High School Student Posts Fake License To “Hunt Black People”

And in the realm of unexciting yet sad and must be reported news, a high school student from Pennsylvania’s Highlands School District posted a fake license to hunt and kill black people. The sickening license that began circulating via Snapchat detailed that the carrier is permitted to kill people during “open season” between January 1 to December 31st. Once officials got wind of the license and saw the picture, it was immediately sent to school officials, who also took immediate disciplinary actions to remove the student. [ madamenoire ] The Mall Of America Hires Its First Black Santa Claus Ever The Mall Of America is the country’s largest mall and they just made our holidays even merrier with recent news that’s been spreading like wildfire. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, for the first time in the mall’s 24-year history, a black Santa Claus will help children from all walks of life ring in the season. So, who is the man who took on the historical role? Larry Jefferson, a retired army veteran from Texas, was hired for the 2016 Christmas season. However, Jefferson isn’t new to the bright red suit and hat to match and black boots. He’s actually been dressing as Santa Claus since 1999 in an effort to help his family bring in the holiday and is the only black member of the Lone Star Santas, which celebrates diversity. To date, the group includes six Hispanic Santas and one Jewish Santa. [ madamenoire ] J. Cole and Wale Are Still Cool, Hang Out At College Basketball Game J. Cole and Wale are still very much cool. The two MCs were spotted hanging out at a college basketball game yesterday (Dec. 3). While Cole dropped “False Prophets,” taking Wale, amongst others, to task for not counting his blessings, the Washington, DC rapper responded with “Groundhog Day.” Don’t call the songs diss tracks—they’re clearly more like honest conversations, via bars. The two peers, who are surely still friends, were spotted at yesterday’s Boston University vs. North Carolina State basketball game at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC. Wale tweeted it, so you know that it’s real. Amazon Responds to Anti-Muslim Rhetoric With Perfect Holiday Commercial

When one thinks of efforts to bridge the gap between people of different faiths and help our nation heal during times of widening divisions, Amazon probably isn't the first organization to come to mind. Nevertheless, the online retail giant has debuted a new holiday commercial that seems to be a direct response to the growing problem of Islamophobia in the Western World. Set in England, the ad features an Episcopal priest and a Muslim cleric enjoying tea and griping about shared ailments. Eventually they part company and use Amazon's Prime service to send one another presents. Each of them gets a knee brace in the mail (presumably with free shipping) and reflects fondly on their friendship as he slips on. The message is clear: Whether you're a Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist or atheist – getting old sucks. We kid. As the priest and the cleric both kneel (now with less pain), it's clear that the ad intends to remind us that we're all more alike than we are different. Not to get all political in our description of a warm-and-fuzzy Amazon ad, but it's an important message during a time when the media has been forced to frequently use the phrase ” Muslin ban ” in its coverage of the guy who will soon be president. Interestingly, some advertising industry experts believe this to be the first commercial featuring a Muslim cleric ever to be broadcast on mainstream American television. “I can’t think of one. There are plenty of religious figures in televisions, especially sitcoms and police procedurals. But no ads with imams,” says Tobe Berkovitz, advertiser professor at Boston University. Toss out that giblet if the conversation gets too political during tomorrow's feast.

Jeremy Calvert Posts Photo of Daughter with MASSIVE Gun, Hears it From Critics

Teen Mom 2 fans are up in arms out after Jeremy Calvert posted a picture of his three-year-old daughter, Adalynn, with a rather large gun. Well, some fans are up in arms. Others are less irate. Or all for it! Jeremy’s weapon was not loaded at the time, it’s worth noting. The reality star used his Instagram caption to reassure naysayers of this fact and that his daughter with Leah Messer was not in danger. “She said, ‘Daddy, let’s go hunting and shoot a coyote…'” Jeremy wrote, clearly proud of his offspring (who looks just like him BTW). “Lol better watch out boys, she won’t miss.” A lot of people weren’t LOLing, but if you watch Teen Mom 2 online , or follow Jer on Insta, you know he’s not one to give many f–ks. In fact, he seemed to know the hate was imminent. “P.S. yes people it’s a gun and it’s also unloaded get over it…”  This is the Internet, of course. “eople never get over it. “This is deeply troubling,” one fan responded indignantly , right on cue and excoriating this move as the worst kind of parenting imaginable. “I can’t say I’ve ever commented on a celebrity’s post before but this really saddened me. When did childhood stop meaning innocence?” “Around guns there can be no innocence.” “I think it’s simply time to unfollow,” another comment reads, adding that it may seem innocent what he’s doing, but think of the little girl. “For a small child, this has such vast implications,” writes the fan, clearly of the mind that such upbringing may not be the best idea. “She can’t simply press the unfollow button.” Deep stuff right there, ladies and gentlemen. Another took the rebuke to the next level. “What the f–k Jeremy? I don’t give a s–t that it’s unloaded … treat it like it is loaded!” the fan wrote, urging him to rethink such behavior. “This is giving her the wrong impression of what a firearm is. It’s not a toy! Why don’t you try being a responsible parent for once.” “Giving gun owners a bad rep.” In fairness, other Instagram followers praised Jeremy for allowing little Addy to get “comfortable” with a gun, which is just a part of life. Gotta start ’em young … or not? Another defender of Calvert, who is now engaged to Brooke Wehr , said, “the thing is she won’t just go grab it because she thinks it’s okay.” “That is part of teaching our kids gun safety!” “My daughters know not to touch guns at all unless there is an adult to supervise. Whenever they see one they know to go tell an adult asap.” Maybe, this member of the pro-Calvert gun photo camp posits, it’s “because we teach our kids safety and not that they are evil machines.” The argument, questionable but not irrational, is that perhaps more exposure to guns would lead to fewer tragedies, this fan concluded. Others were more ambivalent about the whole thing. “We live in WV for God sake!! There is nothing wrong with this picture!! If he wants to take a picture with his daughter and his gun then let him” “I’m sure he wasn’t posting to get nasty reactions.” “It’s a cute picture! How is anyone to judge others!!?” Apparently this fan is new to the whole social media thing – especially when it comes to parenting – but the sentiment is nice, at least.  View Slideshow: Leah Messer Bad Parenting Excuse Hall of Fame One can only imagine how Leah Messer feels. Part of her may be alarmed at the sight, but then again, she is from West Virginia, and she’s been embroiled in her fair share of controversies. Some of them, admittedly, over absurd things. What do you think? Is Jeremy Calvert crossing a line with this photo of Addy and his gun? Or are people getting outraged over nothing? Hit the comments and let us know!

Heroic Father Enables Daughter to Trick or Treat on Board Airplane

Good news, readers: Not all flights conclude with a former reality star being taken away in handcuffs . Some, in fact, end with passengers reduced to tears as the result of an inspiring act by a fellow human being. This is one such story… An unnamed father on board a Virgin America flight from Boston to Los Angeles on Monday night didn’t want his three-year old daughter to miss out on Halloween. So he handed out candy to his fellow passengers and also gave them a note along with it. The note read as follows: My 3-year old daughter, Molly, was bummed that she wouldn’t be able to go trick-or-treating this year due to this flight… so I decided to bring trick-or-treating to her. If you are willing, when my little donut comes down the aisle, please drop this in her basket. You’ll be making her Halloween! If you’re unwilling, no worries, just pass the treat back to me. Thanks so much! Oh, yes, the little girl was dressed like a donut. Just in case you thought this tale couldn’t get any cuter. “OMG, my heart is exploding right now. Dad of the year just passed out candy to everyone on the flight so his 3 year old could trick or treat,” wrote a passenger who witnessed the act and then talked about it on Twitter. “He started handing out the treats… He handed them out mostly to folks in the aisle and middle seats,” this Twitter user, Stephanie, told BuzzFeed News . She added: “When I first got on the plane, I overheard the little girl talking about how she was excited to trick or treat. I felt sad because I was thinking about how when we landed in San Francisco it would be way too late to trick or treat.” Also making this story even better? The father did not want to be identified or quoted by Buzzfeed. He just wanted to make his little girl happy. That was it. View Slideshow: 18 Funniest Fathers on Twitter “The father said that he had this planned for a while with her as a special treat,” said Stephanie, who was sitting in front of the loved ones. “The few rows around me were really into it and thought it was absolutely adorable.” How could they not?!? Stephanie told the dad that she Tweeted about him during the flight and the story had bee re-Tweeted 5,000 times already. “I could tell he was pretty humbled hearing that what he did caused such a positive reaction,” she said. “He obviously wasn’t doing it for the reaction he just was genuinely doing it for his daughter.”

BOSSIP Exclusive: Banking And Buying Black, Why #BlackMoneyMatters

In the second part of our Black Lives Matter video series our panelists discuss the importance of buying and banking black.

BOSSIP Exclusive: Terri Williams President And COO Of One United Bank, Largest Black Owned Bank In The U.S. Answers Our Questions

Terri Williams Addresses Questions About Black Banks, One United In recent weeks we’ve seen tremendous growth in the number of new accounts being opened by black people at black owned banks. We reached out to Terri Williams, President and COO of One United Bank — the largest U.S. black owned bank to discuss what their institution offers account holders and to address fears people may still have about opening an account with a black owned bank . BOSSIP: Talk to us about the upsurge in business as of late? Are the reports being exaggerated or is this real growth you are seeing? Terri Williams: Website visits, branch visits, account generation have all increased tenfold. It’s really fabulous not just for us, but really part of a broader message and vision that we as a community are having a broader awareness of the importance of our dollars. BOSSIP: How does banking black help the community? TW: It’s not just banking black it’s actually buying black. It’s the broader point of buying black. I try to share with people that having dollars circulate through a community is how wealth is built… In any community, not just the black community. In our community, our dollars circulate for six hours on average before they leave. In the Asian American community, they circulate for 28 days. In the Jewish community, 19 days. Within six hours we’re spending our dollar in other communities and building the wealth of other communities. Whereas they’re visiting Asian restaurants, using Asian-American plumbers, etc… We’re the largest black owned bank, but the largest Asian American owned bank is worth something like 19 billion dollars. So other communities understand this much better than we do as a community. To some degree it’s understandable because we had to fight you know, going back to slavery and Jim Crow. I like to focus on the positive and look at how far we’ve come as opposed to looking at it as a negative. We have made a lot of strides from where we’ve come, but we still have a ways to go. And this particularly, the awareness of the importance of our dollars, is so critical to building wealth in our community. So it’s more than putting money in a black bank it’s also buying black. Circulating our dollars more in our community. What a bank does, and this is the other thing that people don’t understand is a bank actually recycles dollars. That’s what our role is. You put your deposit in the bank and those dollars are re-circulated throughout the community by who we hire and the lending that we do, and the investments that we make. So all we do is take the funds that are deposited and deploy them back into the community, that’s what banks do. It is more than banking black it really is buying black. BOSSIP: How have you worked to get that message out? We noticed you offer financial literacy classes. TW: We offer Financial literacy classes, but what I will say is that the message that I have just provided is more important to get that message out even more than financial literacy ,such as how to help yourself build your credit or how you can help prevent getting scammed. Those are more personal messages. But this call to action by Killer Mike , as well as others like Solange is really to me providing an opportunity for us to have a broader conversation about the fact that black money matters. And that it matters to us as a community and it’s just important to us again to not just bank black but buy black. BOSSIP: Are all of the One United Branches located in primarily black poor communities? TW: Yes. All of our branches except for one are located in black minority, low to moderate income communities. In Boston we are in Roxbury and Dorchester; in LA we are in South Central and Compton; in Miami we are in Liberty City. We employ people from the community and we are involved in a lot of community organizations in each of our markets. And we offer products and services that are affordable and that help the community in terms of, we didn’t do any sub-prime lending; we do first time homebuyers lending, we don’t charge outrageous overdraft fees. We are for responsible products and people can trust us. We could make more money if we were doing what the other banks were doing, but our role is not to make the most amount of money, it’s really to serve the community. BOSSIP: We noticed you guys offer secure credit cards as well. Are those rates reasonable? We’ve heard negative things about the rates for prepaid cards and Rush cards TW: The difference between a prepaid card like a Rush card and a secured card, is a secured card can actually help you rebuild your credit, because we report to the credit bureau unlike the Rush card. In addition we don’t charge all of those fees that prepaid cards charge. Our interest rate is a reasonable rate for someone who doesn’t have great credit – cause that’s why you’d get it, to improve your credit. And it’s a fixed rate. A lot of banks that offer these secured cards have a variable rate which can go up, but our rate is fixed. I think another thing that is important for our community is we need to start to trust each other. We are FDIC insured. People can put their money in the bank and not have to be concerned about it’s safety. We offer online banking and mobile banking. You can pay by text with us. You can take a picture of your check and deposit it. People think ‘oh the bank’s Black, I have to accept less services,’ when the reality is we actually have better services than most banks. So we as a community have gotten to a point where we actually do offer things that are better for our community than others, but we’ve come from a history of not trusting each other and we do have to get over that. BOSSIP: What is the fee to have a checking account with One United? TW: With a direct deposit it’s free. Same with savings. No limit on transactions per month. And like I said we have wonderful services. We have free online banking, we bill pay, we have great customer service. If customers are having an issue they can call us, send us a message. People have even sent us messages on Facebook and we’ve gotten right back to them. We also offer interest bearing checking accounts. Now the amount you have to deposit is higher, but we offer one of the highest interest rates on a checking account in the country. BOSSIP: When it comes to the other black owned banks is there any type of community organizing with each other? TW: Yes. The National Bankers Association is a trade organization that is really for minority banks, but it includes all of the black banks, and we meet regularly, at least once a year, but sometimes two or three times a year. So we all know each other. And we’ve all been doing this for many years. Most of the black banks were created during the civil rights era when other banks used to not work with us at all. This idea of banking black and garnering our spending power and channeling it back into our community is age old. You can go back to Marcus Garvey. Our civil rights leaders have been talking about this for decades. It’s just now we have the technology to actually do it. So now if you’re black in America but you live in a small town, you can still bank black. BOSSIP: What would you advise someone who doesn’t live in a city where there is a local black bank? TW: Go to OneUnited.com and open up an account to participate in this movement. It’s very simple. You can open up a savings account and deposit $100. And if we can get a million of us to do that, that’s $100 million dollars. So that’s a great way for people to participate. It’s easy to do. FDIC insured. And become a part of what I’m calling this Black Money Matters Movement. BOSSIP: Just one last question for people who still might be hesitant. The number of black banks has decreased from 48 to 21. Is it decreasing because they weren’t FDIC insured or the doors are actually closing because they don’t see the business? TW: No one has lost money by banking with a FDIC insured bank. There’s no way to lose your money by putting your money in a black bank. We are all FDIC insured. So that shouldn’t be a concern, that should really be off the table. Your money is safe. Banks in general have declined and consolidated. One United Bank is actually four banks that have been rolled up to be the largest black owned bank. So banks are consolidating. Some of them are closing but when they do, people don’t lose their money. What do you think about Ms. Williams’ answers? Have you started banking black yet? Do you plan to?
