of rock groups. On the penultimate tour stop, at New York’s Nassau Coliseum, we caught up with All Time Low singer Alex Gaskarth and listened in on his talk with one of his musical idols, Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins. It turns out the two were not only fans of one another, but also formed a newfound friendship. “A couple days [into the tour], I saw you guys play, and you guys are like this ongoing sea of energy,” Jenkins told Gaskarth. “That, and you guys have the best banter, because what you do every night it’s so changed up … it’s really authentic.” Gaskarth repaid the compliment, recounting how nearly every night on the Bamboozle fest, everyone met up by the stage to catch a glimpse of Third Eye Blind’s set . On a few dates, Gaskarth was even lucky enough to join the band onstage for a performance of their mega-hit “Jumper.” “I think that was the craziest thing about when you guys actually did join on the tour — one of the big things was we’re a different generation of bands — a lot of us were nervous,” Gaskarth admitted. “I can say I was nervous when you guys first joined on,” he added. “I’m a fan. It’s always like kicking down that wall of ‘do I approach?’ ” With the Roadshow over, both bands are keeping busy. Third Eye Blind plan to record a new album, while All Time Low will be on the road through 2010. Did you catch the Bamboozle Roadshow this year? Who was your favorite act on the lineup? LeBron’s dramatic entrance stunned fans

LeBron Appreciation Day was held at InfoCision Stadium on Saturday, June 19, 2010. It was organized by the people in the City of Akron who thought that LeBron James isn’t just a basketball superstar, a two time MVP. For them, LeBron James is a true ambassador to their area, shining a spotlight on the greatness for their region and its people. He draws in crowds from all over the world, providing a boost to their economy and support for their businesses. The event, which is free and open to the public, is designed to show James how much he is appreciated by the city he grew up in and its citizens for everything he has done for Akron and Northeast Ohio. This festivity drew nearly 4,000 fans in the venue. As the thousands of fans already gone and leaving, LeBron James turned the big bash into a surprise party. He stunned everyone by walking through a side gate into nearly empty InfoCision Stadium in the University of Akron, after the event was officially ended. As his fans screamed and pushed to get closer to the two-time NBA MVP awardee, LeBron James, who lives a short drive near from the school, made his way down to the playing field. The MVP was presented with a gorgeous crystal trophy, which had to be pulled out of the box after being packed away. “Akron is my home, it’s my life,” James told the crowd after accepting the city’s first Hometown Hero Award. “Everything I do is for this city. I’m going to continue to do great things. I love every last one of you all. Akron is home.” James was then escorted through a door to the football team’s locker room and waved to fans before disappearing almost as quickly as he arrived. James didn’t commit to organizers that he would drop by to the said event, which was sponsored by local businesses and the city of Akron. He never mentioned about free agency during his 10-minute stay. This was his second public appearance since the post season ended in the second-round against the Eastern Conference Champions, Boston Celtics. Video and more info.. ‘Knight And Day’: Run Time, By Kurt Loder

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in an over-amped but underpowered spy tale. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in “Knight and Day” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox and Regency Enterprises Anyone who’s ever been trapped on a plane flight from Hell — squashed by sprawling seatmates, battered by passing backpacks, besieged by squalling brats — will appreciate the elegant simplicity of Tom Cruise’s solution to similar problems: He kills everybody. Literally. But then they were trying to kill him. Even the pilots. Which is why they’re dead, too. Emerging from the loo, Cameron Diaz is surprised to find that she and Tom are now alone, unless you count corpses as company. And she’s worried — the plane is diving fast. Tom will handle that. (“No need to panic.”) But then what? The answer to that question has been clear in every espionage-romance dating back at least to Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps.” The answer is: Run! If only “Knight and Day” gave these two much else to do. Playing rogue CIA agent Roy Miller, Cruise deploys his smooth charm to ravishing effect — we’re reminded again of what a supple comic actor he can be. And as innocent bystander June Havens, Diaz, with her eager eyes and engulfing grin, is adorable throughout. But the script, by first-time screenwriter Patrick O’Neill, doesn’t have enough of the breezy wit that makes a classic spy-chase movie like “North by Northwest” so pleasurable. There are some good lines. (Noting that trouble-magnet Roy has been wounded at one point, June deadpans, “You have to go to the hospital. Prison, maybe.”) But director James Mangold (“Walk the Line”) is mostly intent on goosing the action along from one nifty set of stunts to the next. The stunts are pretty great — especially a heavy-damage highway chase (which seems fresher than usual here) and a wild escape through a Spanish bull-run stampede. But we miss the stylish downtime that would allow us to catch our breath. And we miss the romance. Cruise and Diaz have real chemistry, but the script doesn’t enable them to do much with it. (Although there is a cute moment when she wakes up in a bikini she wasn’t wearing when she passed out. Too bad this sexy tease doesn’t build into anything interesting.) In the traditional way, the story is a flimsy thing; and in the traditional way, that doesn’t matter. Roy is being chased by a team of his former CIA colleagues led by an inscrutable character named Fitzgerald (Peter Sarsgaard). Fitzgerald is convinced that Roy has lost his mind and absconded with an ultra-powerful device called the Zephyr. (“The biggest thing since the sun,” Roy says.) The determined spooks chase Roy and June — who has fallen into this mess by sheerest accident — from Boston to the Azores (where Roy maintains a private island) to Austria (look out for the assassin!) to the Spanish villa where an international arms dealer named Antonio (Jordi Moll
